Samsung is planning on cutting the prices of its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge (read about it on kitguru) smartphones very soon and surely this phone would go even lower when the Note 5 and Note 5 Edge is released this month or early next month.

    • +1

They already have for S6 Edge in Korea.

    • well-predicted

      • I keep seeing people complain about laggy Note 4's - doesn't feel to me like I should be paying a premium for one, I'll wait for a $500 or less deal.

        • I was considering a Note 4, but G4 just seems like a better phone. I'd get the Note if I had any use for the S-pen for sure

  • +9

Decent price but I'm guessing it's mostly down to the fact that the Note 5 is due to be released next week or two.

    • +9

The Note 5 is coming - but it's going to be Samsung CPU (no Cyanogen mod), enclosed battery, no SD card. So for a lot of people the Note 4 might be what they are after.

The Note 4 running CM is freaking awesome - running Touchwizz - not so much…

      • +5

How's the compatibility with the S-Pen on CM?

        • +1

Awesome - it works great - there are a few other apps you can get from the App store which mimic the Touchwizz stuff in regards to functions etc. It's worth it just to not have to look at Touchwizz in my opinion - I can't stand what Samsung do with Android!!

        • Use papyrus instead of spen

Overall cm is very good. I used to think touchwiz goodies are useful….
Ive never used multiwindow apart from showing off…I've never used pop up video…

        • -1

also fingerprint, sensors etc do not work on cm so whats the point to buy samsung hardware, almost half of this price there are a lot better options like oneplus 2 elephone

        • @bunnybash: Preach for that. My friend had a S5 with CM, and he restored it back to stock for some ungodly reason. Whenever I say "I hate TouchWiz, CM FTW" he gets pissed off. He now has an S6, and he's not gonna put a ROM on it until 3 months of having it. Grrrr.

      • Oh! Could you tell me more? I know Samsung has generally been pretty uptight about sharing info with developers, but I didn't know this could completely block custom ROMs. I'm coming from a HTC One M8 that plays very nicely with roms, but I wanted to try the Note 5 when it comes out. No custom ROMs may be a dealbreaker.

      • +1

I wouldn't be surprised if they brought back the expandable memory and removable battery in the Note 5 considering the flack they got because the S6 didn't have those.

        • +1

The photos have been leaked. It won't have expandable memory.

        • @lostn:
Fair enough. Currently on contract with a Note 4, will have to see what the Note 6 brings.

        • @WoodenSpoon: Umm Note 5? Oh no, the wooden spoon again. RUNS—-

      • +3

Why not wait for the iPhone 6s/6s Plus…. (I'm kidding, don't hurt me).

  • +1

This seems slightly too expensive to me now. The Note 5 is due for retail sale here in Australia likely as soon as 4 weeks, probably at the very most 10.
The Note 4, while a good phone, I hear a lot of complaints about poor support for it from Samsung on XDA developers and Sammobile.

I'd definitely consider snapping one of these up at say $550 and no hesitation at $500 but more than that seems a no go to me.
Does DSE do cashrewards? Any coupons or way to get this cheaper?

    • +1

I doubt the support for the Note 5 would be any better, especially with Exynos cpu.

      • +1

Yes and no, it's brand new so presumably Android M will be ported to the Note 5, by Samsung quite quickly.
I suspect Samsung MIGHT port Android M to the Note 4 within 6 months of it coming out (sigh,… Android.. sometimes I wonder..)

Regardless, $699 is a lot of cash when it's been that price ages ago according to OzBargain search.

    • +6

You can buy Woolworths gift cards at 5% off grom Cashrewards and then use them to pay at DSE. So, effectively you get further 5% discount.

    • Note 4, having been Iphone to Note 3 and at present Note 4 is a great phone(to me). Never had issues. Won me over. Highly recommend.

  • Any deals on note edgem

  • I read that Note 4 has a sensor for oxygen saturation. Is it true for Australian version?

    • Yes

    • What on earth are you going to use the oxygen saturation sensor for?

It absolutely has no day to day consumer function.

Please don't mention to track it during exercise as I will have to refer you to read about respiratory physiology…

      • +2

It's day to day consumer function is to allow the gullible and neurotic to believe they are taking accurate measurements that they then track pointlessly.

      • +1

I use mine in the same place I keep my gerbil, to ensure it can still breathe. Unfortunately they seem to pass out from methane poisoning :(

        • I would just stick with the phone. As it can vibrate on command which the gerbil can't

      • For myself, just for fun. It's probably going to be 98-99. But it might be useful if I see someone lying unconscious on my daily walk.

        • +2

Checking the oxygen sats is probably the last thing you care about for an unconscious person on the street.

