Wouldn't consider this a deal. Plex is now permanently free on iOS with the majority of its features behind the monthly/yearly/lifetime paywall.

Almost anyone using Plex will still want to unlock its full functionality through an in-app purchase; by default, the free app only lets you use it as a remote control for whatever's currently streaming or send photos and videos from your iPhone's camera roll to the TV. If you've already paid for Plex, you'll keep access to its full set of features.

I agree. This is forum material. But at least some basic functionality (remote control) is now free that used to be paid, but overall not really a "deal" because it's not a limited-time offer, that basic functionality will always be free from now on.

Can anyone confirm that a one-time $6.49 IAP unlock is available (in perpetuity) rather than needing a subscription? And existing users are automatically upgraded without losing features?

If the Full feature IAP was on special, then that would be a deal.

      • Assuming the one-time fee is equal to Androids, it will be $6.09~. I am currently trying to find clarification on the Plex Pass subscription vs. one-time purchase.
Existing users are automatically upgraded without further purchase necessary. If you don't have the features make sure you press "retrieve purchase/s".

They did the same with Android. They rolled it into one "free" app that requires Plex Pass subscription. The original difference between the paid app and the free app was that the paid app got updates before the free app. Now they've basically got rid of that model and gone for more of a "support app" for Plex. It's still all the same functionality as the paid app. Even with the old paid app, you still needed to have a Plex Pass subscription to do syncing from your own server etc.

So.. this is definitely not a deal and more of a consolidation of an out of date mode of application updating.

        • @light487: I see. Nothing special then, thanks for the clarification!

    • So what happens to everyone that paid for it?

I paid for a heap of apps (example Words With Friends vs Words With Friends Free) that later merged into a freemium app, so now I'm stuck with ads on them all. Not happy.

Thanks, was looking to buy this over the weekend but was $6.49 even with a Plex Pass.

It will still be the same cost to get the same features, just that it is an IAP now, so unless you were only going to buy it to be a remote control, it makes no difference.

I own a Plex Pass, before I still had to pay $6.49 for the IOS app. Even though I had a Plex Pass I still had to pay for the app. Now its free I get all the features available without having to pay $6.49. So the difference it makes to me is $6.49

        • That's a good point, but still, being a deal for Plex Pass holders (which isn't cheap mind you) to not pay twice anymore is a very narrow deal.

      • I found a loophole that allows you to get full functionality for free.
You will need an ios device running a version older than ios8.

Simply download app in iTunes on your PC. Then go to App Store on device and download a copy of the app. It will offer you the previous version 3.5.2 as the minimum supported ios for version 4 is 8.1.

All the details are in the original post, including that there is an unlock and/or in app purchase required. I have no issue with the OP putting this up and then letting people decide if they want it. It can be daunting to decide whether to put a post up so a bunch of negative comments may cause somebody to hold off on posting something I really want; it certainly makes me very reluctant to post often. If you don't think it is a great deal then don't buy it but hold off on the negs.

A Neg vote is a reflection of the Deal not of the person and I encourage anyone to post any deal they think is worthy regardless of how they think that the community will receive it

      • Some members will take it personally and they'll think twice before posting again.

        • +1

and they will get over it and the next post will be a better deal!

        • @skinny: and maybe they won't.

        • @try2bhelpful: oh Boy! I am trying to look at the full part of the glass.

    from the plex blog:

"And of course if you’ve purchased the app already, you’ll have full access."

  • I don't have a problem if you don't think it's a deal but I think others might. I myself have never tried Plex but have always been curious and the cost of the iOS app put me off. Now I can give it a try and see what it's like and Plex are obviously trying to get new customers by making it free. Thanks to people who mentioned the cost of the Plex pass and other info.

It's been a popular deal in the past so I thought I'd post.

I hate the plex pass model. It works out way to expensive for what it is. I would be happy to pay, say $5, per app on the devices I need but iirc $150 for lifetime is too expensive.

    • +1

$75 for early bird was fine, plus supporting developers is usually a good thing!

      • Supporting developers is fine and I want to do that. But it needs to be at a price which I perceive as value. I don't think $150 is value for the product.

    • +1

It had a decent price point to support the devs before they hiked the prices.

      • +2

Yup. I didn't really need a lifetime subscription, but when I saw they were going to increase the price, I immediately bought a lifetime subscription. :)

I don't think anyone would like to pay $6.49 for the free functions listed above.

  • -2

lol, I can stream 1 minute to any device with this app….

Neg the deal not the poster, sounds like you need the ~$6 of functions for this to be useful

  • +1

This is the normal deal, the free version is limited until you pay. It has been this way for a while.

  • What would be the best free app to stream as an alternative for IOS

    • Air Video HD is what I use as a backup, sometimes.
