the spec link you provided is for Lumia 635 not 625.

    this should be the one

    • thanks. link updated.

  • bloody hell, only just bought a used one from ebay last week for $107, and thought that was a good deal.

  • The 630 was $45 a year ago!

    • that's 5 more than this phone.

      • 99 - 45 = ?

        630 is a fine phone.

        • 630 - 625 = _

    • the 630 is rubbish. The 625 is a half decent budget phone. Have 2 of em in the family, might grab a couple more given the price, hate android.

  • Specs are pretty low (512mb ram and 5mp rear camera) even for $100, any thoughts on this being OK for a mother in law's first smartphone?

This would be a brilliant smartphone.

      I previously had a Lumia 520, then a 625 and a 930 which I currently use.

The Lumia 635 was the most comfortable phone to hold single handedly as it had curved sides and the 4.7" screen was just right. It's got a removable back case and came with a spare case (I used to have the orange). I used it daily and loved it - paid $225 unlocked from DSE.

It comes with 2 years warranty (as with all Microsoft Mobiles) and 8GB internal memory so it will get the Windows 10 upgrade.

I still prefer the feel of it to my Lumia 930 (which cost $534), but no doubt the screen is gorgeous on the 930 and has a much better rear camera.

EDIT: It also has physical keys which are much better than on-screen buttons IMO.

App availability will probably be the worst feature of any Windows phone, though that may not mean much for a first timer :p

CPU should suffice for most functions inc. media & web browsing. App load times may be a bit slow on 512mb RAM, and multitasking won't be smooth (though that's also true on 1GB Windows phones)

Even the available apps often are worse than the counterparts on the Android or iOS.

Depends on how long you want her to be your mother in law for ;) If you are an android family stick with a cheap android phone as it will be much easier talking her through the process of posting her instagram photos ;)

That's a good point, eventually I'd become default tech support and it'd be better to at least be able to help

  • I think it depends how keen one want to see mother in law. I reckon with the phone camera 0.3MP front and 5MP back is sufficient.

  • How is this good price for a 4g phone? I bought a Alcatel ages ago that even had support for band 28 aka 4gx for $49. And for the $49 it came with 3 months netflix. It cost $1.50 to unlock though. Been plenty of phones at half this price with 4g, some even have 4gx now.

The thing this has going for it is the ips screen, probably better than most budget phones because most get crap tft ones. Mind you on a 4.7 inch screen that resolution will be awful, so I don't know how much better it is. Another advantage it also supports 850/900 3g, so good for Telstra and Optus coverage. Another downside is 512mb ram, even on a Windows phone you'd want at least 1gb for wp10. Even the 532 that regularly comes on sale for <$50 has 1gb of ram.

At this price point the LG Leon looks a bit better on paper imo.

I think they'd put a butchered version for 512MB WPs, since that was what MS developer said about Windows 10 Mobile on 520 (which was their most popular model I believe). That said, yeah, 1GB will be the new minimum for Windows 10 Mobile, better to grab something that has 1GB RAM or more imo.

except Android requires a minimum of 2 gigs ram to run properly.

Better off getting higher specs cheaper prices from overseas better branded chinese androids ding-a-lings like Xiaomi, Lenovo or Meizu.

Older Win 8 phone are rubbish at 512 megs ram. The 625 has a lousy resolution screen. It's not even HD which is a minimum these days.

This is a $49 phone selling at $99.
