Good price for that package, and the Mi4i looks like a decent phone for the price. Shame they dont have NFC.

    • +9

Do you use NFC regularly. I have got NFC on my phone and never got a chance to use it.

      • +1

I didn't think I did, but since I moved to the RedMi Note 4G I have missed it, NFC was super useful for pairing with my ActionCam, A7, bluetooth earphones etc.

        • Which action cam did you use? Would you recommend?

        • +2

@wang: I have an AS100V and would definitely recommend one. The Sony ActionCam'ss allow you to power them externally whilst recording (you need to enable in menu), something that I have had trouble being able to confirm in the GoPro (they apparently go into comptuer mode).

        • +4

          @aim54x:

Confirmed. My Gopro does not accept charge from powerbank and record at the same time. Total epic fail…….

Sounds like the Sony cam is a better option.

        • @djcharliek: thanks, I've heard it from a few people and pretty much have given up hope they will add that feature

        • +3

          @djcharliek:

Make a cable with only the power connected and it's fine , or use a cheap power bank so it doesn't try to be smart

        • +1

@peter05: NFC comes in handy for cameras that have wifi direct and nfc. So easy to transfer photos using NFC, however you can connect manually too. Good price for that phone

        • +1

@peter05: Thats something that is worth trying. Shame I have not ready to spend money on a GoPro

      • +5

@cniminc I use it all the time in my car

I bought some cheap plastic NFC tags with adhesive on the back from ebay and stuck one in my mobile mount in the car. Whenever the phone is put into the cradle, the NFC tag acts a trigger for Tasker. Tasker then turns on bluetooth, wifi, and GPS, launches spotify and adjusts my volume profile. The tag can be set so that this particular profile is only used when the NFC tag is still in close vicinity, so when I remove my phone from the cradle it goes back to how it was before I got into the car.

I also had a NFC tag keyring that I used to turn on my phone's wifi access when I was using my tablet more. I also toyed with the idea of a "connect to wifi" button on my coffee table to people could use my wifi without me having to tell them the password, but I don't think any of my friends really understand NFC yet, and those that do already know my wifi password.

There are plenty of things to do with NFC, especially with Tasker or something similar.

  • Anyone know about warranty?

    • I will ask and post when I get a response.

  • And about shipping time? I'm heading overseas in a week.

    • +1

It's from Taiwan so I don't like your chances.

    • +1

I have previously bought from the same seller and received the phone within 3 working days (via DHL).
      However YMMV

    • They use DHL so you may have a chance mine took about 4 days

  • +4

So weird, I just found out about this phone this morning and was researching all morning then decided I'd pick one up then boom it came up on ebay. It was ment to be. Plus I had a miband but it fell off my wrist sometime without me knowing. Win win.

  • +6

It has non removable battery and no SD card slot =(

    • +2

with no MicroSD slot, it really should have 32gb or 64gb on board to be decent.

      • Mobile.mi.com/in/mi4i/

Model launched in India comes with 32 GB memory. So wait until you get same on eBay.

    • +5

I don't get why companies are removing the SD slots… it's annoying.

      • +5

so u pay more for the model with more storage, fkers

        • this

      • +3

Because people buy cheap & slow SD cards and then blames mobile companies for slower performance. Apple never provides SD slot and recently Samsung did that same with Galaxy S6.

        • +1

and it was one of the reasons I moved from an iphone to android.

  • +7

Would absolutely pick this up if it had SD :( 16 ain't enough

    • agreed

  • +10

Wait until the new Xiaomi Red Note 2 comes out - it goes up for sale on the 16th. The new one has the Superfast Mediatek X10 which is the same CPU as the HTC 9+ (if I remember correct) @ 4 times the price. These will be about $USD152.

Cheaper and faster - hard to argue with

    • no card slot, bummer!

    • Also bigger, 5.5"

Any (3G/4G) band changes between then?

