  • Hmm are these china tablets getting Cherry Trail atoms anytime soon?

    • Yes. The large troop of the cherry trail products are coming. Better hold your money and wait for the new wave to come. They will be dual boot windows 10 and Android 5.

  • +2

got the 3G version (air 1 earlier this year)

not too bad, better on android in battery life department

but better speaker on win 8

Cherry Trail / Core M stuff already out but at 3XX USD level at the moment, Intel seem to live up to the rumors of not giving as much discount as the 37XX series this year,

    • I was actually expecting them to be more expensive (since I've heard that Intel was losing fair bit of money from subsidising Baytrail tablets). I might wait and see how Cherry trail X7 tablets cost (at least on benchmark, there were not much differences between Cherry Trail and Bay Trail in terms of CPU, GPU have improved though, so I might weigh both options).

  • There is a Teclast X98 Pro being announced on the 10th August with the Cherry Trail and 4GB RAM; some details have been leaked on techtablets.com.
It will be more expensive, but probably more powerful as well.

  • I'd rather get a deal on the X98 Pro, as it can be used for productivity purposes

    • How does x5 z8500 compare against z3740 and other baytrail tablets?

I've seen the benchmark comparisons between x7 one (i.e. Surface 3), but never seeen one with x5.

  • I all. I've not looked at tablets for a long time. I have an old Sony Xperia S (SGPT1211) and am noticing it's quite slow. Mainly for Android would this be a decent upgrade or not good value for money??

    • I'd assume that it'd be an upgrade from the CPU and GPU side, however, there are few things I have to point out. Since I don't own it, I don't know how well they've optimised the Android side, so there is uncertainty there. Also, I am not sure how the audio side would be like. Not sure about how camera would function. I think CPU and GPU would struggle through the high resolution screen, though this is sort of like guessing from my experiences with high resolution Android tablets (and it may not apply to this).

That said, I think it's a bargain at this price, though, this is me judging from the paper spec and benchmarks, YMMV.

good youtube review - seems great but can't game on it other than what is in the microsoft store

        • I think these will run older games and non-demanding games alright. It's a netbook (though the resolution might be too high).

        • @AznMitch: Resolution can be decreased on the Windows side.

        • @Clear: The problem I see is, Atom CPU is not exactly powerful enough to run things fluently at that kind of resolution. Not to mention the horrible implementation from the third party for high DPI options on Windows (though since it's double the relatively common resolution 1024x768, it might be alright on that end).

        • @Clear:

Can you please confirm the band of external 3G? Eg 850mhz 900 mhz etc?

        • @arctan: External 3G refers to an external device used for 3G like a 3G USB dongle. The Teclast X98 Air 3G has inbuilt 3g, but it's only 2100MHz.

    • +1

My recommendation is that you look at the reviews and see for yourself. Expect there to be cons, but I'd like to find a tablet that doesn't have any. I've linked some for you below :)

  • Bought and selected TNT delivery but it put the order into standard shipping.
Emailed them hopefully to pay extra for DHL.

    Has Geekbuying removed TNT delivery?

    • +1

TNT is not available for the Hong Kong warehouse unfortunately. PM me your order number , so I can make sure it gets fixed for you.

      • Hi,

I've ordered this item and the order is currently listed as "processing".

Given the time that it is likely to take processing, I am wondering if there's any option to pay and upgrade to DHL shipping as I'm likely to become impatient.

Happy to PM you my order details.

        Thanks.

        • +1

Quickest way for you to get a response would be to try the live chat in the top right corner of geekbuying.com

Emailing [email protected] is another method, but try live chat first.

        • @Clear:

I opened a livechat and was told I needed to pay 5.8 USD for the additional EMS service rather than Airmail. This was paid and the order number was forwarded to the customer service rep.

Now I've just received an email telling me that I should have been charged 20 USD and I need to pay the balance before the item is shipped. For reference when I originally ordered the item, the EMS option (which I noticed but did not choose) was 5.8 USD rather than 20 USD.

          A little annoyed unfortunately.

        • +1

@Skeletor: When they said 5.80 US did you ask for DHL? I know that DHL is usually around that price and EMS is a bit more expensive.

        • @Clear:

I actually asked about both. I was told 5.8 for EMS and more like 7 USD for DHL.

DHL is supposed to be a faster service according to my research. I'm surprised that it would be the cheaper service.

        • +1

@Skeletor: DHL is cheaper because it uses only 1 company… DHL. EMS is an agreement across multiple companies worldwide. It will be shipped from either China or Hong Kong's express service and then passed onto Auspost when it reaches our shores. Because of this it's slower than DHL or TNT.

        • @Clear:

          Ok,

So now I am being told 14USD extra for EMS and 19USD extra for DHL (on top of the 5.8 USD I already paid).

This is inconsistent with the information at checkout and the information I was given when I sought to upgrade to EMS.

I am trying to go back to Airmail and have the extra money paid for the "upgrade" refunded.

        • +1

@Skeletor: I can pass your order number onto my contact and see if something can be worked out.

        • @Clear:

That would be appreciated however I am in the process of changing back to Airmail at the moment.

          PM sent.

        • @Skeletor:

Sorry I didn’t PM you the order details Clear.

