  • Do you happen to know if this is store specific?

    • +2

I used the chat feature on the Harvey Norman website to ask if this deal was available at other stores but the representative indicated that this deal is store specific. Further, Harvey Norman do not price match non advertised deals.

awesome price.. but i am looking for bluetooth (wireless) headphones :(

    • Same, waiting for a decent price drop.

    • You could check this out Sony SBH-50 I've been looking at buying one myself.

  • +13

why would anyone want to buy these horrible quality headphones?

They ARE owned by Apple, surprise!

        • +5

WTF. I did not know this. That explains everything.

        • +1

@DeafMutePretender: originally in partnership with HTC, when that ended not long after Apple purchased it from Mr Dr Dre and now his a billionaire :)

Lol except Apple computers are actually good

        • +1

Of course they are, they're PC's. They're not good value though.

      • +1

Beats by Apple ;) They really do suck…
I have Beats Studio Ver 1. They have lasted ages thou…
Swapped to these at DSE when my other one's died…Bad move.

        • My ten dollar pair of sony earphones lasted forever too.

    • It's not that suck though. I own lot of headphones n IEM (Asg 1+, Ckr9ltd, 3i, M50X, Hd558,…) and find these are quite useful to listen to music outdoor, look good n sound OK for $86 + u get extra stuffs like cleaning cloth, beats logo sticker, nice case,… which are useless anyway lol

  • Solo is not worth buying. Wait for huge discount on Studio. I remember the Studio was $188 on boxing day last year.

    • Studios are too big.Feels like I have double insulated earmuffs on with some lead weights.

  • +5

for the non audiophile types, they are good headphones for this price. I don't think the studios are woth the full retail price, but for $86 they are extremely solid, and aren't as bad as the headphone snobs make out.

I upgraded from solo to ATH-M50x and while the ATs are superior, they aren't THAT much different in sound when you take out the full isolation of the over ears. The only thing I didn't like about the solos are they were more for sitting around. If you use them while walking, you sorta get a thud thud thud in your ears with each step

    • I don't think the studios are woth the full retail price, but for $86 they are extremely solid

these are the Solo HD though, not the Studios

    • TBH the m50x is actually entry level headphones and even then are considered a bit overpriced for what you get.

I recently took a set of these apart to try and fix for a friend, and hot damn they are cheaply made. All of the parts felt flimsy and weak (the whole reason the set was broken was some plastic had snapped), nothing gave me much confidence.

    • +4

As opposed to what other brand of headphones?

      • +1

        I'll say the ATH M50's
Geez those things are built like tanks. I've dropped them onto concrete, yanked the cord HARD, lightly stepped on it. All accidental of course but the M50's pulled through. Haven't opened them up though since they were recently stolen :(

  • For $259 they are not worth the price but for $86 they are a good deal.

  • I'll wait for the Lady Gaga ones below to go on special thanks :P

It's funny, I was just reading about Beats today.

There's one born every minute, and these days you can identify them by their Beats headphones.

    • Not a Beats fan by any stretch of the imagination - but it does seem that that teardown was done with counterfeit headphones.

      • +1

Follow the links, there's another article done with genuine beats and there's little difference.

    • Shitting on Beats is a tired cliche, and this "teardown" is pretty much a parody of that. The "unnecessary" weight here is added by metal headband hinges, which undergo the maximum stresses and will be expected to click in and out of position 1000s of time within the life of the product. If the same mechanism were employed in a Sennheiser this journo would be jizzing all over them.

  • Are we dodging the quality of these headphones.
Spend 10 more and get the most basic bose headphones

    • +2

Oh don't get me started on bose, I can get very ver-bose on them!

  • Solo HDs have a bad rep. The newer Solo 2 though are – by most reports – very solid headphones, though a touch overpriced.

    • Solo 2 was alright in my opinion. Then again, I've gave them a try in JB HiFi in Sydney for like 10 minutes, so it's from my rather short experience with it. That said, it didn't sound like what people associates Beats with (and what my brother's older Beats sounded like). I've got negged so many times for saying that there can be a decent Beats model until I bring a relatively famous reviewer vouching for its quality. It's not "flat", but that doesn't necessarily make a headphone awful. Not going to say it's going to be everyone's favourite (preferences yaddi yadda), but I personally think looking past the bad rep associated with Beats and trying Solo 2 out wouldn't be a bad idea.

      • +2

Seriously just skip the whole beats area of headphones.
        Invest in some bose. Seriously.

        Beats are junk

        • k. I'd personally buy neither since I like something more "flat".
Seriously though, give Beats Solo 2 a try at least without bringing any prejudice, it will surprise you at least.

        • @AznMitch:

Given most of them a go as went though a phase of choosing headphones.

They turn on and work but the bang for buck is not feasible with them.

          Anyway each to their own

        • @FotherM: :Yeah, each to their own.