    • Arguably different phone due to larger screen of 5.5" as mentioned by Lukian.
Personally, I don't consider 5" and 5.5" phone to be substitutes

      • +3

Agreed - but some people on OzBargain are interested in a good phone, the difference on the diagonal of 12.5mm. The newer phone is far superior in speed and its running newer Android - and cheaper. For the concept of a substitute each person has their definition

        • I can't disagree with that.

    • +1

This is up for sale at GizChina (http://shop.gizchina.com/redmi-note/xiaomi-redmi-note-2-86.h…) and a couple of other places right now it seems. You mentioned availability on the 16th, are these sites preorders? Do you have any recommendations for the best place to buy from?

Thanks heaps for this recommendation, btw - seems like a fantastic phone for the price!

    • +1

Yes same cpu as 9plus unfortunately the cpu isn't the best, multitasking and games seem to be its weakness going by reviews…. But yeh at that price u cant complain 😊

    • where can you buy it?

      • Geekbuying have preorder up…. I'd get the 32gb version as I am to recall it is also 2.2ghz vs 2.0 as well

        • looks to be both 2.2ghz, plus when are they shippinh these if i buy it now.

        • @kurupted:

Yeah the release was 16th (today) and apparently being shipped 18th

  • Just a word of warning. Specs are good but this phone has a lot of negative reviews. Google it - it has issues with heat and battery life due to snapdragon 615 chip.

A Moto G would be a better buy.

    • -1

Disagree! Using a G2 and its crap!

    • 2015 Moto G will be fine, but the older models have crap all space, which makes them very laggy if you install a dictionary. Source: I have one

      • Ditto.

        • Also, mine recently f***d up somehow and drains battery whenever 3G is turned on. But the lag is the worst…takes 2 minutes to open Chrome sometimes. As the chips get better, Android gets more resource intensive, and cheap phones like the Moto G really lose out.

  • +3

Be crazy to get this over the Redmi Note 2 that was announced yesterday.

I bought one of these phones a couple of months ago and so far, I've been fairly impressed. Was worried a little bit about the lack of storage, but I just use an auto back-up so I don't really need to keep much on the actual phone now. The phone has OS has been regularly updated constantly fixing and improving small issues (at least 3 updates since I've had the phone). For less than $300, i can recommend this as a pretty good mid-spec phone.

  • +1

Just make sure you know what you're buying this phone for. It's no good to be used on Optus, and not so much for the other two either if you want the best 4G reception.
    3G HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100
    FDD-LTE 3(1800), 7(2600)
    TDD-LTE 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500)

    • Thanks for the info!

I guess its a deal breaker for lots of people

  • 5 inch is better in hand than 5.5, I got a Huawei Honor 6 and a Lenovo K3note, I found I rather use the H6 because it is easier in the hand.

So really down to hand size, if you are a big guy with a big hand, then 5.5 is better choice, also one who married their phone to a purse setup should get a bigger screen since it is already BIG enough :p

  • Is there a difference between Mi4 and Mi4i? Reason I ask is ===> http://en.miui.com/thread-94202-1-1.html

Will i get caught by the police?

    • Depends what you did and how keen they are to nab you…. 😁

  • can i use the $50 ebay voucher for this group buy?

    • +3

I successfully used my $50 voucher on this

    • $50 eBay voucher?

  • Thanks OP. Purchased. IMO this is what the Moto G 3rd Gen should have been (spec wise). $229 with the $50 voucher. Couldn't be happier.

  • +4

Received mine today. I'm coming from a Xperia z3 and i goto say…i like this phone a lot more. Screen is nicer, camera is better, size is better, no glass back that shatters after any little drop. Might not be as fast or waterproof but i goto say, i already love this phone.

    • @MyWah which date did you buy yours? I assumed the seller would shipped the items in a batch lot from TW to AU after the deal had finished to save on shipping costs - and then redistribute from AU warehouse to local addresses?

      • +1

I bought it last Friday and they shipped it on Tuesday from Taiwan with dhl. Missed getting it yesterday because no one was home.

  • Any one still waiting for the phone? Still no delivery update for me!

    • same here…. phone hasn't been dispatched yet.
