Not applicable to existing card holders or if closed one within last 12 months.
This rules out just about all of us

    • +2

I thought so, hence put that in the description.

    • +1

      Well, their loss

      • +1

At the cost of Qantas points to banks, it could be!

    • +1

ANZ card or any card closed?

      • +1

Not available in conjunction with other offers, packages or promotions, or when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Frequent Flyer, ANZ Frequent Flyer Gold, ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card within the previous twelve months.

    • Damn, ok. I just cancelled my ANZ QF Platinum card - still to wait for 12 months to come….

    • +2

True. Not that great offer especially the $7500 spend

  • What is 75k points worth?

    • +4

36K points is PER-SYD return economy.
75K points is $500 woolies gift card

      • +4

        so essentially a 6.66% discount on a $7500 spend.

safer/easier sticking with the 5% off gift cards.

        • +11

Discount? Just buy something you were gonna buy anyway and it's just simply a "free" $500.
          Even then, 6.66% > 5%

Don't have anything to buy? Some ideas:
          - Fully refundable Premium Economy/Business Class/First Class fare (will probably have to be First Class to get it in one hit)
          - Fully refundable hotel stays
          - WISH Gift Cards
          - Coles Myer Gift Cards
          - Prepaid Visa/Mastercards
          - Electricity/Water/Gas/Council Bills

        • +10

even better: stack with the 5% gift cards - buy them with the ANZ card to get to your $7500 minimum spend…

        • @illumination:
Anyone have any experience with refunding airfares? Any charges at all?

How long should you wait to do the refund? Will it work if done straight after the points have been awarded? Will the points be debited because of the refund?

Just seems a little risky. Want to confirm that someone has been successful it doing this.

        • @illumination: I'm pretty sure you can use a credit card to load prepaid Visa/master cards, the rest are excellent options. I tried to do a prepaid card today and it didn't work.

        • @squeeb:

I personally haven't tried it before but it is explicitly stated as to whether it is partially refundable or fully refundable. If it is partially refundable, it is usually determined by a percentage or a fixed dollar cost amounting to $100+.

Don't blame you for feeling apprehensive though…

          @Oats5:

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to though. I'm imagining it would be a case of going to Woolies, grabbing a Prepaid Mastercard, recharging it with $50 (for example), and paying Woolies $55.95 (I think the card issuing fee is $5.95?). I guess another roundabout way you could do it is to buy a WISH GC first (for 5% off), then use the WISH GC to pay for the Prepaid Mastercard.

From Woolies POV, it would simply be you paying them $55.95.
From your POV, you're paying Woolies $53.15 ($55.95 - 5%) for $50 "Cash" in the form of a Prepaid Mastercard to help you build up your $7500 spend.

I imagine the process of putting the $50 on the Prepaid Mastercard is done on the machine and there is no link that can be made between the type of payment method used and the purchase, other than a staff member simply saying "you cannot use Gift Cards to make this purchase".

        • @squeeb:

I've just made a fully refundable hotel booking. I guess I'll have to wait for the bonus QFF points to be awarded before applying for a refund.

        • @sween64:
Thanks for letting us know. Good luck. Hope it goes smoothly. Would be interested in the result.

Staying at the Palazzo Versace for a couple of weeks should be fun!

        • @team teri:

          Hi Team Teri,

Is it like we can buy 5% gift cards from any other site other than Groupon.
I havent seen gift cards from Groupon last month ... maybe I missed it
(as we have only 3 months to spend 7.5K)
          Thanks in advance.

52K points is also a return flight to Honolulu

        • What are the taxes on a return trip to Honolulu?

        • Hi,
when I checked it seems that flights are 52K for one way. How did you find them for return? thanks.

        • @ashling: Probably Classic Award rather than normal Economy.

        • @coxymla: Great thanks :)

    • +2

72000 upgrade to business class MEL-LA…

      • +4

Not that I should be advertising this (more availability for me), but 65,000 points is a one way business class fare from Adelaide, Melbourne or Sydney to Hong Kong flying Cathay Pacific - with only $110 in taxes. Easily booked via the QF website as a classic award.

    • You can book return Jetstar flight to Tokyo/Osaka. That's pretty a good value.