As a new member who created an account to write to you, I reached my posting limit for the day. I will PM you my order numbers now

After my original request to upgrade postage and making payment I received the following email:
“Sorry for the inconvenience, we found that u change airmail into ems, And i fact u should pay 20 usd, But u pay 5.8 usd, so u still pay 14.usd, thanks for ur kind understanding. If u have some doubles, pl contact the chat live, “

I consequently reentered livechat and asked the customer service rep to refund the extra 5.8 USD which I paid for EMS after I was told that the information I was given was incorrect and that EMS would require me to pay an additional 14 USD on top of what I originally paid.

The customer service representative (“Mandy”) said that this refund would take place.

4 hours later I received the following email:
          “Hello sir, Are u there
We are sorry for the inconvenience, just now ourstaffs were punished by the matter, for this order, sir u should pay 15 usd, or we can not process ur order, sorry for this.”

I asked for clarification as to why this extra 15 USD was required for Geekbuying to process an order for which I had already paid in full. I received the following email in reply:
“I am very sorry for this. just now we talked this with the manager, for EMS, u should pay 20 usd.

I replied politely asking what the 15 USD was for (it was 14 earlier?) and why I couldn’t just be refunded the 5.8 USD which I’d paid to upgrade shipping and have the item sent via Airmail as originally planned.

The customer service rep asked for confirmation of my order number which I provided. I checked the status of the order this morning and the order has been deleted from the system along with all record of me paying for the additional postage.

So far I have paid 176.99 + 5.8 USD = about $257 AUD for an item and Geekbuying appears to have removed any record of the order without confirmation or an explanation of why.

I am becoming very suspicious and quite worried that I will now need to open a Paypal dispute and wait several months to recover my money.

Is there anything you could please do to help? I understand that things can operate differently when dealing with overseas vendors, however I’m still surprised with how badly this is being handled.

        • @Skeletor: That sounds horrible :(

        • +1

@hybir: I've sent him a PM and linked the comment to GB staff, so it should be all sorted very soon. ;)

        • @Clear:

Just an update, Geekbuying refunded the postage which I paid for the shipping upgrade though I haven't been informed as to whether the original item will be sent at all. Tomorrow the order will have been processing for 7 days, and while there is an argument for me remaining patient, it would be nice to know if the item will actually be shipped given that the statements earlier were ambiguously worded which I took to mean as "u pay 20 USD or we will not process your order at all", and this was compounded by the difficulty I had in subsequently explaining that I would be happy for the item to be sent via regular Airmail.

I don't believe Geekbuying ever deleted my order. I've noticed when I log on there is a "Your Orders" section which relates to the unpaid orders so nothing was showing. Unfortunately it isn't that obvious that this order page only relates to the unpaid orders, so I'd come to the erroneous assumption that my orders were not on the system.

        • +1

@Skeletor: Just confirmed with Geekbuying that your order is being shipped as soon as possible.

        • @Clear:

Thanks Clear, I actually just received the following email:
          "Good day, dear.
For this item, it is selling well in the market, and the quantity of this item is up to 1000 order. and would u mind wait for this? Once we get this, we will ship it at once,"

I've tried to get an indication of when the item will be shipped. If it's going to take another week before it's ready to be shipped, I might as well just turn to Aliexpress and get the item for $20 cheaper: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Teclast-X98-Air-II-Windows-In…

        • +1

          @Skeletor:
For the 64GB dual boot model, it's $199USD on that Aliexpress page.

I would recommend sticking to 64GB for Windows/Android as 32GB is very constraining.

        • @hybir:

Yep I agree about the 64gb part.

This is the one I found on Ali. $230 AUD shipped and over 1000 orders (if that's any indication of reliability?)
          http://www.aliexpress.com/item/9-7-Teclast-X98-3G-Intel-Bay-…

It's not marked as the 2nd gen x98, but they look like they have the same processor and screen.

I'm not even sure if there are two generations of this product.

        • +1

@Skeletor: Old generation has slower eMMC storage. The one Geekbuying sells has the faster Samsung eMMC.

        • @Clear:

I received the following email on 20 August 2015:
"Dear, for this item, the factory will need 11-14 days to do this item, if they finish, we get this one, we can ship it, would u mind waiting for this,?"

Followed it up asking if that meant the item would ship in 11-14 days but didn't receive a response. Literally speaking, it seems like Mandy was suggesting that it will take 11-14 days to build the tablet.

I suppose this means that they are ordering in more units, right?

        • @Skeletor: That's what it sounds like. I'll confirm it though.

        • +1

          @Clear:

I received the item a couple of weeks ago. All is working well.

Thanks again for your generous assistance.

    • +3

Just received the tablet today and its in perfect working order, very satisfied with Geekbuying so far and much appreciate the help from Clear.

      Summary:
      - Bought tablet on 08/08
      - Sent email to support/PM'd Clear to switch to DHL shipping
      - Geekbuying responded next business day and switched the shipping on 10/08
      - Tablet shipped on 12/08
      - Delivered and arrived 14/08

I believe Geekbuying takes some time to set up the tablet for English and uninstalls some Chinese android apps before sending it out.

As for the tablet itself, very impressive for AU$250.

      • 2048x1536 display, much sharper than my Surface Pro 1
      • The model I received was a Teclast Air II 64GB HG9M, using Samsung eMMC memory with 160mb/s Read and 100mb/s Write
      • Build quality is not near as solid as Apple/Microsoft, but quite good for a cheap tablet (white smooth front face with metal backing with fine roughness)
      • Camera is dreadful but I'll never use it anyway so it's fine

      Overall, no regrets!
