The i7 looks great until you see the horrible resolution. My two years old phone has higher resolution than that. Besides that really good deal.

    • They don't even publish it on i7 page. 1366 x 768 ?

    • +1

Not this "my phone has better res (on a screen a fraction of the size)" again bullshit that comes with every advert lately…

      • Why bullshit? Am i wrong with what i say? Are you happy with 1366x768?

        • +2

The thing is your phone only has what? 6 inch of screen max? So it's whole different ball game when it comes to cost

        • +2

serious answer: yes for me. what's wrong with 1366x768? or perhaps its because I don't game on laptop/ don't do any graphic design related task

        • +5

          @paradoxez:

Neither do i, it simply can't show enough.

        • +4

          @paradoxez:

You cant even do work on it. Not well, anyway. If windows/office was more cleverly designed to use toolbars on the side rather than top of the screen, maybe it would be enough. That freakin ribbon menu uses too much real estate when you only have 768 lines to play with.

        • +5

I'm just referring to the same annoying comments that get posted on EVERY laptop that has an average screen res… someone always mentions their mobile phone despite the fact that the comparison is completely stupid.

        • +1

          Agreed!

        • @justtoreply: There's ya problem - you run windows and office.

        • @devnull73:

Believe it or not, I'm ok with that.
Linux was a pain. Mac I do not like.
In fact, the only thing I've ever been disappointed in is that I can't run mythtv on windows (I want automated advert cutting). Other than that, someone makes the perfect software for each one of my needs.

  • Wait for ze Intel skylake mobile processors and prices will faaaaaaaaaaaaaall.
Desktop skylake has flooded the market already.

Wish this bloody laptop had a 1080p screen.

  • Are Toshiba Laptops considered good quality laptops?

I saw a few stocked at DJs, but wasn't sure how they compare to Dell/Asus, etc.

    • +2

They are position in the market as "better" quality to something like an Acer. However compared to other brands like Asus or Lenovo they nor here or there in my opinion

    • +3

I (personally) think they had a rough patch in recent years but are now good enough to be competitive again, however I think they are only worth buying in the low end of the price range. This being an example (good).

    • +5

They've been in the game longer than Dell and Asus combined. My old Toshiba is running smoothly (for an old laptop) after 7 years. Just treat it well, don't let a teenage girl use it and everything will be fine.

      • But what if you are a teenage girl?

        • +26

          Then asl?

        • +1

          @tendollar:

In that case, it's just AL.

        • @justtoreply:
These days boys can be girls, so I have to be sure.

    • +1

No difference, they're all made by the same odm's, like Quanta and Wistron.
I'd say nowadays the after sales services like warranty are more important, but I think most of the manufacturers are crap in this area.

    • +1

Toshiba have an alright track record but that one really horrible experience was enough to kind of put me off.

I had nothing but good experiences with Toshiba UNTIL I bought a 2013 Satellite L50 with rubbish build quality (from JB HiFi). The screen somehow spontaneously cracked while I was out of the room (LCD panels are not covered by Warranty, apparently). The hinge is kinda dodgy and the outtake fan grille on the side started falling apart after a year.

      Reviews for my laptop: http://www.productreview.com.au/p/toshiba-satellite-l50.html

      • The screen somehow spontaneously cracked

lol I'm guessing you don't live with children or animals?

        • Haha no, it's obviously very difficult to prove something like this so I understand why it wouldn't be covered. I just leave it sitting on a cooling pad on my desk all day

  • +1

Be careful with this seller last times I buy from them takes 2 weeks to get my keyboard, and don't even bother to packages correctly

  • +6

    10/100 Ethernet? Seriously?

  • I don't think I can resist this HP.

Sure it doesn't have a touchscreen, and the screen resolution will make me cry, but in my opinion you can't go half assed on this.

You either take what you can get, or you pay a premium price for a premium product. If you go in the middle then you're just stuck with more expensive shit.

