  • I have this machine and bought this last year during the 20% ebay sale. Great machine

  • Awesome, thanks!

Been waiting for this deal since I missed it last time.

Shame they don't stock it in black!

  • Thats a very good price

    • oops, wrong thread

  • anymore thoughts about this machine?
I'm not sure if Breville is reputable..

    • if you want me 2c, the machine has a reasonable grinder but you'll need to play around with it to get the right pressure setting. It's a bit of a learning curve when you first start to use it.

I find that I have to alter the grind size/amount of coffee if I change brand of beans as well. Have a look on Coffeesnob. I hardly ever use the frother so I can't comment on that.

Breville is reputable, but I find it silly that you have to call them to replace the water filter tablet. I haven't bothered

      • @ catear, we've always had a Brita water filter jug in the fridge so we use that water for the Barista as well.
I don't bother with tablets or filter pads for the Barista and the only thing I've done so far is use white vinegar to descale every 4-5 months.

    • This is a highly rated machine for the price on many websites and also Amazon.
I've had one since the Xmas sales and it's made over a dozen cappuccinos every single day since for the family.

Anyone in Perth try the coffee bean selections from http://2brothersfoods.com/coffee delivered to your door for $3.50 delivery fee.

p.s. I did pay extra for a 2 yr warranty. No big deal because with my card reward points and the Xmas sale I paid just over $400 all up.

      • Somehow I doubt those guys roast the beans themselves. So far Sweet Yara Coffee has been my favourite place to get beans. The 'Brazil RFA Cerrado Fazenda Recanto' is amazing.

  • -7

    $518 = 518 X $1 (7/11) Coffee

For those who have 2 to 3 coffee a week, it would take 3.3 year + coffee bean $$$ for start saving… It would be good for those who have at least 3 coffees a day.

    • +4

You compare this with 7/11 coffee … lol …. Why don't you compare it with instant coffee. It may take your whole life.

      • That's what I thought, but I have changed my view after I'd tried it.

    • what about time and petrol to drive to nearest 7/11. In fact, if you want to save money, buy a large can of international roast at $11/500g.

    • +1

They don't call it $1 coffee for nothing. Actually after having a sip of it once I felt rather ripped off! This Coffee machine produces much nicer coffee than any of the 7/11 machines can produce.

Next thing you'll tell me my BES920+Grinder+Freshly roasted coffee beans will take half a decade for me to start seeing any savings? You are the one missing out on the experience.

  • Does the BES870 have twin thermoblocks?

    I think I'd prefer the Sunbeam 6910 + grinder at $438.40
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Sunbeam-Espresso-Machine-Grin…

    • twin thermoblocks are overrated

      • +1

You are kidding right? When I make my coffee I pull my shot while frothing the milk.

I have an EM7000 from when HN was clearing them. I will never go back to a single thermoblock. The only reason I would change is going to a double boiler!

        • Pulling a shot takes only 20 - 30 secs. I dont mind waiting for that to finish.

        • @carlJack:

Yep and if you are making coffee for lots of people…

Not to mention the silly knob you turn and wait for it to back flush. Each to their own I guess.

Twin thermoblock or not, Do you think the BES720 is superior to the 6910? I am not sure which grinder they have bundled in to the 6910. At home I use the BCG820 grinder with my EM7000 so the grinder may be the limiting factor of the above bundle.

        • @jimmej: Yes.. I suppose it matters when you are making coffee for lot of people. I am not sure there is BES720 model. but 518$ for BES870 is a very good deal. I have used PU6910 before. Its an excellent machine. Both are good. The grinder with 6910 is EM0440 which is a plastic version of EM0480.

        • @carlJack:

Guys you both seem like you know what you are talking about. So with this (without going to a dual boiler), i will be able to steam milk and pull a shot at the same time? Full auto for shot amounts etc?

EDIT: Oh so this is a super auto, where the grinder puts the grind straight into the tamper?

        • @kulprit: Nope, there is a knob to switch between espresso shot and steam wand.

This isn't a super auto, with the BES870 you grind the beans into the portafilter, tamp them using the tamper (which comes out, is magnetically attached to the machine) and then attach the portafilter back to the machine to make the coffee.

        • @kulprit: No this is just a manual espresso machine with inbuilt burr grinder. No you wont be able to steam milk and pull shot at the same time. This is not dual boiler. If you want dual boiler then go for PU6910 and quality grinder like Breville BCG820 smart grinder pro.

        • @nickolanda:

          Cheers guys,

Looking at both the ones on this page, they both seem to be full auto rather than semi. Do i actually have control of the amount of water through each time, or only setting a preset to each auto button?

And the Sunbeam isn't a dual boiler either? Just a dual thermoblock?

Also as advised above, the main one from this deal is on sale at Target for $499
          http://www.target.com.au/p/breville-bes87-barista-express-es…

  • I think target have this for $499 but not online.
As for the quality, I have the BES860 and its amazing! My mate got 5 years out of his while making 4-6 coffee's a day. It eventually got a blockage in the steam pump but we cleared it and its still running fine.

