Free Skyteam Elite Status Match (for Qantas/Virgin Silver Members)

190

Spotted this on the AusBT website, so full credit to the guys over there.

Seems like a good deal for anyone with a Silver membership (or above) in a non-Skyteam Alliance, including Qantas and Virgin Australia for locals, and American Airlines, Emirates, Singapore and United for those with overseas memberships.

EDIT: This status match is available until 31 December 2015. This means that if you're going to gain a higher level of status later in the year you'll be okay to wait a little longer before applying.

Here's what you get from the status match:

Any Silver-level frequent flyer card from a non-SkyTeam airline gets you Ulisse Club membership in Alitalia MilleMiglia, along with SkyTeam Elite status.

The first rung above entry-level members in both schemes, Alitalia throws in two free business class upgrades on its own flights, along with 25% more points when flying with SkyTeam.

Your SkyTeam Elite status also gives access to the priority queues at check-in and boarding with every SkyTeam airline, an extra 10kg of baggage or one extra piece and more, although not free lounge access.

Gold- and Platinum-grade cards, however, match to Freccia Alata Club and Freccia Alata Plus Club with MilleMiglia and the SkyTeam Elite Plus tier.

That unlocks business class lounge access before any SkyTeam international flight – although not before domestic flights – plus access to all Sky Priority queues, priority baggage handling and the ability to secure an economy seat on already-full SkyTeam flights when booking at least 24 hours before departure.

Here's what you need to do:

  • Join Alitalia MilleMiglia for free, then take note of your 'MilleMiglia code' (i.e. membership number).
  • Email [email protected] with your first and last name, your MilleMiglia code and photo/scan of your current Silver, Gold or Platinum frequent flyer card of any non-SkyTeam airline.

AusBT also points out an extra little benefit with this status match:

Handy tip: If your current frequent flyer card expires on or before March 31 2016, that's the date when your Alitalia card will expire. But, if your current card expires after March 31 2016, your Alitalia (and SkyTeam) status will be valid through the end of March 2017.

  • I did this last week, still waiting for it to come through

I only just spotted it this morning so haven't had the chance to send off the application yet. Let us know if it comes through - that way we can ensure it's a legit 'bargain' and not some misleading marketing campaign on Alitalia's part!

    • Same here. Applied last week, I was going to post once confirmed but I still haven't heard or anything from them.

  • +1

I will, one thing to note is never use Alitalia to collect miles, they have changed their programme every couple of years recently fully discarding the old program and not letting miles transfer over, however the input from Etihad might stabilise it more this this time

This status match is also on until December 31st 2015 so if you are not going to gain status until later in the year then its still ok to wait.

    • Just added that to the post, cheers!

  • just checked mine, sent the email on the 1st July, still no change yet, but i'm guessing they have had a huge amount of applications to its going to take a bit of time to go through them

Will hit Virgin Gold with my next flight… this will come in handy. Thanks!

This could potentially then be used to status match with Turkish Airlines… and gain Gold for Star Alliance:

    • "However, frequent flyer cards from airlines which don't belong to any of those alliances aren't accepted – which rules out the likes of Virgin Australia, Etihad, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic"

      Article says it right there…

      • -1

Huh? You use this Skyteam membership to status match, not the virgin…

        • -3

You can NOT use Virgin Gold to status match is what I'm saying…

  • "That unlocks business class lounge access before any SkyTeam international flight " meaning you still have to fly a SkyTeam flight eh…

    • Well yes, they're giving out status matches as an incentive to use SkyTeam services. It's good if you're planning on flying to Bali via Garuda though, since they're a member of the Alliance and you'd then get access to their lounges in Aus/Indo.

oh yeh, not having a whinge, it's fair enough. but I think from memory other alliance memberships allow access regardless of your boarding pass.

edit: actually I think im wrong lol

  • Any way to get from a silver to gold status in any airlines? besides lots of flights?

    • -1

no. unless there's a special promotion. but ive never seen any.

    • Most of the airlines (as well as many hotels) in the US offer an unpublished challenge or fast-track. It might be look something like XX qualifying miles in the next 90 days = gold status.

It has been done in the past here as recently as last year but I don't believe any are active at the moment.

  • anyone able to successfully attain this?

    • Nothing yet :/

      • awesome, thanks for the update!
