Asus UX501JW - Ultra Slim "Gaming" Notebook $1417.20 Delivered @ Dick Smith eBay

CTREAT20

There's a number of really good Laptop deals around with the Ebay offers - but this one is also really good as well if you want a true Gaming Ultrabook (2GB NVidia 960GTX).

Specs include:
Glare 15.6' NTSC:45% N/A Touch Ultra Slim 200nits LED Back-lit FHD 1920x1080 16:9
Intel(R), Core(TM), i7-4720HQ Processor, 2.6 GHz (6M Cache, up to 3.6 GHz)
8GB RAM
256GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M (N16P-GX)
Windows(R), 8.1

As much as the Zenbook UX303/305 compares with the Macbook Air, the UX501 compares with the Macbook Pro 15.4" and definitely has better specs for a much lower price point. It uses the older 4000 series CPU - but there is very little difference (<5%) performance difference with the newer 5000 series.

    "gaming"

    • +1

Interesting. What's your definition of "gaming" then?

      • +7

Full Tilt! Pinball at a solid 120FPS with DX11, SSAO and full scene anti-aliasing.

        • Sometimes I read that as anti-analing; I've been watching too much Q&A.

        • Solitaire!

    • Might not high end of the spectrum but 960 for 1080p is good so wouldn't knock the "gaming" too much.

  • Does it game well without over-heating? I know I've read there's not enough ventilation in some of these thin ones.

    • I did some research on it before in the last deal and couldnt find anything about it overheating (trust me, that was one of the first things on my mind too given I've had bad experiences with my HP Envy 17 overheating). Thats not to say it doesnt but the 960m is suppose to be pretty good for heat compared to previous generations.

I would be cautious to the combination of "Ultra-Slim" and "Gaming". I got one of them ages ago and they are literally like furnaces.

    • When a laptop is thin there's only one way for it to effectively cool itself down since the fans only do a half arsed job — radiate the heat towards the user via the keyboard and palmrest.

The underside of most gaming laptops would also pretty much cook your gonads, if you happen to have one.

      • +6

        Only one gonad?

      • Yeah I think you've pretty much summed it up - the thickness is the key factor in this scenario.

Which would probably mean an ultra thin gaming laptop is probably the worst idea possible.

To be honest I think gaming laptop itself is already a pretty bad idea.

P.S. Thank you very much my pair of balls are intact.

The 4720HQ does tend to get really hot when doing CPU intensive tasks like video encoding in handbrake. You can just set windows to not use %100 CPU though so it's not much of a hassle.

    Great deal.

  • 250 gb hdd or ssd?

    • +1

SSD. They dont make Hard drives in 250GB for a while now..

      • thought so but just making sure because the product description says hdd

        • I think its because of the website template that DSE uses - storage automatically is called "HDD" even though technically that is out of date since half the laptops now come with either SSD or hybrid drives

  • Good price. Good GPU

  • Why is gaming in quotations? It is a gaming laptop; it has a 960M. Sure, it's not powerful compared to regular GTX cards, but it can still run current-gen games at modest resolution with playable FPS, and older games on max resolution with playable FPS.
Slim laptops do generally have trouble with heat, so expect loud-ass fan noise and the odd crash due to overheating.

    • Gaming is in quotations because I knew some people may object to the use of the word in this laptop since its not like an ROG, ALienware, MSI or the Asus gaming laptop series (my predictions came true). However as you can see.. it does have the specs required to be gaming. Mind you however, the closest comparison for a slimline gaming laptop with the same specs is the Razer Blade laptops which are twice this price at JB HiFi for last year's model.

I'm using the smaller UX303LB at the moment and have played a few of different later games out of it. Has not yet overheated. Granted, it is a bit of a difference between a GF940 and a GF960 in heat, but this unit is bigger and has bigger fans etc to suck it out.

I was deciding pretty hard between this unit and the UX303 last time but ended up with the UX303 because it was meant to replace my MBA and I needed something smaller for portability reasons. Otherwise it would have been a no brainer to get this model (UX501) for me anyway.

  • WHY AM I BROKE

GODDAMN IT. I WANT A NEW LAPTOP

  • Purchased! Hope I don't regret it. Reviews seem to be quite good so far.

  • Do you know if the ssd in this laptop is the same PCIe SSD as the one in the US 512gb ssd model?

  • $1373.225 after cashrewards too. Damn

  • +1

the Dell inspiron deal is a lot more compelling…

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208560

$951 for same CPU / ram, / ssd and slighlty less GFX for ~ 400 less.
Granted no FHD , but FHD on a 14" isnt really my preference anyhow!

im travelling back internationally next week, and can likely claim the tax back also!

    • Also use Cashrewards for an additional 2% ($19.02) off.

BTW the Dell has a 1 Tb hdd, and no SSD, but it looks like it'd be possible to add a SSD in the Cd drive.

    Out of stock……..

  • Oh dear, a couple people on whirlpool are saying the 1080p screen isn't very good at all.

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2434076

I hope I don't hate it… I figured as https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/ZenBook_Pro_UX501/specificati… states ONLY IPS panels that I'd be okay. I hope it is ips and not as terrible as they make it out to be.

I know it'll be better than what I came from, but, man I was really looking forward to a 1080p version of the 4K display that got relatively good reviews.

    • +1

Apprently the panel is TN. I was reading the spec website wrong. They have THREE panels, one of them doesnt state IPS or TN, i assume that means it is TN and that's whats on this one. The 1080p ips panel is most likely the matte non-touch panel.

I have contacted dicksmith to try and cancel my order. It's such a shame, if the screen was just IPS it would have been perfect but my eyes can't take any more TN.

      • that's so annoying. i'm really glad this went out of stock before i could order one. thanks for letting us know.

    • Did you happen to find out if this was a TN panel or an LED screen?

      • +1

I never got to see it for myself, I tried to find one at my local store but they only sold the 'cheap' laptops. There is no mention of IPS anywhere so it would be TN. Aint nobody got time for TN panels at that price range. Why would anyone want a premium build laptop with a washed out screen?
