      Obviously an Apple TV v3. Version 2 doesn't have 1080p HD (only supports 720p video).

      only on Atv1( stock can only handle SD and some 720p flick on certain codecs).
      However you get the Broadcom HD chipset and it play full HD but you will lose wifi capabilities(only 1 slot).

      Has Ethernet though or you could get funky with a wifi USB stick.

      Atv 2 stock will only do 720p if I'm not mistaken.

      other options:
      Raspberry Pi (any model) but go for the version 2.

      pretty much any android/ Linux device.

    If you buy an Apple TV buy it for what it is, an apple product. If you want to run Kodi (xbmc), buy a device that runs Kodi.

    An Apple TV is a device for purchasing music, movies and TV show content, with the ability to play it on a connected HDMI device (TV, monitor). If you want to run your own media, I would recommend using another device to do so.

    I don't understand why people would buy a device just to 'hack' the software that is already on it. You can purchase plenty of Android devices under $60 instead, and android runs Kodi without the need to crack or hack the software.

      You can have your own content from other sources in iTunes and play that on the ATV as well.

        It also lets you 'mirror' you ipad, iphone and mac screens to the TV which can be quite useful. You can use it for Netflix, and if you sign up through the aTV you can pay for your Netflix through your apple account (ie pay for it with discounted itunes credit.)

        I have both.
        Chromecast really is a poor cousin when compared to the Apple TV.
        I could support WD TV or Roku, but seriously Chromecast does not even compare to Apple TV.

    i haven't tried jailbreaking the apple tv, but this is a pretty good deal.

    if you want to use your own media, then you need to have it in iTunes, and if it isn't tagged properly it can get very messy very easily.

    there are also apps installed on it for netflix, stan, and a bunch of other things too.

    I use it mainly for netflix and music in my iTunes library through my tv/soundbar.

      You won't jailbreak this one as it's an Apple TV v3 which can't be cracked.

      Amazing price for a brand new Apple TV though.

      I run all of my media via wireless from a NAS on iPads using the Infuse app (paid version - but still very cheap). I finally got an Apple TV with this deal and very happy with how it mirrors content to the 46" tv. I am also yet to find any content type that Infuse can't play, which means I do not have to worry about putting media into iTunes ever.

      I also got a chromecast about 6 months ago - and have to admit I don't use it at all anymore. For what I needed it is not near as capable as the Apple TV.

      Apple TV will only play video streamed through iTunes or Apple devices. Locked to Apple. Won't play Ultraviolet.

      If you want to stream video from Ultraviolet the Chromecast would be the way to go.

      How do I leave Club Catch?
      Leaving club catch is very simple, just navigate to your "Account" and open the "Club Catch" tab and select "Cancel Subscription". This function is available on web and mobile.

      How does the free trial work?
      The free trial gives you 30 days of free access to all club benefits. After the free trial, you will be automatically billed for your membership and receive 12 months of membership access.

      But then found:

      Free Trial subscription
      If you sign up to a 30-day free trial subscription, you will receive Club Catch subscriber benefits for free for 30 days from the date of purchase in accordance with these terms and conditions. During this time, you may cancel your trial subscription at any time by making a request via our Help Desk.
      If you do not cancel your trial subscription, after the 30-day trial period we will charge your credit card the subscription fee and you will become a full Subscriber of Club Catch. You have a further 30 days after this time to cancel your subscription for a full refund, otherwise it will remain valid for the remaining subscription period.

      Seems you need to contact their helpdesk to cancel during the free trial period

      Just need to uncheck the "Renew my subscription before it expires" box in your club catch settings. The free trial will end after 30 days and you will not be charged. Confirmed with an agent on the live chat - there's nothing else to do from their end.

    You don't need to jailbreak this to play your own media on it.

    Using PlexConnect and Plex Media Server, you can play your own content on an AppleTV 3. I have it running off my HP Microserver running FreeNAS 9.

      PlexConnect is a cool hack, but not a lot of point when you can get a $40 Android-TV device running actual Plex and/or Kodi. (I use the Pi2)

      Its not like the old days when Apple-TV was an exceptionally cheap way to run an HTPC.
      It still makes a great netflix platform though.

      There must be plenty of ways to play your own content with jailbreaking (including the ones listed here). See my post above - using Infuse app to play all media types via wifi. Cheap and quick solutions are plentiful.

      if you have the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 iOS 5 or later then you possess the correct Apple branded equipment to allow the mirror Apple TV feature.

      Assuming you have one of these, or later model idevices, then you can mirror whatever is on the device to the Apple TV (unless you have the very first gen Apple TV).
