  • Apparently they have given out 10 tickets for 10 TVs to the people in line at carrum downs store

  • My advice stay away from the liverpool area it will sell out.

    • And ST marys area as well. Already about 50 in the queue.

  • Now 40 pays to come early.:)

  • Ok, within 1 minute, 3 people in line. :)

  • Just arrived at my local…. More than 15 already in the line.

  • Looks like it's going to be a sell out folks…. I will let you know of my opinion when I unbox and try it out at home this arvo. :)

  • People will miss out here now 70+

  • Just got one! Only 3 TV's available in my store. The girl at the counter insisted I had to get one from the rear of the store as opposed to lining straight up at the counter.

  • +1

Three left in Carnegie. No one waiting.

  • How is the quality?

  • Missed out there were only 5 at st marys store.

    • Please tell me this TV is a sh*t one so I don't feel bad for missing out:)

  • Only 5 here in Coomera. Got here7:50 and had 20 people before us. Sold out before we even got in to the store.

  • There were 4 at Frankston store and there was a stupid rush thy should have handed out tickets to first in line

  • Yay got one! No mention of 100/120hz motion anywhere on the box. Got a feeling that there is no interpolation despite being a 120hz panel.

Will post up with impressions soon.

  • 5 at mac center as well. snapped up the second one. will report back in the afternoon once i assemble it.

  • Aldi Shepparton. 5. About 20th in line so missed out moroopna had 3. Sold out. Misses this deal

  • Update only 5 available to the public looks like Aldi staff kept 15 for themselves was already a dust up mad rush into the store. Wow lucky people waited over an hour and came away empty handed and pushed in and got one. BLOODBATH!!!!!!

  • Anyone know where there are any on the west side of Brisbane?

*edit - just read a few posts and it sounds like shopping day in Moscow in 1986. Think I'll not bother!

  • All the ones at Eden Rise, Berwick are gone! I missed out by one spot :(

  • Any updates on quality

  • Moonee ponds all gone

  • Anyone had luck ?

  • +20

I experienced the most appauling decorum ever in history this morning, lined up since 730….. there was at least 50people outside lined up behind me.

This is my first and my last time i will ever put myself in this situation again….

830 on the dot the doors opened .. it was a (profanity) stampeed i tell you.

Ive never seen anything like it, to the point people were pushing each other and some lady fell over.

People ran to the back of the store where supposedly the TVs were, but Aldi staff didnt take them out, they started to wheel the TVs out on a pallet and would you believe that everyone started running to the back dock.

Aldi staff had to stop everyone and say its restricted area and that if they didnt stop pushing they were not going to sell them.

By that time i rekon 60 seconds from the doors opening to the time of being at the back dock doors there was at least 50 people lined up pushing each other… it go to the point people started abusing each other saying I WAS HERE FIRST MATE….. almost a punch up happened at one point….

I was about 6 from the line outside, inside it was a different story i didnt expect people to react this way. I was probabaly about 10 from the line in the store…

I should HOW MANY TVS DO YOU HAVE… she goes 10.

    LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Good luck chuck… i missed out by one position.

But thats not the point the point is people dont give a (profanity), Aldi should have handled and have the responsibility to manage this better. I am putting in an official complaint it to Aldi head office and i have have pictures and video footage of the shambles this morning. Will be submitting my story to A Current Affair also.

How about this Aldi, why dont you have a first in best dressed policy and give people tickets outside that are lined up first numbers.

Then when you go inside if you want a TV and your ticket number is read out you get it, if you miss out due to low stock level then you miss out fairly.

    Mod: Inappropriate

I am utterly (profanity) disgraced…. this was at Fairfield West ALDI btw.

    • At quakers Hills we were given ticket in line so we knew we will get it and there wasn't any rush due to the ticket. I must admit that stock was pretty low only 10.

    • I know how you feel. Two weeks ago My wife was punched in the arm by a guy that pushed in. This was for the juke box. There was only 2. She ended up getting one. ALL Aldi need to have a numbering system like someone mentioned earlier.

    • I had a very similar experience at the Eden Rise ALDI in Victoria, I was even subjected to verbal abuse.

    • +3

      Please post the video :)

  • Liverpool area sold out completely….. maybe all south west syd sold out no harm in calling stores around your area could get lucky….

