AC5300 replacing AC3200 is coming soon

    • +5

However at around $200, it is really a bargain no matter if it is to be replaced or not.

      • +1

Agreed. Even (900mhz)802.11ah is coming out but for 200 bucks, this is one of the best router.

  • I am getting NBN soon, can I connect this thing direct to the NBN box? Would I need to buy anything else?

Next cheapest on staticiceis $255. http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=NetGear+R80…

    • Hi,

Yes you can. I'm using this same router for NBN connection in North Melbourne.

      • Thanks, does it work well? If Officeworks send out those 5tb hard drives I hope I can plug it direct into this thing.

I have ordered. Price including shipping to WA and paypal surcharge is $241.40.

        Do Umart ship quickly?

        • +1

I have a 4TB seagate plugged into mine and it is viewable on my PC as a network drive, but using their software to share it as a media centre over wifi is very buggy.
Only shows some of the content.

Had it for about 3 weeks now and that's my only problem with it

      • +1

How are you getting NBN in NM? I thought it has not rolled out in there yet.

      • Is it as simple as plugging into the NBN modem and entering ISP login details? We're with TPG and I assumed that we would have to use the router that came with them and turn off NAT and plug in with a new router, but obviously that's one extra step I would prefer to avoid if it's possible.

Looks like you could launch a nuke off the back of that thing…

    • +5

You need separate codes to launch missiles.

Love this router, very reliable connection on multiple devices even through walls/upstairs/basement Bought this at $350, $200 is good price

    Mortein really does work!

  • Great router - all those repeaters can go!

  • +1

If I only have one client on the 802.11ac will this run faster than 200meg netgear ethernet over power?

    • Depends on the distance between your device and the router. There are many ac router reviews with speed benchmarks in distance available.

    • Depends on the distance, but probably.

I typically saw about 30mbit real world through '200mbit' EoP. Even my 3x3 'n' laptop gets over 100mbit a few rooms away off my AC1900 router.

Note that AC3200 isn't any better for single client than AC1750 or AC1900 - It just gives you a second 5ghz radio to help spread out your clients.

      • Thanks, I only have a 2x1 house. Its pretty small.

What I am thinking of doing is using one EoP device to locate the Nighthawk in the middle of my house (laundry). Then connect the desktop direct to the Nighthawk via the fastest pci express wifi card I can buy (any recommendations?).

The other high bandwidth devices (roku in bedroom and HTPC in living room) continue to connect via EoP.

        Does this make sense?

  • Anyone know how good this is with 2 story double brick homes? I'm currently running 4 access points all up and it's a bit ridiculous.

    • you prob want a R7000 - much better range

  • +1

It is worth noting this model is affected by the netUSB flaw discovered earlier this year, if you are concerned about that sort of thing.

    https://www.sec-consult.com/fxdata/seccons/prod/temedia/advi…

There seems to be no remedy. either.

Sometimes NetUSB can be disabled via the web interface, but at least on NETGEAR
devices this does not mitigate the vulnerability. NETGEAR told us, that there is
no workaround available, the TCP port can't be firewalled nor is there a way to
disable the service on their devices.

How is this any better than an average Billion Modem?

    • This isnt a modem.. I suggest you try reading..

    • +1

      http://whatismyipaddress.com/router-modem

I didn't know there was a difference either.

    • +11

That's ok fruit I can understand the confusion. A modem does the talking between your house and the service provider - TPG/Telstra etc. It shakes hands and speaks Hebrew and says hi and bye.

The router takes what the modem does and splits it up into multiple connections in your house. It 'routs' your youtube request from your phone, into the modem, and then the modem takes it to infinity and beyond.

Sometimes the modem and router is integrated, but in this case it's just the router part.

  • Yes it is cheap but the question is how stable is this router? I have the R7000 and sold it because I could not get it to run smoothly especially while dealing with QOS on its factory firmware and ddwrt. I have replaced it with the Asus and have not needing to reboot it since day one.

    • Hi Donkeykong, what Asus router are you using now ? I have the same problem with R7000, tried tomato shibby ,toastman & Asuswrt-Merlin but QOS package priority seem doesn't work properly.

      • +1

I'm guessing ASUS RT-AC68U, gets solid reviews everywhere. I am tossing up between this and R8000 also…..

        • +1

Yes, RT-AC68U. I love it and saved my blood pressure and headache.

        • +1

one thing about ASUS RT-AC68U that i don't like is the CPU running quite hot, like 80C.

    • I'm running dd-wrt on r7000, it's quite stable, though I do not use QoS.
However, I think there's no good build for r8000, and stock fw is somewhat problematic.

