Qantas Frequent Flyer - Save on Emirates Coded Award Flights

130

Using the Qantas app on Android or iPhone, you can save a lot of money on Emirates award redemptions using Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Normally, an award seat from Perth to Dubai in Business Class is 72,000 points plus around $395 in "taxes". When you book via the app, it's only 72,000 points plus the real amount of around $80 in taxes. This is probably a glitch and will probably be fixed soon so book fast. I tested SYD-DXB and it works as well, so most likely works for all Emirates routes. The flight MUST be Emirates coded and of course there has to be availability. I didn't test this for economy but it probably will work so this makes economy redemptions more valuable.

  • Could it be Emirates has silently dropped some surcharges? Or Qantas wants to empty up peeps' points, their awards are already overpriced.

  • Interestingly searching by the App for me doesn't reveal any Emirates operated Qantas codeshare flights but I see them on the desktop. The App only gives me Qantas operated flights. I wonder if I haven't enabled something within the App.

  • i had the same issue, searching for flight from melb to paris for January, websites shows heaps of classic award seat, but almost nothing on the iOS App

Another tip is to use QFF points on Cathay award redemptions. Cathay charge very small taxes and IMO have a great business product - ADL - HKG is only $120 taxes one way in business (plus 65,000 points).

    • same here, booked SYD-HKG business class on CX (codeshare) around Chinese New Year 2016 using QFF, 65k points plus about $110 tax. It is $4001 on CX website and for the same flight economy ticket is about $600.

      • how do you book with cx? is it just an option when you search flights? Can't recall seeing them.

        • Yes normal option on qantas site. Just tried and it really looks amazingly cheap. Thanks for the tip Adelee!

login Qantas and tick the box "Search only for Classic Reward" under search flight, its information button reads "availability on Qantas, Jetstar, and a wider range of Emirates, oneworld® alliance airlines and selected Qantas Frequent Flyer airline partners and affiliates. Restrictions may apply." and I even requested a window seat and got it few days later.

My experience today has left me wondering. I have booked a package to a river cruise with air fares included at no extra cost. The package providers have air travel arrangements with both Emirates and Singapore Airlines. Strangely no affiliation with Qantas. As a holder of a significant number of Qantas frequent flyer points, and knowing that there is allegedly a strong and growing relationship between Qantas and Emirates, I contacted Qantas frequent flyers and asked how I might use some of my points to travel using the Emirates flight to upgrade from economy to business. The Qantas person with whom I spoke, conferred with her supervisor and advised there were no issues. Our travel agent only had to arrange things via the Industry Support Team. However we found this was not the case and we have now been told we cant use our points to upgrade. Our tickets do not have a QF designation. I might add that the flight is code shared between Emirates and Quantas, so it is the same aircraft.
Can anyone suggest how we can get around this issue and be able to use our points?