    • calling stores

      You've got their phone number?

  • +2

Wasn't the concensus from reviews that these tv's are mediocre at best?

  • +1

How about not having a 2 page spread in your catalogue only to stock 5 items at the majority of your stores. who has the number for ACC?. Their business model must be working some how. Missed out by an arm length. I'm certainly not one to run in a store like a child.

  • Feel so sorry for the people waiting behind us very disappointed with Aldi and there practices they knew they had a hot ticket item there should of had security at the door in place and only let two people go in at a time a complete joke. Only me my old man and the couple behind us obtained one the rest pushed in and grab one each.

  • Got the last one in aldi Arndell Park. Had to fight off some clown who was trying to start a fight and rip it off my girlfriend.

  • +7

    Some early impressions.

My worries turned out to all be true.

    1) No 100/120hz at all. What you input is what you get.

    2) No scaling. When hooked up to a PC I can only get 1080p and it's overscanned to hell. Cuts off about 10% of the image I would think.

    3) Input lag. It's a lot. It's a joke. It's unusable for gaming.

    4) Burn in. Just from doing the initial setup I can still see a faint outline of where the DTV setup was.

It is big and bright though. At this rate I will use it for about a week before returning it I think. I really hope that some firware updates come out that address the flaws with this TV.

    • +1

Sounds great. I'll bet it works well as a PC monitor then… /sarcasm

Are you particularly surprised though? You got what you paid for.

    • It's size and UHD resolution are it's main selling points. At this price, it's expected to lack a lot of other features.

Did you check if the current firmware is the latest one?

      • Horrible nput lag isn't a lack of a feature.

It's unusable out of the box on any inputs including TV.

I'll be trying the firmware update now.

    • +1

      2) No scaling. When hooked up to a PC I can only get 1080p and it's overscanned to hell. Cuts off about 10% of the image I would think.

Not correct. Under "Smart Hub" you get a "Picture" option that can be set to "Just Scan".

      • I don't see an option to scan? But I do see an option to turn on motion control, which does work but causes a bit of stuttering.

So it does have interpolation. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction to find it, but I'm surprised it's hidden in that menu and not in the main menu/settings.

        • Yeah I can't see the scan option. I know on old bauhn tv's it was in the service menu, so if we can get access to it it will open it up a bit I think.

I'm pretty happy with the picture quality with netflix and fetch which is 99% of what I'll do with the tv. Just want access to the service menu to do a proper calibration of the display before deciding to keep it or returnit.

        • @stratbargain:

What about the input lag issue? Mine is really bad, could be up to half a second. I'm updating the firware as I type this and hopefully it does the trick.

My burn in has completely gone and hasn't come back even when I had a static image up for a few minutes.

EDIT: Firmware update significantly reduced input lag on DTV and possibly slightly reduced it on the HDMI inputs (but it's still really noticeable on HDMI).

I now also see the option for 'Just Scan' under the aspect ratio - and it works. No more setting a custom resolution.

        • +1

          @c0balt:

Input lag is there but not too bad (not great though), but I don't do too much gaming on it these days (that's for the PC).

Pretty happy with the netflix quality though and the motion smoothing isn't complete garbage either which I was expecting.

I have yet to try 4K though (I'm not sure I have any 4K compatible devices to be honest.).

Turning the colour down and the backlight down and it's looking pretty good. I'm sure it's not up there with similar Sony/LG/Samsung TV's, but it's also $2,800 cheaper :)

I'll setup the Eye-One later today if I get time and calibrate the display and get some proper readings on greyscale levels, contrast etc.

        • @c0balt:
I did update the firmware where to see just scan

        • @binodnepal:

Smart hub - Picture settings (down the bottom) - Aspect ratio - Just scan.

        • @c0balt:
I can only see auto, 4:3, 16:9,zoom1, zoom2 and panorama, thanks

        • +1

          @binodnepal:

I had that also before I updated the firmware.

You will only see that option on the HDMI inputs though, so make sure you are on the correct source input that you want to set to 'just scale'.

  • +2

If this 65" fails in a few years time you can use it as a table!