The only premium options in the laptop world imho are between macbook and surface. And they are all above $1500 and would get outdated just as quickly as this.

And regardless of that, if I bought this laptop for 3x less and threw it out 3x quicker, then I would still break even in terms of cost-per-year.

    • Asus Yoga 2 Pro is still a fantastic premium competitor.

    • btw guys i came to my senses and didn't buy anything. I forgot to factor in that I would enjoy the laptop 3x less as well. So maybe I'll just wait for a good premium laptop.

  • Where's the cheapest place to get Windows 8.1 Pro keys?
    There's a link on reddit?

  • WELP I'm not VIP. Guess I might try tomorrow.

    • hmmmm…..

Preview sale on now, open to the general public 10:00am 25/8

      Mate….

      • I quickly glanced through the other thread and read someone say "not targeted".
And I thought general public meant like the regular non-ozbargain plebs :< .
tbh I should be vip, i buy random shit off ebay all the time damnit!

    Maximum Memory: 4GB : FAIL

My 3 year old Dell Vostro laptop supports 16GB.

    UPDATE:
Looks like you can put 8GB in it, despite what the specs say. Probably unsupported though.

    • It's says 4gb max but there's 2 dims. That means each dim max is 4gb = 8gb max ram supported. It's poorly worded.

  • +1

I got one of these for my brother on the weekend, great laptop, but you can't change the hdd or add ram easy. I voided the warranty and got it open but it was not fun. then trying to install win 7 was painful.
I upped it from 4gb to 8gb, and swapped to ssd.

    • +1

painful as in, you gotta remove the keyboard and unhook things just to get to the ram? :/

    • Is this the correct maintenance manual?

      http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04653884

Not the worst I've seen but still more laborious than it should be.

    • Well if it's the same as my HP 250 then it's dead easy.

      Remove batter

Undo 1 screw and remove RAM cover. Upgrade from 4G to 8G if you want by putting in another 4G module.

Undo 2 more screws to access HDD. Remove and replace by SSD if you want.

Fancy a laptop to match your stolen iPhone?

  • +1

Anyone have any idea of the battery life on the HP?

    • About the worst of any brand available.

  • HP warranty? No thanks.

  • Comes with only 3-cell battery.

  • im looking for a tablet/notebook byod small n lightweight. anything you recommend? any deals? dont need to be high end specs. just so can use microsoft office and apps. thanks

  • -7

Toshiba laptops are the worst rubbish around apart from Acer.

Also Futu_Online is Shopping Express = worst customer service.

Check forum here and feedback on eBay, they have ALLEGEDLY been selling stolen iPhones. Do your own research.

    EDIT

Friend actually have a Toshiba-Satellite-L50-A, less than 2 years old and battery is already totally DEAD, and it is internal, meaning you have to remove the whole base of it to replace it. A replacement is minimum 75 bucks on eBay, who knows what Toshiba will fleece you for.

    • -1

And I suppose Toshiba IS HP as well?

      • +1

And I suppose you are one the dumb **** who only read headlines.

        • -2

          That would be JV….

  • +3

The pixels on that screen will look like Minecraft

  • An i5 under $500. Good find OP

  • +1

no removing keyboard (that would have been easier), 10 screws underneath, and the 20 hidden plastic clips on all edges, some prying and stressed plastic (bent and chipped), this laptop is not made to be opened. Also Windows was a pain to install due to the new bios type, had to put it into legacy mode to get it to work.

  • You could use something like this as a good TV PC. Play movies, run emulators etc. I'm currently using a 1st gen i3 laptop for the same job which works fine but does struggle with emulation for obvious reasons.

Otherwise the bulk+low res screen kind of makes these types of computers not very appealing.

    Good price regardless.

  • Can anyone comment on whether they have purchased one of these as yet? Just wondering what your initial thoughts are and how quick/slow click and collect might be should I buy one

  • I have never used Futu online before. Is this local stock and GST included in the price? Just wondering whether can get GST back when taking it overseas soon.
