Competitions Discussion

Ok, let's have a general place to discuss anything and everything on the Competition side of this page. Sure, each comp has it's own comment section, but this is for getting more general. So, we'll try to have shopping lists for those Purchase comps, and whatever else needs/wants to be brought up/highlighted :)

Does anyone have any tips on how to best organise your e-mail inbox? What I do at the moment is keep a big ongoing list in a Word document. When I enter a new competition (and have to subscribe to a newsletter), I note down the name of the company, and the draw date. Then after the draw date has passed, I unsubscribe from the newsletter. I do this cos I'm afraid that if I unsubscribed straight away after entering a comp, it might void my chance of winning, i.e. If they picked me as the winner on the draw date, they'd check that I was still subscribed, and if I wasn't, they wouldn't give me the prize.

    Hi all,

I won this comp last year before I was on OB - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/303607 Unfortunately Nitro Circus cancelled their NZ tour so we got the choice to travel to one of their Australian shows. The promoter has gone out of their way to make it an awesome trip and I'm excited to fly out to Canberra with my wife to watch the show.

Also last year the wife won this holiday - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/289723 We chose the I love Beach package which was a Airlie Beach holiday (the holiday was in the form of vouchers so we managed to take our kids too) and $2500 in PPQ number plates. Part of the holiday was a Endota spa voucher which unfortunately we couldn't use due to the spa closing down after the cyclone passing through the area. Once again the promoter and Endota spa have been excellent and today my wife is off with her boss having close to $900 worth of spa treatments before we go away, as the spa package won is no longer available so they upgraded at no charge.

By far the biggest wins we had last year, both random draws (1 lucky draw, 1 purchase required) which really shows you do have to be in it to win it and everyday people do win these things. I wanted to say thanks to Katie2014 and gnv9 and all posters as both of the above are experiences we would have never had without entering competitions and I'm thankful to all posters who take the time to post comps they find.

Good luck to all, I can't wait to see what 2018 has in stall and I especially look forward to hearing of all your winnings too!

      wow congrats Smalot!!
I entered that Fishermans friend one SO many times lol! Had an instant win so all was not lost :D
I have found that some promoters have been fantastic to deal with, others not so much, luck of the draw I guess.
One particularly large company that I won a trip through was terrible, overstated the prizes worth by thousands, and then tried to get out of providing what was included.
Another was fabulous and even added in extra overseas flights for free!!!

        Thanks Cristobel.

          Yes fingers crossed!!
I've won a family weekend away this year already so we are all happy!

  • Is there any way to get email notifications of each new competition? Currently it seems the only way to get notified of competitions is to be subscribed to the competitions for a particular store or get notifed of competitions that make it to the front page

I don't want to subscribe to every store just so it might have a competition that I get notified of. I would just like to get an email for each new competition that is posted.

    Thanks

    • 563 posted in February = 20/day

You sure you want an email for each one?!

    • I use the Live Action page and select Comp in the Type drop down. Easy to check out new comps as they are posted.

    • There isn't that functionality however in My Account - Subscriptions - Events you can subscribe to when a competition reaches the front page.

A not 100% accurate way would to create a search alert for the word win and filter by competitions. Hit create alert. Assuming the comps mentions win in the title/description then it should be alright.

A completely accurate way but requires more work would be to use the competition RSS feed. Personally I use Feedly (an rss reader), and see every deal posted, subscribe to The Age, Lifehacker etc so this would slot in well if you use an RSS reader. Some email clients like Outlook have the ability to add RSS feeds.

If you definitely want an email, you can take the RSS feed and use an RSS to email service like Blogtrottr or an IFTTT recipe.

      • Is there a way to create a search alert for competitions where EFTPOS/ Visa/ Cash are the prizes?

        • @neil:
THanks, is there a way to filter current competitions?

        • @mmd:

You'll get an email every time that phrase is found so should only be current competitions that mention EFTPOS.

