should have been these prices when they first came out… 1k for an android phone was just crazy

    • +16

What do you mean "1k for an Android?" People stupidly pay $1k+ for a shitty apple product, so I guess Samsung wanted a piece from those people.
The hardware in Samsung's phones cost more than the Apple phones' hardware.

      • +11

Doesn't mean he's wrong. They are both priced crazy. Look at the price on a Lenovo phone for comparison. Apple and samsung could easily shave $300 off the price. Heck, probably $500.

At least on the apple (and I hate them) you're paying for OS development. Samsung still haven't gotten rid of their clunker of a UI after 6 generations..

        • +1

What's wrong with touchwiz exactly(apart from it's a little bit of a resource hog)? The latest version is pretty good, although with a launcher, you barely see it at all.

          @ozhunter:

It seems I'm always waiting for it to catch up. Even just at turning the screen on! Mind you, I've no idea what its like on an S6. I've no interest in any phone without a memory card slot.

        • @justtoreply:
My wife's S5 seems OK. What phone is yours?

        • @justtoreply: I have an S6, I have no problems with its touchwiz. I quite like it actually. They give you 3GB of RAM, which is enough. I haven't experienced in lags, though that might change as it gets older.

      • +2

"wanted a piece from those people" those people as in those willing to spend money on phone or those that are on iOS? looking at the way you phase "shitty apple projects" I can assume that you're very anti apple..

most people are willing to pay 1000$ for apple because of the OS and the brand. The fact that Samsung is running android where there are many other competitors other there that charge 300-500$ means you would be paying 500$ for the brand and hardware. The drop of price shows that people are obviously not willing to do that.

        • The drop of price shows that people are obviously not willing to do that.

If Apple ever licensed iOS out, they wouldn't nearly sell as many iphones as they do.

        • +1

@ozhunter: it was the mistake they made back in the 80's with their apple macs.. :) which lead to the microsoft monopoly … not saying it will happen again.. things are a little different now.. but you never know i guess… history does repeat itself.

        • Out of interest, what other phones with specs comparable to S6 sell for 300-500? I am yet to find one.

        • +1

@ozhunter: But they don't, because they know a flood of cheaply made chinese phones with shitty performance would hurt their brand and iOS in general.

        • +1

@djc926: there would be a few with similar specs but not to the same build quality … if your happy with plastic fantastic and close to non existent after sales support, then i'm sure there are ChinaDroids not far off those specs for around 300-400 :)

        • @jjcf:

True, but mainly because they'd lose a lot of money. They don't have to license it to everyone.

Android pricing model is different to Apple's. With Apple, the price never drops for a whole 12 months until the next model releases. If you are close to September, there's never any reason to buy the current model. Always better to wait.

Android uses the model where price cuts are made periodically throughout the year, so that if someone doesn't want to pay full price, they can buy in later for cheaper. The price cuts are not a sign of no one wanting to buy it. It's part of its natural cycle. Early in its life, no price cuts. Later, good bargains.

The other difference to note is that Apple doesn't do sales. It's always full price, or very close to it. Apple controls pricing very tightly like Bose. Android phones are allowed to go on special. Special =/= lack of demand, same way as Doritos/Smiths chips being discounted at coles every other week doesn't mean they are unable to sell Smiths chips.

      • you need to understand what you are paying for.

Is it really the hardware or the user experience? It is like you buy a painting. is the paper and ink what you are paying for?

I use both iPhone and Samsung note. I have no problem with both. But I just prefer iOS for my own taste.

    • +9

There's no value for me personally in a $1000 phone. However an Android $1000 phone is MUCH better than a $1200 Apple phone

      • My contract ends in 1.5 months. The Samsung note 5 is $55/month (incl. Optus discounts) for me, but I agree with what you say. I am not sure if I want to stick with my Asus Zenfone 2 for 2 more years or just get the Note 5. THe $1000 phone just seems so pointless nowadays considering that a budget smartphone like the Zenfone 2 can do everything I need it to.

        • Who buys Asus Zenfone 2 on a contract?

        • @kkmenon1156:

I didn't. I bought it outright and I usually keep the same phone for 2-2.5 years.

      • +2

I'm an Android guy but I agree with him.
Apple keeps updating the iOS software time and time again for old hardware. Also their support is second to none with faults.