  • Not to mention Black needs to have a Yearly income of some $80k p.a I thought too,

    • Yeah, need gross annual income of $75000.

      • +11

        nothing gross about that….

        • +4

          that's what she said!

      • +15

quickly start ozbargain tread about how people manage to survive on under 75K/year…

        • Get a lot of credit cards with no annual fee, free points and 0% interest on balance transfer

        • +10

@cash8: by simply not going to ozbargain might also help. I spend more than what I save from ozbargain. Haha.

        • +1

          @googleyahoo69:

Should focus on better than half price deals then.

  • Cheers OP ;)

Great card. Great that you get access to Sydney Airport AMEX lounge too.

    • +2

That lounge is terrible, the food is terrible, BUT the only good thing is the internet is very fast!

      • +1

I found the food pretty decent… and it was much better overall than what I had expected. The seating area is meh, but the food was not bad.
And I have been to pretty damn good lounges before.

        • The waffle was terrible!

Maybe coz I was there at 6am.

        • Your Singaporean is showing illumination.

      • Is it really no good? I have been meaning to visit for a while, but usually goto the Qantas lounge instead

    • I Think this lonnge my busness class upgrade only got pass my uni subject. sorry if rest of group had to wait out side.

    • Doesn't this apply to all the top tier credit cards with the domestic banks that have AMEX?

    • Is it single entry? I got stung in Bali airport was told 1 card admits you and a guest, got there and said only card holder, Luckly i gave my wife my black visa card before going in and said she got one too and they never checked the name :)

Where is this written? going to sydney and need to know if need to get a second card…

      I cant see it on

  • +1

1.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases with your ANZ Frequent Flyer Black American Express® card (uncapped)

So the $7500 one has to spend will give an extra 11250 points?

    • +1

Yes, note AMEX so maybe a fee if you do spend it in local AUSTRALIAN retailers because they like to charge fees for an even playing field.

  • +1

Just cancelled my black card last week. Was within 2 days of getting the $425 yearly charge. I'll join up in 12 months time. In the meanwhile I'm looking for another fee free card with lots of bonus points to join up for a year. Any thoughts?

    • +1

Velocity Amex - use one of the ref links on the wiki to get 110,000 bonus points.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…

      • +2

I believe that Velocity Platinum with the 110,000 points is $350 a year. Might still be worth it taking into account the included domestic return flight

        • +4

Yes and I've heard from quite a few ppl that the domestic flight is easy to redeem (they all got their preferred dates and destinations with no probs)

I just used my bonus points to book Perth to Paris return :) Stoked!

    • +1

When can you cancel the card without penalty?

      • @ 11.9999999 months

        • But that would be leaving it to the last minute millisecond.

    • When can you cancel the card to avoid the annual fee? But still get the points of course?

      • It should be as early as when your points are transferred to your Qantas account and although I cancelled my card 2 days before the annual fee date, I could have kept it about a month longer and just paid a small pro rata difference.

  • Rental Car insurance? I need a car just for Rental Car Insurance. Was told Citi signature is the only one that gives you that option

  • +1

This would be perfect for me had i not seen ridiculous annual fee's after 12 monthes

    • +1

Just cancel before the first year fee comes up and move on to the next deal.

  • Gah! I just got approved for the 50k points yesterday! Will call monday to see if can get thr increase

    • I tried ringing but they wouldn't change my points or give me any kind of extra points.
I guess this is a case of "you snooze you win"

      • Yeah i rang aswell today - no love from ANZ for the increase.

Going to try again with my welcome letter in hand - hopefully muster something up!

  • Just closed my account in July…

  • I think i closed mine in october last year :( Has anyone tried anyway to see if the points come through?

    • Give them a call. They were helpful when I asked.

  • +1

If the $7.5k spend in 3 months is too much you could also go for the Platinum version - 50k points and requires a $2.5k spend.

    • +3

The Platinum version is min $5k spend

      • Ah yes.. My bad. Thanks for picking that up!

  • +1

Anyone know when this offer expires? Can't find it anywhere!

    • Just says offer can be withdrawn at any time:

"This is a limited time only offer which may be withdrawn or changed at any time without notice."

