WOuld this work with optus rewards ?

From the Amex Connect website's Ts & Cs:
"Purchases made via Australia Post, and discount tickets purchased at Optus and Bupa are excluded."

      • Can't you buy gift cards and then use the gift cards to pay for the optus reward tickets? I don't see gift cards being excluded from the deal.

        • You don't buy the Hoyts tickets directly through Hoyts with Optus. You can only pay with Credit card or Paypal.
Alternatively you could invite a lot of friends and offer to get their cash off them to buy their popcorn and drinks for them…

  • Anyone going to try to book an overseas hotel through Hilton?

I was going to jump on this till I saw the "hotels in Australia" part

      • exactly same to me. I wanna book in Dubai

  • Thanks OP.

  • Seeing noteworthy AMEX deals on OZB from time to time, is it worth getting amex card just for the benefits? Which card would you guys recommend.

    • +2

Depends on whether you travel frequently or not.

There are AMEX cards with a $0 annual fee, also there are some that have quite a large annual fee but come with a substantial amount of benefits.

      See: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

I signed up for the AMEX velocity platinum. x2 free lounge passes, 110,000 points (enough for a business class international flight or economy return from say SYD -> LAX) and also a free domestic return flight.

However, the fee for that one is $349 so does not suit everyone.

      • +2

4 free lounge passes when you include the 2 visits you get to the amex international lounge :)

        • Sorry going OT here but how do you get these 2 visits to the AMEX international lounge? I was just overseas in the US and very keen to redeem lounge passes, especially for a long layover at LAX - please don't tell me I just didn't do the proper research!

        • +2

@Bargain Hunter 007: sorry mate, to clarify, you have 2 lounge visits per year to the amex international lounge located in T1 Sydney international terminal

      • Gee thats alright. Do you have to commit to keep the card longer than one year? Also is it very difficult to obtain approval?

        • You do not have to keep the card for more than one year. I received the points within weeks, as well as the lounge passes and free domestic flight.

      • Theres another good option here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198715

You don't get the 110,000 points (which are admittedly very nice) nor the lounge visits, but you do get a free yearly return flight still and the ongoing fees are lower at $199. Using the above link the first year is free, and still includes the return flight. Optionally if you spend $200 at Priceline before the years out you'll get a bundle of points, but you aren't obliged to do so if you don't want.

I ended up getting the Platinum Edge. The 110,000 points was awfully tempting but for ongoing point claims the Edge earns 3 points at supermarkets and 2 points at petrol stations, where the Velocity Platinum above is geared more at people who eat out earning 3 points at restaurants and typically 1 point on more day to day expenses. There's also that first year fee that the other offer doesn't have.

Anyway both are good deals and it depends what you're after. If you just wanted to take advantage of these AMEX offers I'd go a free card, but I decided to grab the Edge for some actual spending as I anticipate I'll earn enough velocity points to grab a few domestic flights a year and the one return trip guaranteed more than covers the $199 annual fee.

      • $349 is okay for first year if you use the card in every way possible and can use most AMEX offer. From 2nd year, those used offers will not be available to you, so the reward points need to be able to offset the fee on its own.

        • The flight and lounge pass (on Velocity Platinum) is per a year, so you'd still get those the second year. It's only the 110,000 points that is a one off.

      • Does 3rd party issued amex card get the same promotions/benefits as Amex issued card?Im thinking of going with either qantas discovery or velocity card as it got $0 annual fee.

        • It's hit and miss. I have a bank issued Amex and it can redeem maybe half the offers, where others wont work. Certainly I've benefitted from them in the past though on my bank issued card.

I was excited for a minute thinking I could use it to book our overseas holiday until I read the terms :(

  • Is there a way to use this to buy tickets for the star wars movie in Dec? Gift cards arent eligible..

    • Buy a gift card at the counter?

      • Wouldnt the transaction will appear as a giftcard then it wont work…?

        • I dont think they really care what the transaction line items really are, AMEX gets involved at the end when Hoyts decides to bill you for amount X. You choose Amex, then amex sees X is greater than 20 and then gives you a $10 credit. Thats my understanding of the process, based on my previous experience…

  • Wonder if it only applies to Hoyts movie tickets or does it apply to snacks/drinks from the candy bar?

    • Their snacks and drinks are overpriced. A cone of choc ice cream $ 5, Popcorn + Coke Combo $ 10, Lipton Tea or Bottled Water $ 4-5. A quick visit to the local milk bar would be cheaper. Heck, I used to smuggle wine and beer disguised in soft drink bottles into the cinema.

      • I usually take wine in, disguised as… wine. They don't look in bags

    • +6

What ozbargainer would EVER spend a cent at the cinema candy bar ??

  • Thanks OP

  • Regarding this post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/205697#comment-2952647
Reason I picked up an AMEX.

Would I be right in thinking, I infact would have needed SEVEN AMEX cards to do this properly, not just 1?
Are a lot of the rewards "one time only" ? :/

  • Where do you get these manual links???

    • +1

From the browser once you are on that page

  • Can you buy hoyts gift cards at hoyts? There aren't that many movies that i want to watch right now. Or cinema cash? So i might watch something else at a later date cheaper

    • It worked when it had Event Cinema promo not sure about Hoyts though.

  • Plus remember 10% cashback until the end of the month at CashRewards - http://www.cashrewards.com.au/coupons/big-rewards-increase-f… - would combine nicely with this offer.