  • +1

Amazed at the queues and near fights over a) a television and b) a TV that there's no suggestion is worth even the $1200

Just as cobalt above has shown… Kind of sad really

    • +1

I've worked through some of the issues that I wrote in the first post.

Bit of a shame I can't edit it to reflect the findings.

Basically it needs the firmware update on the Bauhn website before trying to even use it - http://www.bauhn.com.au/65inch-uhd-tv-software-update.html

    • +2

ALDI should be expecting a lot of people to be lining up at each store, and they should have implemented a proper system rather than relying on people to, as you said, fight to be one of the lucky few to purchase them. This is appalling.

  • +3

I was at my local Aldi this morning just to do groceries…so many people lined up outside i didnt know why. When the doors opened people sprinted in and fell over and then sprinted to the front of the store and snatched the TVs. From that reaction I was thinking they must be free….people are so strange.

    • all these pushing/shouting/abusing for a cheap (not so cheap) TV…….

      • +1

        and not so good..

        • I have a Bauhn 42"……almost ready to be throw out

from turning on to switching channels(not remote problem as I tried universal), takes about 2~3 minutes

  • +2

Testing atm great buy really very happy with it no problems hooking it up to wifi no issues picked it up, smart menu very easy super responsive no problem with the remote and keyboard. Super clear resolution so far. Tested ps4 no problems. 4k test very good no lag no ghosting on ps4 exceeded above my expectations. Won't be return it very happy with it.

    • +1

How did you test the 4K ?

      • Must be netflix PS4.

        • PS4 can't output 4k.

I've got 1080p working with no over/underscan using HDMI from my PC, but haven't got 4K working (GPU specs say its 2.0 so the card can output 4k @ 60hz, but I don't think my cable is 2.0).

I'll get onto a HDMI 2.0 cable and test it then.

The dude saying this TV has no lag on the HDMI inputs must be bonkers. It's really noticeable - tested with a PC and xbox 360.

  • Has anyone picked one up…. any feedback on your first impressions?

    • Read previous comments.

  • +1

Does it even upscale to 4K?

    • -2

No. Having said that, I'm yet to see upscaling that works well.

      • +2

It must upscale to display anything less than UHD (it's not a 4k display) on the whole display. So saying it doesn't upscale is incorrect.

        • You're confusing conversion with upscaling. Without upscaling, if you plug-in a VGA source into a 1080p monitor, you'll still get a VGA image. There's plenty of popular information available on this if you're interested in finding out more about this.

More to the point, according to this thread on Whirlpool there's been a confirmation from Aldi that this TV does not upscale.

        • +1

          @elektron:
Nope. Unless it displays say a 1920x1080 image in the middle of the screen using only 1920x1080 pixels of the screen then it upscales.

An LCD has finite pixels so they must be lit based on the source. I'd there aren't enough in the source they are created when scaling.

How good a job it does is another question. It has to create pixel information from nothing when displaying a lower resolution image on a higher resolution screen so how well this does this can be variable. Proper scalers can do a better job.

Conversion and scaling are the same thing.

        • -1

          @Shonky:
          They are not.

Conversion is passive and re-resizes the picture just by adding white noise, which is very simple to achieve.

Active upscaling actually applies interpolation algorithms to assign 'meaningful' information to pixels, which wasn't there in the source. Yes, the quality of these algorithms varies but that's not the point.

        • @elektron:
Bollocks. Provide a single reference to displaying a source with a different resolution to the screen using white noise or it being passive in any way.

        • -1

          @Shonky:
Not passive in the sense that there's no processing involved - just not actively enhancing the quality of the source.

  • +6

Ok let me give you a better run down this is my honest opinion of what I'm seeing as I'm testing the unit.

No I'm not techy when it comes tech tv stuff this review is based on a normal person or a family that will buy this for this price point so guys don't expect miracles in upscale or performance. It's a $1199 machine.

Note I don't work or have any affiliation to Aldi nor Bauhn what so ever nor paid for this review.

Please Note that I brought this TV to do everything but not pc screening off it so lets get that out of the way first have not tested that feature as yet but if you want to know let me know.

I've been playing around with it all afternoon this is my conclusion. I think this is the model that they finally got right and is their benchmark to work off heading forward.