        • @neil:

Thanks, how come I can't upvote your comment?

    totally worth it.

  • Merged from Enter to Win - What Have You Won?

    Hi ladies and gents,

I have been a regular visitor to the Ozbargain site in the last 5 years(https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/325708).

However, a big part of this site includes - New Competitions

I have always wondered how many people actually enter these comps and what they have actually won.

I do not recall ever entering into any (here and outside of OzBargain).

So my question to you - What have you won that you value the most??

  • ScreenPlay had got rid of their weekly comps this year , but now with the show cancelled there definitely won't be anymore.

  • +1

    Why is there this rule?

Do not post competitions that have not yet started - these will be removed by a moderator.

As long as there's enough information, letting people know about a comp before it started can only be useful.

    • I believe there were several situations where people entered comps before they were open for entering which lead to some confusion. As there isn't a field for opening date, there is no indicator to when the comp starts. So the easiest approach is to just post the comp after the start dates. You can save the comp to drafts and then post when open so shouldn't be too difficult.

  • does anyone know the code word for https://www.ekka.com.au/education/ekka-learning-trail

  • Merged from Competitions to Enter in The Site!

    Hey Fellow OzBargainers!

I am new to here and I have a question.

Are the competitions posted over the section relavant or, how do I decide whether it is a relavant one?
Are there anyone who got lucky to their 'super attractive' prizes? Or are those just ways of flooding your mail box?

Thanks in advance for all answers.

    Cheers

    • Only you can decide whether a competition is relevant to you - e.g if the prize is a baby stroller and you don't have a baby then I would suggest it is not relevant. I have won a few prizes from competitions over the years - definitely worth having a go!

      • This relevance strategy can also be applied to items listed as Bargains.

        • @baysew, what do you mean?

      • Thanks for the info.
Hearing that someone has won the prizes is just enough

    • I love entering completions, this is my go to place to enter competitions, I havenā€™t won in months but the last comp I won was a ps4 foosball table and some other goodies through Facebook worth $1500 bucks, my 2nd biggest win will have to be a tv worth about $1100 but that was a couple of years ago and was a purchase competition . Not many people enter purchase competitons.

      • That really is great news!! (Congratulations! From months/years back :D)

Purchase comp means, you will have to purchase something, right?

        • Yes! I purchased some fruit and veggies from my
Local green grocer and won the tv!

  • Hey guys, i'm trying to win a stratco shed voucher for my partner. If you vote you also go in the draw to winning a card. Heres my entry! Thanks for your help

    Hi Ozbargainers,
Long time viewer, first time poster. I'm a finalist in an online competition where I could potentially win $50K. I need a hand getting votes on my video to stand a chance of winning.
I'm wondering if: a) in this forum is it polite to ask for your support to help win by upvoting my video?
    b) what could I offer in return for helping me out? I can't do cash but was thinking maybe gift vouchers?

Admin, please delete if this post is inappropriate.

    • +1

      Hi Nacho Nacho Man,

Congrats on making it through as a finalist :)

I'm not sure which comp you're referring to, but perhaps first just check the T&Cs regarding votes etc, so that you don't get disqualified, as some comps have specific terms about votes.

Otherwise, I'm sure that the OzBargain comping community would be more than happy to help, as there have been a few others - here and here - who have posted links to their entries.

  • Thank you! I have posted it in the Click Frenzy forum discussion šŸ˜ŠšŸ˜ŠšŸ˜Š

    https://www.clickfrenzy.com.au/ironshopper.html

I'm Andrea, 5th row from the bottom

  • Question: With all the gleam competitions, once someone has used your referral link, should you be able to go back in and see the entries added?

Did one yesterday (the Nintendo Switch one) and you get 250 extra entries per referral and an extra 500 for doing every option. Going back in, I haven't gotten the 250, and being the last one, should that go through, will get the extra 500, so I am eager to ensure the referral worked properly.

