Thanks TRENT, scored the SEAGATE Backup Pls 2TB Desktop Hard Drive for $66.35 using the mates rate voucher

    • Is that an actual voucher or do you just mention you got an email that said 10% off for mates rates? When does it expire?

      • +1

It comes in my email. It's $10 off a $50 spend which can be used in store or online. They just seem to pop up from time to time, but this is the first time I have ever used it.

        • is there a code for it?

        • My email says its instore only?.. how do you use it online?

        • What date did you get it? I wanna check my email. I can see an old one but nothing recent.

        • @daveaus: 23/7/15. This is not the first one I have received, but it's the first one I have used.

The email is titled: "Welcome to Mates Rates"

It says it can be used in store by showing the email or there is a unique code to use on the website.

@unity1: Thanks, I found one from May. It said the coupon expires in June but it worked! Got the 3tb for $97.

        • +1

@daveaus: Thanks. I'll trying using the codes from the past emails.

      • If anyone has a $10 Dick Smith voucher they don't want to use - I'd happily use it :) I signed up, but don't think the e-mail will come in time for today's promotion.

    • +1

      Thanks.. just used mine too.

    • I just tried to purchase and it is $119 for the 2TB one? Not sure what is going on here but it definitely is not $76.35

I would probably never buy a Seagate drive again. The 3 i've had die after about a year, WD all the way.

    • I'm on my second 2T Backup Plus from Dick. The first was DoA with a dead power supply the replacement gave a wierd error when I tried to use it for a Win 7 image backup.

I'm old enough to remember when Seagate was the most reliable drives.

    • The Seagate Backup Plus Portable contains a Samsung drive.

  • Is the 3TB seagate expansion compatible with the Xbox One?

    • as in, just plugged in via USB? yes

    • Yeah just double check on google what format it has to be and just reformat the drive.

      • If the intention is to use the drive for games, you let the Xbox One format it. Otherwise for media NTFS, FAT32 & FAT should be fine.

        • Oh it does it by itself? Wow I haven't personally tried it with the Xbox one. Was a massive pain when trying to do it on the Xbox 360 as it had a limit on what size the USB was.

        • @spendrick:

Xbox 360 now supports external HDDs as well. Only limitation with the Xbox One is the device size minimum is 256GB

        • @sallan75:
Hi Sallan75, do you know if xbox 360 will need a external powered HDD or usb powered will work?

Without getting into a Seagate vs WD battle. FWIW a large number of the 3TB seagate drives have failure rates much higher than the equivalent in WD, or indeed higher than the MTBF of drives generally.

I'd hate to see you lose saves or whatever.

For the record, i have a large mix from both manufacturers, i just dont touch Seagate 3TB's.

        • I'd hate to see people get burned. Even if you back up your back up, its just such a pita trying to restore everything when a drive of this capacity fails.

          Your graph is quite telling.

      • I believe saves are stored online on the One. But yeah I'd be wary of the bigger Seagate drives for anything valuable.

  • Any of these good for PS4 guys?

Don't forget Free, 2-year Access to 200 GB storage on OneDrive® with Seagate backup hard drive registration. Seagate website link

  • OFFICEWORKS was $149 for 5TB

which was a pricing error and not honoured, I believe.

      • +3

        They were honoured.

I had 4 delivered last week.

      • +1

I got one of those too. Disappointed I didn't order more…

      • They cancelled mine :(

    • Yeah I posted that deal :)

      • +1

… and an awesome deal it was :)

I only wish I bought more.

    • I ordered 2. Picked up one but the second item disappeared in their store and I am still waiting for a re-order. Fingered crossed.

  • A question or two, guys; I note that these USB drives are consistently cheaper than internal drives. So, are they of a lesser quality (I have three x 3T dead Seagate external USB drives, all failed within 18 months)?

In the good old days we were able to rip the drives out of their cases and use them in our PCs. Is that still an option?

    • That is still an option.

    • I do not believe they are of a lesser quality or treated any differently at manufacture. Depending on the rpoduct, it can be a lucky dip what drives are in the package, but i've pulled 7k RPM barracudda's from 2 seagate externals in the last few months.

the hardware and controller attached to the HDD can fail in these externals also, which adds another link in the chain and maybe increase perceived failure rates.

also perhaps treatment of the externals is often rough as they are moved about.

      • Thanks for the feed back

I did remove the three drives I mentioned from their cases and plugged them into a dock for testing. None fired up, so they were dead. I had imported them from overseas so decided to forgo the hassle of warranty returns.

I thought I might buy three or four of the USB drives to restock an older Netgear ReadyNAS device I use for backups.

        Cheers

To anyone reading stop buying Seagate - I thought I was the only one.
I have family photos stored on it that I cant open anymore. Stupid Seagate!

      • +1

Just grab them off the backup that you would surely have for family photos.

I hate to weigh into these things but every Seagate I have owned has failed, the 2 WD drives I own are still going strong.
One is a little 500 gig portable that is slung around in my bag everyday, plugged and unplugged all the time and has never missed a beat.
I am usually price, price, price but I would not choose Seagate again and would only use a free one as a backup, never primary.

    • +1

I have RMA'd at least 6 Seagate drives and only one WD (because it was dropped)

      • burn em all

  • Is anyone else having trouble checking out? I'm trying to click and collect, pay with Paypal, but when i get to the last screen I tick the box to agree to the terms and conditions and the 'place order' button remains greyed out.

    • I had that issue also. Pressing the Update Details (or similar) button beside it then reloaded the page with the place order button available.

  • The 8tb Seagate is pretty good value atm - normally its about 600
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/usb-hard-drives/backup-plus-desk…

    • the actual HDD is everyday price of 329 from a bunch of retailers, so any pricing on the enclosure version is a massive markup.

  • what actual HDD is inside the STDT2000300 2tb seagate backup plus mentioned here is it a 5400 or 7200 also can I just take it out of the enclosure easily ? Can't find the info on this anywhere online.