Build quality 7 out of 10 thin but not as thin as other brands. Heat generated very little which was suprising it's been on since this morning.

Installing unit and getting started very easy 10 min I was up and running channels scanned, wifi, no problems find it very easy so far.

PS4 tried tested picked up run a ps4 game through honestly I don't see any issues screen wise 7 out of 10

Tv channels same I don't see any issues screen wise 7 out of 10

Smart tv functions easy to navigate no issues getting around a novice can get around this no problems you tube easy no issues there surfing the web not a problem quality I don't see any issues 7 out of 10

4k - video content I tested footage off my galaxy note 4 film footage at 4k play off the tv looks great off the tv no issues there 7.5 out of 10.

Sound - don't expect much from this is a let down but easy sorted when you install surround sound but as is no good 3 out of 10

Remote and keyboard - no issues to report responsive even from 5 meters away

Performance it's fine I don't see any issues there 7 out of 10

I think what everyone wants to know is the reliability of Brahn Tv the jury is out on that but next 60 days I going to thrash the crap out of this machine to see if it can keep up so I keep you posted if it survives the 60 days.

So far so good but for $1199 Bauhn is getting better with every release.

Note spoke to my Aldi insider depending on how they sell this weekend will determine whether they will do another run at it 6 month's for the 55 inch and 65 inch again of course at a different price point because rumor has it they are thinking a 70 inch model price my guess price $1499 judging from what I witness today this is now on the cards for next year.

If they do I would buy again but this time be early first in line once doors open run to the tv and stake your claim I was just lucky enough to grab one.

  • The question to ask yourself is this can you justify in paying an extra 2k for a brand one or this type of Tv. My answer is that 2k is still in my pocket. :)

    • +1

Not 2k no, but if I was buying I think I could justify the extra $1300 (after negotiations) for that 65" Samsung Curved UHD that was at JBHIFI a few weeks ago. Price will only continue to drop as well. None of Aldi's tech products seem to have been worthwhile at all, made the mistake buying the $99 tablet and it was returned the same day, it was horrible. Don't think I will bother with any more of their junk.

      • IMHO, curved TVs are overrated - unless you're sitting in the dead-centre sweet spot they're actually worse than flat screens and not suitable for families or having friends over.

I definitely wouldn't pay more for a Samsung if I can get 2 Bauhns for the same price with enough change left for a few Chromecasts.

Budget tablets have mostly been bad all around (at least from 2-3 years ago), regardless of the manufacturer.

I did have a bad experience with a Crane bluetooth HRM from Aldi, which I returned after a month, no questions asked.

    • +4

Nah not for brand name. Just to avoid getting up early and lining up with a bunch of unpleasant people who have no respect for queues. Yep justified.

  • +3

One more thing Blu-ray and regular DVD played can't complain very happy looks great from meters away. The sweet spot is 3 meters away. The further away the better.

hooked up a surround sound set up now that's better.

Media player no sweat quality differs off course of what u d/l quality but plays well

Netflix great throughout 8 out of 10 for all.

Sold out not surprising looks like another run will happen soon.

This for a regular person is sufficient enough.

    • Blu ray is bad with its 'upscaling'?

  • +1

Been running my watt meter after a while and have found the figures to be correct on the website.

    Standby is 0.1w
Active DTV with mediumish sound 193w

  • I want to hear more reviews about input lag and delay with video games.

    • No good for competitive multiplayer and games requiring fast reactions. Tolerable otherwise.

      • +1

I have my HTPC hooked up to my amplifier and I have to delay the audio 200 ms in VLC in order to get proper sync.

        200ms!

That is not tolerable for any form of gaming.

        • It sounds a lot like post processing without a gaming mode option.

        • @carlitos:

Since posting I have sourced a dual link DVI-D to HDMI 1.4 cable that lets me run 4K at 60hz, or 1080p at 120hz. Previously I was using a mDP to HDMI 1.3 cable that topped out at 1080p 60hz.

There's no significant delay anymore. I would guess around 20ms delay which would be fine for most gaming. I can still tell there's a little bit of input lag from moving the mouse around the screen, but my audio and video are synced up fine.