    • +2

Yeah, if someone has used your referral it should show entries received. It should show 250 instead of +250.

      • +1

Ah, OK. That makes sense (was expecting a tick) as it would increase depending on how many times the referral was used.

I'm just waiting on the complete all sections 500 entries to update now.

        Cheers mate.

I just started comping last month using OZB and another site. Have won 8 x 25 words or less comps with prizes totalling about $1800. I feel like Iā€™ll have to change phone numbers soon so that companies donā€™t remember me lol.

I just wanted to say a giant thank you to gnv9. Youā€™re a legend!

    • Wow that's impressive stats, especially for WOL comps!
      Well Done!!

      • +2

Thanks mate. I just won another just then. The thing I love about comps is that it keeps my brain ticking constantly, and makes toilet time more productive!

Has anyone ever won anything from competitions: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/competition/all ?
    Or it's all hoax?
I have seen people participating in these competitions but never heard someone winning.
There is nothing bad in participation, just interested to know your stories.

    Thanks.

    • +1

I've won a reasonable amount of $ worth of prizes over the years despite, spending very little overall effort trying to win.

Won tickets to the 98 world cup in France from Canon (ended up selling them outside the stadium as not all of us had tickets for the games). More recently last year won a 34" Dell U3415W screen, Sony HT-X9000F sound bar (Sony competition), Toaster from the Lawson bread comp, and $50 from the Up&Go cash promo (awaiting EFT).

      • +1

I won something recently, first time, couldn't believe it

        • +2

Some are more memorable than other. Another chance win was of a Nintendo Wii. Picture this:

Year was 2009. I was staying overnight in Ceduna, SA whilst contracting (Gillard government, Building the Education Revolution project). Walked in to deli there and something (probably the damn heat) made me crave the taste after seeing it in the freezer (rainbow paddle pop).

As I was about to dispose of the stick, caught a glimpse of something on it which turned out to be prize.

I can count the number of paddle pop's I've had in my life on both hands. :)

  • Merged from How Many Competitions Have You Won This Year?

    Hi all,

Wanted to see how everyone else is going with their entry:win rate?

I have entered around 1000 this year and won just 2! But read and hear of stories of people winning weekly and netting huge prizes so wondered if I am doing very poorly!!

    Thanks

    • Keep doing what you're doing.

Got to be in it to win it.

  • Sorry if this has been answered before

When you enter a Gleam completion that involves selling your soul for data harvesting….

If you have to ā€œfollow on Twitterā€ to enter or ā€œretweet to enterā€ or other types of spam sign ups, can you then immediately unfollow and undo the retweet and retain entry eligibility? Anyone know? Or does it vary comp to comp?

  • Merged from Competitions….have you entered and won a prize?

I have been an Oz Bargain user for some years now and have entered hundreds of competitions
on the Comps page and have never won anything. Was just wondering if anyone has won any of
the major prizes over the years.

  • RIP Kids WB

  • Merged from Are You Still in The Running for Competitions if You Unsubscribe from Newsletters after You Have Entered?

Same goes for following people on Twitter for competitions done through Gleam, do they still keep you in or are you supposed to stay subscribed to have a chance?

    • Gleam you need to be following on the linked social medias etc at time of draw
They also sell your data to third parties (which you agree to when you use Gleam.. why i never enter any comp that uses it)

  • So I've entered a few jb hi fi 25wol competitions where you comment on their Facebook post. None of the comps I enter in are drawn as per the terms and conditions. E.g. a Marley headphone one I entered was meant to be drawn o3/02 the day in which it closed. 12 days later there's no replys on the post selecting a winner or anything listed on their comp page which they state is the procedure. A few other comps they have are the same. Delayed or a bit of a rort happening ?

  • Merged from People Who Enter Competitions Online, Do You Enter Your Real Information?

Are people entering their real phone number, DoB, postcode, etc or putting in fake info?

    • +4

If you put fake info what happens if you win?

