I've put this into a mid-2009 MacBook (4GB ram) and it feels like a new machine again!

LITERALLY me! I can play my batman arkham knight (goty edition) at such greate framerate

      • +1

Why the negs? (there were two). How can you say for sure that it hasn't helped his frame-rate? E.g. speeding up section loading while on the move…

        • +3

          I didn't neg, but I'm guessing it's because Arkham Knight GotY edition doesn't exist…

    • +1

I originally posted this deal for 120GB which is not included in that deal. And then I added the 500GB because it has been reduced to $162 while it has been posted $164 but due to the AU$ getting down they ended the same cost after the exchange rate.

  • -1

    Shipping is not included.

    • its included!

      Samsung 850 EVO 120GB US $61.81/ AU $82.22 500GB US $167.73/AU $223 Delivered

      • I had my 500gb come to $331. Metro Victoria.

        • not sure what are you doing but look here

          http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/81226/31807/screenshot_…

did you changed the postage type?

        • @msmhw:

Maybe it's just my location. Used the default shipping method

@heinrich: I think because you are choosing amazon to charge you in AU$
Its better to let it charge in US$ if you have one of these credit cards that have good exchange rate and don't charge fees for overseas transaction. Like 28 degree

        • +1

@msmhw: 500gb is coming to $231 AUD to victoria!

  • +2

I gave it thumbs up for finding a product that Amazon actually ships to Australia!

(srlsy, though, thanks I got one of the 120gb ones. :)

  • $45 difference compared to MSY for the 500GB. Unless that doesn't account for shipping?

Consumer SSDs aren't designed for intensive 24/7 server use, that's what pricier enterprise Intel's are for.

    • +2

Perhaps a kingston using a sandforce controller?

In all seriousness, Samsung only comes second to intel in terms of consumer ssds

    • +1

Yeah, it might die once you hit ~900 Terabytes written: http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experim…

To put this into perspective, in 2.5 years I've written 24.56 TB to the SSD on my desktop that I use daily.

I think I can live with a ~90 year SSD lifespan.

  • Got one delivered to Sydney at approx $85 incl shipping.

  • Really? So an old HDD is all to blame for a laptop which used to operate faster under the same circumstances?

    • Ceterus parabus, the cluttered OS would be to blame.

    • Yeah it could be the case. I mean you are likely to see a boost in loading things faster if they ran off the SSD especially if Windows boots from it.

      • I have recently installed fresh windows 8.1 and I still have the same slow operation problem.

        2 questions

        • how to tell if the ssd will fit in my hdd slot?

        • do i necessarily have to install another fresh windows on ssd?

        • 1- you need to check if your laptop have SATA slot, similar to this http://techreport.com/r.x/mobile-hdds/plugs.jpg
most recent laptops using SATA but its better to check to make sure you are in the save said either by search in google for the model number of your laptop. Or open your laptop and check the HDD (usually easy to do)

2-yeah you have to install the windows in the SSD to notice the differences you can do that either with fresh installation or clone your HDD.

  • Frustratingly, I ordered the 500GB SSD from the Amazon deal posted the other day and it was a few dollars more than this, plus I also wanted the 250GB SSD. The deal now is perfect but it was too expensive at the time. Alas, I'll have to cough up for the extra shipping and place a second order.

Lesson: Snapping up bargains quickly doesn't always pay off…

    • +2

Actually amazon will refund you the differences if the price drops. You just need to contact them. Or even you can cancel the order/ return the order and they will pay for shipping it back.

      • +1

I've contacted them about the price drop of the 500GB drive, but it had already shipped, so ordering a second 500GB with the 250GB drive and returning the first order seems like more hassle than it's worth for the sake of combined shipping. At least I got the price difference back. :)

    • I've missed 3 killer deals in the last fortnight… that all started with hesitation.

I'll have to pay a lot more than your extra postage, or I'll never buy this stuff.

      . #Catch22

  • I bought a Acer ES1 411 C2TL (dual core version) in a recent deal.
Fixed on 250GB EVO 850. For the RAM part, which one of the below will suit best?

Not much price diff though… Worried on compatibility… can someone please help?

The 250GB one is only $4 cheaper than MSY…. I rather go purchase it at MSY.

  • Being cheapest on CamelCamelCamel is interesting, but compared to local shops is my main interest.

For those curious… Cheapest in Aus.
    120GB $104 @ MSY
    250GB $150 @ MSY
    500GB $255 @ MSY

  • is it worth getting the 250GB? right now using the amazon converter it's saying it costs $143 AUD. however, if i change it to 'order in USD' is there any way i can find out how much my master card bank will charge? MSY has it at $155.

    • 28 degrees Mastercard use exchange rates that are fairly close to XE exchange rates.

      Right now 1.00 AUD = 0.751750 USD

      • +1

i don't have the 28 degrees master card. using its exchange rate would take it to roughly $138, only $5 different. it would be $143 for me, would rather buy in person i suppose?