Paying 1k for an Android phone is crazy, and I've paid 800 for one multiple times. Enough is enough. Samsung after sales support us mediocre at best and software updates poor. Plus the S6 gimped some old features.

Damn thing should have launched at this price to begin with.

        • I quite like the Samsung support, I only ever speak to fb Samsung, they even sent me a new free battery for my Samsung galaxy s3 when it died :)

        • When the OS is made by the same people who make the hardware, you get to enjoy that benefit. When the OS is licensed by different manufacturer's, it's on them to implement the software update and roll it out.

If you want your OS updated quickly buy a Nexus product. And it won't cost $1000 either.

Plus the S6 gimped some old features.

I presume you're referring to the lack of removable battery and microSD. Samsung got panned for years for using a cheap plastic back cover that doesn't feel premium. They changed that and used a unibody aluminium case covered in glass. The downside of this more premium design is that you can no longer remove the back cover.

But if cheap plastic is what people complained about, then the new design is what people want. They joined HTC and LG in moving to metal designs. Apple people are perfectly happy going without those features after all.

        • @lostn:

They joined HTC and LG in moving to metal designs.

Just wanted to point some mistakes out, Samsung moved to glass not metal (unless you're talking about the frame), and LG is still using plastic with removable battery.

That said, moving to either glass or metal doesn't mean they had to get rid of micro sd expansion, look at Sony's glass and HTC's metal, they both have micro sd expansion available.
I don't know the exact reason why they got rid of both micro sd and removable battery, my guess is that they wanna be as Apple like as possible (to get iPhone customers). I don't own an iPhone and don't want one, but it's pretty clear that they are moving towards the Apple way, just look at that bottom of the s6.

        • Don't update to often, or the software will out grow your device. My ipad went from brisk to laggy after major updates.

      • However an Android $1000 phone is MUCH better than a $1200 Apple phone

That is subjective. You may personally feel that a $1,000 Android phone is better than a new iPhone, and it might have more RAM, a better processor etc, but no-one could objectively say that it is a better phone.

    • Agree. too many good android options for a fraction of the price. That's why samsung's sales are plummeting

    • +3

$500+ for ANY phone is crazy. Phones are weak as piss.

      • I don't understand your logic. So are you suggesting that you assess the value of mobile phones based on their durability?

        • +1

Yeah, why pay more than $15 for a phone :)

        • @ilikeradiohead: stunning…

        • Yes, but I mainly meant in terms of computing power. They're garbage.

MediaTek's new chipsets are around the mark this year and the phones with them are cheap as chips. People who spend close to $1k on a new phone are clinically insane.

        • He is talking about computing performance.

I asked an online rep about an hour ago, sale ends 27th August.

    • thks for checking

  • S6 128gb $898 with free shipping at mobileciti https://www.mobileciti.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s6-128gb-gold-v…

    • +1

wait for TA code to get close to $800

    • Kogan is currently (just) beating that.

      http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=galaxy+s6+p…

I don't see the point in 128GB, I've been waiting for a decent deal on 64GB and am tempted by this… but wondering if it's going to drop further very soon. My Galaxy S3 is getting a little long in the tooth…

Still, no Cycanogenmod for the S6 yet, and I don't want to have to deal with all the crap that Samsung preinstalls, so I guess I can wait.

      • Mobileciti is Australian stock with 2 years warranty

        • Kogan is Aussie stock and warranty, but I don't know the duration.

  • Bought S6 edge 32gb off gumtree last night for $600 telstra stock sealed box, pretty impressed with SS since I threw my plastic S3 away 3 years ago

    • +1

good thing you missed the S4 then… got the wife that after she broke her LG G2 and the build quality is terrible .. worse than LG (which was ok) .. probably on par with some cheap chinaDroids .. lol you didnt miss anything by jumping to S6 lol ..

      • +3

I still have my Samsung S4 after 3.5 years. It is an excellent phone. Tell your wife to stop throwing it around and treat it the same way she treats her precious jewels.
I don't know why people think phones made out of metal make the experience any better. It means nothing to me and just adds more cost.