    • Obviously depends from person to person. I personally just enter my spam deets.

    • I give fake contact details.

      Never won anything but.

    • Depends on the prize. If you put completely fake details and it's a large prize, you may need to provide ID to claim.

      • +1

I won a prize recently with Network 10 and needed to provide ID - it was for a $1000 gift card though. Haven't had to provide anything for the smaller comp prizes

    • Real info, and an email address that I use only for entering competitions that I change every year

    • +2

I put fake phone numbers. No one has ever rang me to say I've won.

    • +3

I put fake address. No one has ever mailed me to say I've won.

    • +2

i put some real details, but i also have junk email addresses which i use specifically for online stuff

    • I don't put in any details.

That'll teach them for running competitions that I don't win.

    • +1

One of the online sports bet companies ran a $5 odds promo for a team to win recently. I put in the maximum, but for some reason I gave fake details. When I tried to withdraw winnings they needed me to verify ID. As I couldn't verify ID, they just refunded me instead of giving me 5x what I put in, and they cited my fake details as a reason for not paying out.

    • +1

I don't believe majority of competitions/giveaways are actually real so don't bother. Maybe the occasional when it's a reputable company doing it themselves, but random blogs and youtubers/small sites? Not worth the effort. It's all harvesting your data.

    • Why bother entering with fake details? How will you then know if you've won?

Keeping in mind it is up to the promoter as to how people are contacted. Normally they use email to reach out to winners and maybe contact phone number if it's something major.

    • Olympus digital camera courtesy of MX back in the day
    • a clothing pack from Uniqlo when they first launched in Aus
    • 2x return flights to India thanks to Scoot via Facebook (though there were fees and it was such a pain to book with them…!!)
    • 2x return flights to USA via Qantas thanks to Mr Burger. Actually the first prize winner never claimed so I was next. They were so good about being flexible my 1 week trip turned into 3 and I purchased flights to NY as I never thought I would go to America. Included flights were Mel > LA and LA > Green Bay return.
    • 2x flights to NZ at a movie night - Queenstown was AMAZING! Thanks to Air NZ.
    • various gift cards… in the last 12 months… 1x $500 gift card and over $100 thanks to Ozb posting about the Mutti gift card comp!
    • Have won smaller amounts in gift cards over the years, $10-50 at a time.
    • random Canadian Club gear. Best thing was Adidas sneakers and ski goggles, also a onesie but it's quite embarrassing to wear lol

No it wasn't a video, it was when they started flying to India - I used my flights before 2018. I think it was just a quiz?

Iā€™ve entered a few of the competitions that are linked on ozbargains. I won a prize from RM Williams last year.

The gleam comps always seem to complicated so I never enter them.

    • +2
      • I never knew this. Thanks!

      • I wonder how many people use this, I personally wouldnā€™t as the competition often publishes your name if you win. Iā€™d rather remain anonymous on OzB, even if itā€™s just the first name that is published.

        • +2

          A lot.

I personally love this feature. It helps me to know straight away whether I've lost (as someone else has evidently won) so I can unsubscribe quickly and move on to fantasising about winning another comp.

          • @tallkid123: Ahā€¦ I didnā€™t realise you get a notification when someone wins. I used to mark as having entered to help me keep track but never that Iā€™m the winner.

            • @morse: You dont get notified…

You just check the winner page whenever and just put 2 and 2 together.

  • Has anyone has trouble with logging into Gleam in Firefox recently?

This impacts embedded Gleam widgets (embedded into another website.)
When the entry form is hosted on a gleam URL it works OK for me.

I have tracking protections and ublock turned off for comp websites, but that hasn't helped.

  • Has anyone won a prize that used Gleam but you didn't complete all the entry chances to increase your odds.

    • Lol, only seeing this now.

Yes, I have won a number of Gleam giveaways without completing all the entry chances. I don't use Discord or Twitch so I don't enter using those methods, yet I have won presumably from my other Twiter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. entries.