        • Better to buy locally in person then. Aussie ones have gone down to $148 delivered.

        • +1

@Fobsessive: decided to go with the 500gb instead. turns out to be around $235 AUD

    • Depends on who you're card is with. Many card/products charge fees, apart from the conversion rate.
There's a handful of cards with 'pure' conversion. Most only know 28deg.

      • ah i see. i just have a normal commbank master card

  • Does anyone know if you buy a Amazon.com gift card it can be used on Amazon.com and then shipped to an AU address? Your feedback will be appreciated as I know where I can get a slightly discounted one.

    • yes you can do that.

is it the offer buy +$50 gift card and get free $10 ?

      • Where is that! I was just planning on using a site like giftcardgranny.

Note that as per the warranty terms and conditions, Samsung Australia won't cover SSDs bought outside of Australia.
Amazon only has a 30 day warranty period which sucks

    • All HDD Vendors have international warranties

      • Not Samsung Australia for sure http://www.samsung.com/au/support/html/warrantyinformation/w…
        B. For the purpose of this Warranty, a "Samsung product" is a product which:

was manufactured by or on behalf of Samsung; and
bears a trade mark owned or used by Samsung (generally "SAMSUNG"); and
was sold by an Authorised Reseller or Distributor of Samsung; and
        was purchased in Australia

        • can anyone confirm this? e.g. if there were any manufacturing defects, what the procedure would be?

        • @djdavy69: From the negative Amazon reviews, it seems Amazon does not take any responsibility after their 30 day returns period. I paid a few bucks more for Aussie stock with five years warranty (definitely) and never looked back.

        • @Fobsessive: I contacted Amazon live chat about this after ordering mine and got this response:

As I have checked the reason why the item is not cover by a warranty is because the warranty only covers inside US. There is nothing to worry about, since this item directly sold by Amazon, if happens that you encountered any issues with the product and the 30 days return policy elapsed, we at Amazon can give an exception, and you can still return the item for a full refund.

        • @MountainGoat: I wonder how well they uphold those exceptions

If you're a gamer, you have to get 500GB. Big games these days take 50GB+. You'll fill up your 120 and even 250GBs quick.

    • That's true. I need to use the SteamMover program to shuttle games between my SSD and Mechanical HDD, depending on what I am currently playing.

SteamMover uses junction points and is available here: http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover

An alternative is GameSave manager. It was designed to backup your savegames but also has a Steam Spreader feature. http://www.gamesave-manager.com/

      • You don't need 3rd-party programs to have SteamApps folders on two separate drives.

        1. Create a new Steam games directory on a drive different to where Steam's installed. (Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders > Add Library Folder)
        2. Copy the either the SteamApps folder (if you're migrating your entire library to a new drive) or specific game folders within SteamApps (if you're moving games off the SSD); to a neutral location.
        3. Uninstall the game(s) you want to move.
        4. Copy the game folder to its new location (i.e. the new directory you created).
        5. Reopen Steam.
        6. Reinstall the game, making sure to choose the new location for the install.
        7. Steam should say it's discovering pre-existing content.
        8. The game will now run from it's new location.

Vice-versa, moving games back to the original drive follows the same procedure.

    • I am a gamer and 500 GB is too small for me. XD
I won't be getting anything less than 1TB now.

      • +1

Depends how many games you play at a time, and what type. I play mainly single player games, so I beat one game at a time and remove as necessary. For me 500GB is plenty, but I can't vouch for everyone.

The chore is backing up your save files. There's no standardized place where save games get placed. Every developer does it differently. Unless it supports Steam Cloud. Even with Steam sans Cloud, finding where it's saved is a pain and always requires googling for me.

  • All prices in USD for every version*

  • im scared about the warranty :(
is the 40$ saving worth loss of warranty after 30days ?

  • Gone up to $67.
    Expired.

  • Managed to get 14 dollars refunded today when the 500 gb went to 150 . cheers msmhw

  • Merged from [Amazon] Samsung 850 EVO 500GB $169.74USD/ $238.83AUD Delivered

Hey guys, just noticed this dropped in price so I pulled the trigger finally. Will go well with my 16GB of RAM from a previous deal.

    • +1

Pity the USD has tanked. Dang!

      • +1

I'm guessing you meant AUD? If the USD went down we'd get it cheaper.

        • Technically the $AU hasnt tanked as much as the US has recovered. Historically the $AU is around US$0.72 or thereabouts. As far back as I can remember it ranged from $0.50 (+ or - a bit) in bad times, to US$0.80 (+ or - a bit) in good times, parity was unheard of, unthinkable, when we surpassed it that was extraordinary.

To me its just returned to a time when the US economy wasnt in the gutter. The high AU$ was a boom time for us though.

      • +1

Really? It is coming up as $175USD Delivered for me.

        • Showed up as AU$237.8- for me
