  • I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S. It has a 1440p resolution and a very long battery life.

What are the advantages of using a kindle as opposed to using my Samsung tablet's e-book app?

The backlight is gentler on your eyes, especially at night. The battery life is extremely long, I hear its now 4 weeks long if you use it everyday for an hour. The screen only uses power when it refreshes. The screen is also similar to that of a book's text in colour and texture.

      • Not disagreeing with the kindle being a superior reading device but , I use the aldiko app which makes the writing white on a black background . I find that far less straining on my eyes when reading at night on a normal tablet . I'd buy a kindle but the cost of a 9/10' one is more than the chinese Cube tablet I use .

        • A black background is very good idea! I read on Sony ereader during the day and in the evening on my phone or tablet with Kindle app, or Moon reader set to black background and shade of green, which I find even easier, on my eyes, then white text. Had to try few different shades of green to find the right one, though, and it was worth it. Maybe one sunny day I will treat myself with a Paperwhite, too.

I have the NextGen and it's great for reading anywhere: in full sun, in bed at night with the room lights on or off. It's much better than trying to read from my ipad.

The combination of refresh rate and the LED screen shining directly into your eyes makes focusing for a long period on reading more difficult, and it makes it more difficult to get to sleep after reading. The static nature of the screen and "front lit" display (shining onto the screen rather than into your eyes) mean that it is more comfortable to read on - and is more like reading a book than a computer screen.

    • the lack of glare was enough to make me question my sanity of trying to read on a phone/tablet screen. I did all the dark background/light text and even beige background (like old paper) and black text and fiddled with font settings.

  • Great, but cannot click and collect the Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Gen as they're sold out.

    • Thanks for the info, updated :)

  • Awesome, thanks! Was going to grab a 3rd Gen with the eBay voucher tomorrow, but this works out about $7 cheaper.

    • after delivery charge?

      • That's with C&C. I think eBay is around $160 with C&C or add $7.95 shipping.

  • Thanks, treated messlelf to a 300ppi udate….

  • Lol, I misread the title as PaperWeight…pretty expensive for $153 if that was the case

  • Thanks, just ordered the 3rd Gen. Click and collect plenty of stock.

Does it have angry birds in HD white?

"For once Dick Smith doesn't put Kindles in their exclusions list :)"

When I looked at the terms and conditions it was in the exclusion list, but my orders went through so I'm happy!

  • Wouldn't it be wiser to buy this tomorrow after 10am with the ebay deal?

Kindle Paperwhite 3rd Gen should be $139.62 after the 20% coupon and 2.5% cashrewards cashback.

The one you linked (Next Gen) is the 2nd Gen there.
The 3rd gen is this one so it will be $159.20 after 20% off :)

      • Thanks. Placed an order at Dicksmith.

  • Had been waiting for a deal, thanks for sharing!

  • mine bricked itself last week, had to send it via UPS for replacement…

  • do these things exist in A4 format (or even A3 ? ) all my pdfs are designed to be read in those formats

  • I've got a 2nd gen Kindle, it's utterly indispensable when i'm travelling overseas without an internet connection on buses, in hotels etc. - But now with a full internet connection i just don't use it anymore - My attention span kills me, One thing i've found useful is send2kindle extension for sending articles to it - More incentive to read an article with it on there, but as for novels, i just can't get past a chapter or three anymore.