    • I looked into this - no machines in any stores country wide.

It's just a 'clearance' price on their website.

  • Anyone can recommend me a grinder only? <$150

      • Which one out of those 2 do you recommend?

        • Both are good unless you are very pedantic about the consistency of the grind. EM0480 is very popular. Breville BCG600SIL usually comes on special at Myers for 129$. Personally I would spend more and get Breville BCG820 smart ginder pro which sometimes will be on special for 199$ at Myers.

        • @carlJack:

Ah alright, in that case ill just wait for the Myer special. Thanks.

        • @michaellee117:
I had the Sunbeam EM0440 that comes with the 6910 espresso machine and it's pretty average. Absolutely worth waiting for one of the regular $199 Breville Smartgrinder sales. Even combined with a cheap espresso machine (sub $200) it makes a consistently good coffee.

    • is your post related to this machine? If so you don't need a separate grinder.

      • -1

Nop. I already have a machine and just need a grinder.

  • Have been looking at upgrading from our Nespresso for a while, although thought we'd be looking at around $1000.

What would I be missing out on by going for this one. I know I want I dual boiler to do milk and espresso at the same time. Also want a quality burr grinder.

    • BES920 + bcg820(when it goes on sale). Nudge that little bit more $ to get you there. Been making great coffee with it for over a year. I make about 5 cups a day.

      • With 20% off now is this about as cheap as a 920 gets?

Also, doesn't the 920 have a built in grinder?

        • I got mine as a package for $1389 with the separate BCG820 grinder. So I guess with this deal approx 1080 + 199, its almost the same deal as I got it for. In saying that once they are not on sale they are ridiculously pricey combo & I would probably spend to the next level… Italian machines like Vibiemme.

        • @pinoy:

It's the BES980 that has the built in grinder.

I bought a client a Nespresso Delonghi Latissima pod machine (supposed to be one of the better ones) and it makes an ok coffee, but the texture of the milk is poor. Even an entry level espresso machine can do do better once you get the hang of texturing milk (just kiss the top surface of the milk with the wand).

        • @pinoy: The eBay good guys page says it includes a smart grinder, which I assume to be the 820. So $1080 including the grinder sells me I think.

        • @wfdTamar:
I did say I have a BES920 + a separate Smart Grinder. The BES980 is over $2k, out of kuprit's $1000 target. I would rather spend good money for a proper Italian machine than getting a BES980.

        • @pinoy: So you think for $1080 inlcuding the grinder you can't do much better. It know its $500 more than the 870, but i think that is probably worth the extra. Wish they had black rather than silver, but can't have everything.

        • @kulprit:

Can you paste a link to that item you are referring to? The BES920 that they have on the EBAY GG doesn't have included a smart grinder.

        • @pinoy: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Breville-BES920-The-Dual-Boiler-S…

In the main part right above the green buy it now button. Have called them as well.

        • @kulprit:

The BES870 is a capable machine. If you are just going to make 1-2 cups at a time its fine. I have friends that have it and it can produce comparable nice coffee. I went for the BES920 cos I wanted to simultaneously do the milk.

        • @kulprit:

          You are right…
          That's a bargain I reckon.

you can always do the cashback 4% or 2.5% mentioned on ozb.

        • +1

          @pinoy:

I picked mine up from the GG and it included the smart grinder as well! Cost $1079.20 and also $26.98 cashrewards cashback!

So $1052.22 total! Amazing price for this machine and grinder

        • @kulprit:
          That's a steal. If I didn't already have a machine I would grab one.

        • @bender: anything else I need to buy on top? Just one of the things that you hit onto to get the puck of coffee out?

        • @bender:

Do you have the Knock Box? What do you think of it? I am just hitting mine into the rubbish bin at the moment.

        • @lecheapo:
Yeah we have a Knock Box but we hardly use it. I prefer to use the kitchen bin like you do.
There's nothing gross about that because the puck is washed under the tap and dried between each shot anyway.
I bang the puck on the top edge of the bin after I lift the bin's lid off.

        • @bender: Thanks guys all purchased. Got the knock bin as well. Our real bin (and a swing lid not a flip) is under the sink and would be annoying.

$1120 for the Breville BES920, 820 Smart Grinder Pro included, and a Breville Knock Bin. Pretty happy, although a scary price. Hoping with a lot of practice a much better coffee than our Nespresso Latisima.

The nespresso was a great introduction to the world of coffee at home better than espresso. Got 6 good years out of it so far, and it still going strong really, but not up to our getting quickly snobbier standards.

        • @wfdTamar:
Sorry, I meant to reply to kulprit not pinoy

Kulprit. That's a good combo. Might take a while to get the hang of driving it. Next step is roasting you're own beans. Have a look at behmor roaster (lots of other ways, but it is dead easy). Green beans are $9-12 per kg and keep for ages, so you can bulk buy.

        • @kulprit: In my above post, it was meant to say coffee at home better than instant, not espresso :)