Instead you should probably start CPR? Though I note from your username that you might be against this :P

The device is probably neither accurate nor precise and is purely marketing BS. Shame it seems to be working…

        • @plasmapuff:
Not every unconscious needs CPR though. If the person looks to be breathing fine, confirmed by good oxygen sat, I'll gladly do nothing.

I think it's reasonable for Samsung to find ways to differentiate its product, the mobile phone market is so competitive, sometimes I feel sorry for the manufacturers (except Apple of course).

Generally I find people who can afford a Note 4. Wont be staying in a cabin and need to burn wood or run a diesel engine for warmth.

If they actually do then they probably got their priorities wrong.

  • I'm definitely expecting a further price drop once the Note 5 hits shelves. This is the usual price drop before the usual price drop thing that all retailers do. Hang out for another few weeks and you can get the Note 4 for much cheaper I am guessing.

    • That's if you can resist the temptation to get the Note 5.

      • +4

That's going to be pretty darn easy considering the gimped features and likely insane pricing (like the S6)

    • What do you reckon, another $50? I wonder how low it can go.

  • +1

    I'll buy one when it's below $400.

    • +2

      See ya in 3 years

    • +1

      I'd rather actually have the Moto X 2015 for $50 more (USD). Nicer phone too, SD808, 20MP, 5.7 1440P.

      • Nicer phone too

I wouldn't really say that. The reviews aren't in yet for the Style, and the specs are pretty much equivalent to the Note 4 anyway.

        • But it runs stock Android, has a nicer design (personal opinion).

        • @Droidyy:

True, software-wise Samsung continues to drop the ball.

    • For Orpheus (sorry). I just sold my old Note 3 i'd been hanging onto for far too long, for nearly $400.

    • +1

+1, very smart ! Its not worth that much, i dont mind for 300, no more than thar though …

  • Really dahm cheap especially for the phone I consider still in the top 10 available right now. However with Note 5 approaching it's obvious why the price is lowered. This is the FIRST time I am legitly worried that the reasons to upgrade to Note 5 won't be too compelling for most people and in fact may be backwards. With this in mind it's a great deal.

If you don't care about a replaceable battery or SD Card I highly recommend not getting this. Finally a 128GB Note phone will be available in Australia with the upcoming Note 5.

With the Note I am of the opinion comparing it to phones with no stylus is completely unfair. I've even seen reviews almost completely ignore it! I wonder how Samsung will deliver a noticeable upgrade with the S Pen functionality this time, as it's already 2048 sensitivity on Note 4.

  • Hm, may buy if there happens to be a decent promo code on the day. Combining with 5% off Woolies card and TRS should get it down to a decent price.

  • +1

Buy 7 x $100 gift cards from this deal then you have a real bargain at $594.15

    • Is there such a thing as an Amex card with a 0$ per year fee to use the card though ? So it's effectively not costing you anything to have the card?
I've got 3 CCards all of them have 0$ per year fees.

    • Which gift card sold at Dan Murphy's is usable at dick Smith btw?

(Thanks again, I now have an amex)

      • Wish Cards, which can be used also at Wiolworths, Big W, Masters, Dans etc

    • Sorry to bug you again, would I have needed SEVEN cards to do this, or only one Amex? Do they reward multiple times?

      • +1

Seven cards. It's only one statement credit per registered card.

  • No need to rush guys. No one buyin it..

  • -1

The question im going to ask, has anyone bought it yet from this deal , i know im not…

    • The sale doesn't start until tomorrow so no one has purchased one yet.

      • Current price is $727, a 3.85% discount is a dynamite deal according to Dick. I wonder how much it would be if it was on one of those extra, extra, extra large sales?

  • +1

I just got it at $727 last week, at DSE in David Jones. Used 10% discounted David Jones gift cards to buy, and then will TRS when I travel.

I upgraded from Note 1 to Note 4 and really loving it!!!!!

  • I am holding on hopefully to see it drop close to $500, need a BIG screen phone, when you getting older, my eyes getting worst …

    • Yes good for that reason too. Also use the stylus if you have big fingers. Too funny.

    • If you look for a big phone, I've heard good things about LG G Pro 2. Those probably are cheaper than Note 4 (if you can find them).

      • Yeah my colleages is using a G Pro 1 now, amazing good and hugh screen, pity they stopped production, too risky to get those from ebay, as i heard lots of refurb and sell as brand new.

  • Can possibly price match this at JB Hi-Fi and get a free chromecast and $20 google play store voucher

    • Could you use amex, cash rewards, or woolies vouchers to further reduce it with a price match?

      • Probably not cash rewards because price matching will be in store but if there is an Amex deal then surely and you can always use woolies vouchers to buy discounted Jb gift cards then use them

  • If Note 5 starting price is under $899, I might buy one to replace my S5.