  • +2

Guys I bought beats headphones just to put around my neck and look cool, I swear all the girls couldn't get their hands off me

I had to take them off, for my own personal safety.

  • Before Ozbargains, I hardly knew anything on brands, build/sound quality etc when it came to headphones.

I wouldn't have even considered spending more then $30 and now…ive turned into a headphone snob wanting to spend five times more then that on my next set. What have I become!

    • Trust me, you don't wanna go down that pathway. I am planning on making a trip to Sydney and one of the things on my agenda is giving STAX SR-009 a try from minidisk.

      • Just had did a quick search as I had never heard of them. Good thing I was sitting down and I had just finished my last bite of food. There surely would've been an accident here otherwise.

        • Fun fact, you have to buy amps for them (and the ones that are recommended with them are at least half the price of the headphone).

        • @AznMitch:
I tried them in Japan without knowing the price, but daaaamn~ they sound so good!
Maybe give a try on Hifiman's HE1000, might save you some dough :p

        • @sheepy: I promised to myself that I will stop with Sennheiser HD600 and she's as good as she used to be 2 years ago. That said, if I get the chance to, I might give both a try. Though if I actually get a chance to grab a electrostatic headphone, I was thinking of going for ESP-950 by KOSS (because it's cheaper than the others).

        • @AznMitch:
If they have both for demo that'll be awesome!
I saw ESP-950 on sale occasionally (Thanks Giving, XMas, etc).
Given oz dollar so weak at the moment, nothing really worth to buy IMO.

        • @sheepy: They still haven't come down to the price line I'd love (following them on Camel x3). Though they are too expensive for me to commit without listening :(

        • @AznMitch: get a room you two!

    • There's still more room to grow. lol

Just wait until you are in the 4-figure section. Just a matter of time

      • Noooooooooo! Hope the money savvy in me prevails and am never tempted to go beyond 3 figures.

        • Sennheiser HD600 is amazing for listening to music indoor. It just requires an amp with reasonable spec. It'd be better to buy something expensive and use it for longer than to buy several cheap ones in the same timeframe.

    • Same. I'm thinking about headphones over $30. But right now I've got my eyes on a Koss PortaPro because it's small and portable. It's around $30 on ebay but who knows if it's a fake or not. And in minidisc it's $70 there and it's an Australian store, so that one's of course genuine. Can someone please tell me if the PortaPro on ebay is fake or real, I want to save money since I'm an Ozbargainer and all. I can't link it here because I think it's bad to do that.

      • Amazon's usually cheaper. I think it was around $30~40 USD? I've seen it go down to $25 USD.

  • $86 is a bit much for paper weight…

  • +2

That video upthread states that Beats owns 64% of the $100+ headphone market. 64%. Amazing, just think what it would be if they made a decent product.

    • yeah i heard that exact figure elsewhere too. Still find it hard to believe, considering how many makers there are. I never even heard of them 4 or 5 years ago.

I think the popular electrical brands would be equally as popular; like Sony and Philips and Pioneer, etc

Also the more dedicated headphone brands like Sennheiser and Bose that have been around forever, must also be right up there…

…64% seems like a figure a hipster came up with and other websites plagiarised it.

      • Probably, but then again, Beats, while I hate to admit it, made the whole "premium headphone industry" to expand like and be where it is now (where people are not put off by spending over $100 on a headphone).

While I am suspcious about the market share value, I think at least Beats made the idea of expensive headphones for outdoor purposes very popular. While I can give you list of well received headphones by audiophiles, like Grado SR60, Sennheiser HD600 (650, 700, 800), ATH-M50X, AKG Q701, STAX SR-009 and list goes on and on, how many percentage of people do you think have heard about those?

        • yeah, those are great headphones, but it is getting off topic. not many heard of those - even though they eat Beats for breakfast.

Just talking about market share here. I call BS on 64%. There is no way they are outselling Sony + Pioneer + Bose + Sennheiser combined. NO WAY. Only a fool and gullible Hipster would believe that.

        • @Son ofa Zombie: What I was implying was two things:

I actually didn't look at the data (I couldn't find what youtube video he was referring to), so I cannot be too certain but:

          1. As I've said, Beats have expanded the market by heaps, it's plausible that the data is from when they were dominating the expensive outdoor headphone market.

          2. Also, number of audiophiles compared to the general population is very small. The general population have less clues on what models are decent. Also, as I've said, the time when it have been taken is uncertain, therefore it's possible that they have not seen the reviews on Beats. It's possible that "the fools and gullible Hipsters" were more than the audiophiles.

As I said, I also believe that the market share data looks slightly dodgy. I'd agree as much as "they had a large market share". To say it's like 64%? I really need source on the data before I can believe it.

    • +1

Why would they? They are making bank selling cheap components at a premium price to complete suckers.
Their products are garbage but their marketing is brilliant.

  • I got the last pair in white from Fountain Gate, they told me that white should be that price everywhere