    • I've been running a r7000 for a year now on the NBN & its been rock solid, cant think of a time its required a reboot. However the Asus are regarding as the dogs bollocks.

  • damn, just bought a r7000 on the weekend for $180….

    • you made the better choice - R7000 has better range , and alot more better custom firmware

  • +1

Was going to purchase the Asus RT-AC68U tomorrow, but saw this. Should I get this or stick with the Asus? Both are exactly the same price (after R8000 OW price beat).

    • +1

Stick with the Asus for headache free and I am sure you will not need all the unstable features of the R8000.

    • Hardware wise this is better, its more comparable to ac87u. The interface is better on the ASUS. Overall at this price you cant go wrong.

    • Bought the ac68u today. First modem/router I've bought in yearrrs. At $209 it was suggested as best buy. I actually went in to buy an archer c9 for $30 cheaper… but panicked with the MSY Soup Nazi pressure to perform :D

      $258++ normal streetprice is mental.

At $220, this could be king!! Doh!!

  • I just realized NBN is available at my house and have paid for it, selecting my own router.

I currently have a Netgear DGN2200v3 which I believe is not compatible with the NBN.

Is purchasing this while it is this cheap be a good idea?

    Thanks.

  • Is there a modem-inclusive equivalent?

  • What's the advantage in this over a router with just one band/antenna?

    • +2

The advantage is that this one has 5 more antennas and it looks cool!!! :)

  • Went to North Sydney Office work , Was told not able to Match price, what Can I do, Does Office work has price match policy ?

    • I was able to price match for $209 at Officeworks Alexandria. What reason did they give for refusing to match the price?

      • Warranty , but I can not see diffident in warranty , Netgear do not have factory in Australia right ?

        • Yeah, I don't think they have a factory. You can refer them to the bottom part of the Umart page which indicates, in addition to the store warranty:

This product is backed by a NETGEAR limited 1-year Hardware Warranty.
24/7 basic technical support provided for 90 days from purchase date, when purchased from a NETGEAR authorized reseller

I understand that this may also be expanded by mandatory warranty periods required under AU law.

        • @DigitalAnalog:

Means officework should Price match ?

        • +2

At least they did so in my case. In any event, you can always buy from Umart, which was kinda the whole point of my deal submission anyway. :)

        • I'm pretty sure Officeworks' price match policy is on Australian stock (so not grey imports). Australian stock is covered under ACL so you get additional benefits. This is why you generally pay more for Australian goods, at least that's what they want us to believe.

  • Is there a way you can hook this up with cable?

    • +5

you'd just plug an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the "internet" port on the R8000 (the yellow port).

    • Also best to disable the router of your cable modem.

      • I'm not too tech savy. How would I find out how to do this to my modem?

        • +1

This guide is a good start.

  • Got a price match at officeworks Keysborough, VIC. Last one on the shelf. Cheers OP

  • +1

As I'm in SA, I opted to do the price match with Office Works over the phone. For me, they had to include Umart's delivery price before discounting. I ended up paying OW $222.30 for in store pickup.
    Thanks OP :-)

  • I'm sure it's a good router but god this thing is ugly. It looks like a giant bug that's been killed and rolled over. Disappointing by Netgear standards.

    • Most, including me, thinks this mofo looks damn wicked.

      • It's true. After deploying, we may even get friend requests from Jong-un or Putin!

        • or get called in to explain why you shot down MH17

    • Most expensive in its class, yet highly regarded & sells like hotcakes. This is $220.

You cant see a +Vote in that?

  • Back up to $250?

    • looks like it :(

  • I bought this router last time Dick Smith had it on special. Has been working flawlessly. Excellent speed and wireless range on my NBN connection.

    • Have you use it higher function like Guest wireless, Set when wireless on and off for kids to access in 2.4 Ghz band and 5 Ghz wireless for yourself with no restriction, QOS, USB share etc? If you start to play with these complex setting you probably going to experience glitches. If not, why bother paid for these features and not using it?

      • Hey donkey, so can you suggest a router function that has good range/speed/reliability, minus USB share and all these complex settings?
Just need a powerful and reliable wireless router that is fast, don't need all these other extra features.

      • I do use the QOS feature and it comes in handy especially when I have my torrent box running.

Only reason I bought it was because it was Netgear's latest model and a poster posted the bargain here.

  • Anyone ordered from umart online before?

Are they quick to send stuff out?

    Thanks

    • Just called.

The said it should ship today or tomorrow from Sydney.

No problems with stock by the sounds of it.

My poor 802.11n router has to hang in there for another few days.

  • Does this work as a modem too? I'm getting TPG ADSL2+, can this be used as a modem/router or is it just a router and I'll need a seperate modem?