Problem is that it's hard to drive games at 4K with my 970, and I'm having a lot of trouble getting the scaling to be done inside my GPU, i.e. run a game in 1080p but scale it to 4K on the output so that I can play a 1080p game on my TV from my PC but the TV sees a 4K signal so it doesn't have to process the image as much.

It's going to take a fair bit of dialing in, and probably some driver switching as it's a really niche thing.

I would still much prefer an update that would allow me to run 1080p straight to the TV with minimal lag.

        • @c0balt:

          Very interesting, thanks.

  • Anyone else brick their tv during update? :( hopefully there is a hard reset our something

    • I am unable to Scan for channels without it resetting. Anyone else have this issue?
      Did the firmware update also.

    • It's not a brick - it's a table according to the prior comments.

  • Can't seem to work the Keyboard on the remote? Is there a setting to activate it?

As when I tried to use it to enter the Wifi password I got nothing and had to use the onscreen

  • +1

I'm actually glad i didnt buy the tv, here is why… having over a grand in cash in my pocket i set out that day to go buy a tv, went to a few placed had a look at my options for that price point your looking at something like a changhong, soniq or hisense brands….these brands aren't BAD, no worse if not better than Bauhn.

So why am i happy i didn't get the Bauhn ? Well first of for about $200 bux you can get something that looks nicer from a more reputable manufacturer with 3 years warranty.

To me warranty is the biggest thing, 12 months is simply not enough especially when forking out $1200 for something. I generally am a big believer in getting extended warranty usually for the maximum lifetime so 5 years for an extra $120 is worth it in my eyes just as insurance.

I ended up speaking to a nice guy in JBHIFI and he was about to sell me an equivalent Hisense UHD Tv for under $2000…. he gave me a flat cost of $1899
    http://hisense.com.au/tvs/K680/65/120

It looks better, its Android powered, and it comes with a 3 year REPLACEMENT WARRANTY… BOOM… to me i would of rathered gotten the Hisense, its from JB, its a reputable shop, 3 years extended warranty, similar spec but probably better build quality overall… for only a bit more.

Not only that, i've done enough research to now realise that RIGHT NOW its not even worth getting a 4k TV, media is not even mainstream, TV has a while to get their, Netflix has 'SOME' content but aussie bandwidth cant even cope with it, or not for me anyway. And all DVD or TV content is upscaled. Which reading about looks rubbish and no difference to getting a 1080p image.

Here is an interesting article i read
    http://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/4k-ultra-hd-uhd-vs-1080p-full…

Its all true, even me not being an audiophile would understand that depending on your environment will depend on wether you see the benefits of the 4k or not. For me i wont i have a distance of exactly 4 meters from the couch, so i would not see a significant difference between 4k or 1080p. The closer you get yes you would see benefits.

Here is what ill probabaly end up getting if you want a half decent tv and missed out on the Bauhn
    http://hisense.com.au/tvs/65K390PAD/65/0

You can get this tv for about $1699 from JB.. that's $300 bux more than the Bauhn and it comes with a 3 years replacement warranty.

So what would you rather get in light of my above observations ?

Was first in line and first to buy at Aldi Warringah Mall. I arrived 6.30 that day as not to miss out. Now I have the TV I can describe it in one word "disappointing".

The TV is cheap for a reason…$1200 is cheap, but when it performs so poorly it's becomes expensive! Will be returning it…So back to my original plan, keep saving for a Samsung js8000 or js9000.

  • +2

can now order them from Aldi
    https://www.facebook.com/ALDI.Australia

"We heard that some of you missed out on our Bauhn 65” Ultra HD Smart TVs on Saturday, they were so popular we found more just for you! Come in store by 5pm Saturday 19/09 or call 13 25 34 and order one now! Stock will be available by 30/10."

    • That is a more than a month wait time. Do we need to pay for that in advance?

      • +3

Edit: Just called them and no payment required at the time of booking.

      • It's probably to give them time to process all the returned TVs and box them back up as new.

Edit: as Monger already made comment in the new post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211459#comment-3051764

  • One week after purchasing no problems to report all good very happy. Also attached a 4 port usb hub with four 2tb hard drives and all of them are all working. So the tv does take oner 1tb hard drive no problems.

    • +1

You have 8TB directly connected to your TV!? I'm not sure whether to be impressed or not.
