Apple TV - $109 with Bonus $20 iTunes Gift Card @ Myer

640

Just bought another Apple TV at Myer Karrinyup (WA) and received a $50 iTunes GC as a bonus. Had to mention the offer to the staff for them to scan it in.
Although not cheap for the unit itself, it really puts the cost of the Apple TV at $59 $89 if you value the gift card.

Mod 18/8 2:30PM - Website previously showed $50 which was an error, now rectified to $20.

  • i wonder if OW or HN will price match?

    • +3

They never used to match these bonus deals. I have been rejected before.
The price is $109, there is no price reduction so does not comply with their price match policy.

But I guess you could try.

  • +6

It really puts the cost of the Apple TV at $69, because the card is often 20% off ($40 for a $50 card).

    • That's the way I saw it too. 15% off at Auspost right now, and 25% off happens now and then too. Could even consider opportunity cost…

  • +2

Better be quick with this one. If you add to cart it only gives you the $20 card … suspect its a typo on the Myer website. Get in store quick:

The bonus offer comes up as:

    APPLE $20 iTunes Gift Card
    Item code 153465940

Buy the device and refund it and keep the iTunes card, simpleZ.

    • +1 sir.

Watch netflix/youtube/other apple tv apps on your tv.

Does smart DNS work with Apple TV? I know Chromecast locks in Google DNS by default which prevents me from watching US Netflix.

        • +1

Yes it does. I have getflix and have setup their DNS on the apple TV and easily switch regions by restarting the Netflix app. Also got hulu running with no issues. Just gotta change the iTunes country to usa in settings to access showtime, hulu and some others. Very easy.

        • +1

For chromecast you can define static route rules in the router/modem if it supports it to view US netflix with getflix and other dsn services

Here is a quick guide on how to do this plus some other methods too.

      say you have a mac?

      A 30$ chromecast just as
      Effective

      • +1

That isn't wired only wireless so struggles with very large files over wireless depending on your range from the AP and size of the ripped file. Wireled kit is extra for the chrome cast.

      • +3

A Chromecast does not even compare to this.
I have both. The Apple TV can work stand alone with no other device. The Chromecast can not.

You may as well compare the Chromecast to a $5 HDMI cable ("Just as effective") if you are going to compare Apples with oranges.

      • Here is a library full of movies, please explain how to effectively play them on a TV via Chromecast.

        • Google "Plex". Then Google "I'm a donk"

        • @Gavman:

You're a donk, that's a shame. I'm fine with using my ATV thanks.

    • Thanks for the comments.
Sounds like it basically does the same as a chromecast, which i do not have.
Until i find a need for either of theese i think i will still pass.
Just the fact that it was cheap i was contemplating getting it.

  • But if u need it urgent. New model out next month may support App Store http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-tv/

    • +2

New model has been rumoured to be coming out next month for a few years now ;-)

    • It's Apple. there is always going to be a new model coming out.
It will be interesting to see what extra things the new one will do. One rumoured addition is a better remote.
My only wish for the current one was an old school audio out so I could hook it up to a non HDMI amp.
Still if you can grab the current one at a good price it does AirPlay and Netflix very well.

      • Not sure what you mean by "old school audio out", but, Apple TV has Optical audio out (I know that's not exactly "old school"). So, if your amp has Optical audio in, you don't need to use the HDMI audio at all.

        • That's the problem. Old amps don't have HDMI or optical. Would be nice to be able to hook up a red and white AV cable.

Can anyone confirm whether Netflix Aus allows you to pay with iTunes credit if you sign-up via Apple TV? I know Netflix USA does (or used to).
My thinking is that iTunes cards are often 20% off, and Netflix is ~$150 per year, so it's a saving of $30 per year. Effectively, if you're going to have Netflix anyway, the Apple TV pays for itself in a little over 2 years.
    Any thoughts?

    • +1

      Yes.

    • +1

Yes I do this, plus use discounted wish cards to buy them from woolies/big w

  • +1

hmmm do I need another apple TV…I guess it would be easier for netflix access in another room rather than using the XB1

  • +1

    Only $20 iTunes card now.

  • I got it for 69 in Catch of the Day Deal on Ozbargain! :)

  • Can you control these with an Android phone?