      • Yeah I saw that. Was hoping there would be a date like there usually is.

  • +1

Does ANZ every waive the fee for this card?

    • +1

There are websites that track the ability and rate of renewals being waved with successful tactics reported. I remember looking it up in July and the success rate was low to non existent for the black ANZ card.

Still good deal for a year.

      • +1

        what is the website?

    • +2

If you have a home loan with ANZ they waive the fee for a credit card. you can get the annual fee waived for the black. I certainly have.

      • +1

They milk you with their package fee. Was reading a report recent, about the big 4s making constant record profit out of us Aussies like a legalised "Ponzi scheme".

        • +1

Dude the package fee they charge you is nothing on what they make off the spread on the interest component.

        • +1
    • Only heard of them denying to wave from other posts for this card.

  • How long do you need to have it for to earn the bonus points?

    • Usually 6-8 weeks after you pay your bill. So about 3 months at the minimum.

    • Took over 4 months for me with the 50k points. Don't expect a short turn around. It will be summer before u see a point.

    • Thanks guys.

Don't want to get hit with the annual fee.

  • I already have the ANZ rewards black, wonder if they'll approve me if I apply for this card as I think they are essentially the same cards but under different rewards programs…. Anyone know?

    • +1

They treat them separately. I couldn't get the QFF card last promo due to having that within the last 12 months, so they gave me the ANZ rewards card, with the ANZ points instead

    • +1

Yes. I was in the same position on the previous offer. Just got my 50k points recently.

    • Thanks, I applied… will wait and see!

    • Me too. Lets see…

      • +1

I got approved after the assessment team called me to tell me that I had to cancel my rewards card in order to get this one which I didn't mind since I was going to cancel it at the end of the year anyway to avoid the annual fee. But the card closure team suggested to lower my credit limit instead of cancelling it which works for me too. So just waiting for the QFF card in the mail now!

        • Why wouldn't up just cancel t?

        • +1

@sween64: Because it never hurts to have an additional AMEX that you can use for all those statement credit offers.

        • @illumination: I thought that may be the case. But it could be worth cancelling it so that in 13 months time you can apply for it again and receive bonus QFF points.

  • +3

wow! 75K is HUGE! I'm not eligible (got the last bonus points card) but the $7500 spend is huge

You can definitely prepay for a lot of life things to hit the spend.
-woolworths gift cards / prepaid debit cards
-prepay strata/water/electricity/gas/council rates/health insurance/car insurance for the next 12 months (that way you're not spending just to spend)

Just keep in mind that if you have a mortgage and an offset account attached (which you should do, if you don't already) then you should factor in the lost interest savings for any bulk/pre-pay purchase you may do.

e.g. i couldnt hit 7.5K without prepaying for things. At say $5000 prepaid that's 5000 x 4.5% =$225 lost interest saving. Round down to $200.

Plus, you'd probably be paying for things that have a CC fee attached (that you wouldn't ordinarily pay by CC) so maybe another $50 in fees?

Obviously those figures are just samples and only making the point so yáll consider hidden additional expenses.

Buying full-refundable purchases may work, but 1. I'd be scared I wouldn't get a refund 2. Does that really work? When I refund a normal purchase, my points get deducted?

    • +1

Good point on the opportunity cost for prepaying, but to say 5000 x 4.5% =$225 is only true if you pay for something 12mo in advance or buy a gift card that takes you 12mo to spend.

  • Still waiting to hear back regarding my application made two weeks ago (under the offer that just expired). Just a warning to people that it may take some time before you actually get a decision. And no contact whatsoever from their end too- it was only as a result of my calls to them after the 7 business days lapsed that I found they required further info to progress the application. Disappointed so far. Two weeks to just hear back regarding an application is not acceptable these days when you normally know within 60 secs to a couple of business days.

    • I applied but got the "has to be referred" message. A few hours later I got the approval confirmation by email, so it was all automated unless someone was working after midnight on Saturday.

      • Lucky you… I'm still waiting. Hopefully will hear back tomorrow (16 days tomorrow, sigh)

  • Hubby might actually qualify for this but the thought of changing all of our direct debits scares me a bit. Is there an easy way to do this?