        • i have a HTC One M7 … so i just expected more from Samsung… my friends S4 was exactly the same all the paint peeled off and ended up looking terrible. Internally you cant fault it .. externally for a flagship phone you need a bit more than what sammy was feeding its users for a good 3-4 years.

    So 5 Transactions of 175 = $875 with $25 off and then $25 off on $150 Price Match Officeworks = $750 . Galaxy 6Edge =$750 Good Deal. :)

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194595

    • What?!

      • -2

        Do the Maths mate..!!

        • How'd you come up with 5 transactions?! You cant just buy this on installments…!

        • -4

@Spackbace: Try 5 Different Cards/Cash payments mate. Divide them in 5 and get $25 off on $150 each time..lol…Funny right ?

        • @ozyboy:

But Officeworks won't beat that… They'll take 5% off the advertised price, which is $896 for the Edge, so a price beat will get it for $851.20.

And the $25 off minimum $150 spend only applies once per item, regardless of how you want to pay.

        • +2

@ozyboy: you cant do that with that voucher.

  • Much better phones available for that price ahem..G4..mm

    • Where would be a good place to buy the G4 H815T for cheap?

  • Bought the S6 Edge 64GB only a couple of weeks ago from Harvey Norman for $1097. Lucky I have price protection on my card and I can claim my $200 back.

    • What card are you using? I tried to claim cash back for price protection for something else but it had to be printed on a catalogue for it to be accepted. I feel that I need a new card just for price protection =/

      • coles mastercard, never have anything rejected.

      • Go Mastercard

  • Sorry for a dumb question..

Would OW beat the $25-off price? I thought they would only beat the public-available price (the $25 off is only for new subscribers i.e. targeted) ?

I would be very happy to be proved wrong though.

    • I don't think they beat prices after coupons are applied.

    • They don't but depends on the salesperson. They might include it.

  • got the s6 32gb from HN, 740 odd, great phone. went from s4 to this, battery life isn't crash hot tho

    • all the phones with QHD type resolutions suffer in battery life, when you look at the battery usage is it mainly system and screen that's draining it? out of curiosity .. :)

      • yeah under battery, Screen, google services, android system and Android OS, highest use and facebook if left open

      • S6's QHD display actually uses less power than the S5's FHD display

  • -5

$800 for a device that runs touchwhiz. lol

    • You can pay more than that. Some would say the same about IOS. You heard of choice.

    • +1

$1000+ for a device that forces users to use Apple-approved software. An OS that inhibits creativity and freedom. Not to mention that it is mainly for Mums and Dads and the computer illiterate.
I should also mention that Apple's business practices are horrendous, so that's $1000 for supporting a company that violates human rights and treats its employees like 2nd class citizens.

      Pat yourself on the back.

      • -1

You been watching too much ABC by the sounds of it.

        • It's the only TV broadcaster I watch. What's wrong with that?

        • @tendollar: lol good guess.

        • +1

          @Robster33:

To be honest, I rarely ever watch TV. The only times I turn on the tele is to stream a movie/tv show or watch the news. Channel 7/9/10 is filled with idiotic news people that talk about celebrities, renovation competitions, cooking shows and bad Australian programs.

Morning television makes me cringe, because they all sound like bogans to me and think they're qualified to talk about important issues.

You probably have other assumptions so here is what I believe. I don't vote Liberal or Labor. I voted green for the first time in my state election and 70% of the vote went to the Liberal Party. As a young person, I am done with politics.

        • +1

@tendollar: I'm the same as you in many ways, I never watch news and agree with your views on TV, just be cautious of how bitter you get towards things. 😊

I'm older than you and ethnic and traveled around alot, politics anywhere is rubbish but at least we have a choice here and sometimes we have to vote for crap or crapper.. Also think about it when your purchasing all companies have a dark side in manufacturing, just be aware the cheaper something is the more likely its being made in an unethical way … Enjoy being young leave the being bitter for the older folks hehehehe…

        • @scud70:

          Will do, sir.

      • Some call it inhibiting freedom, Apple calls it protecting the user experience.

Officially android does the same thing. Try searching for an app that blocks ads or YouTube ads on the play store and see if you find anything…

And if you are worried about human rights abuses and using a computer or mobile of any sort you are automatically a hypocrite, Foxconn don't only make parts for the iPhone.
