      A very good mate of mine bought a Bauhn telly from Aldi six months ago after his 5yo Sony gave up the ghost. I set it up for him.
      A couple of observations: The connectors at the rear seemed cheap and flimsy. The picture was pretty dodgy for a "modern" LED panel.
      Refresh seemed slow. Software seemed clunky. As with most ALDI electronics items I've had any experience with, you pretty much get what you pay for. Cheap for sure, but rarely offer the sorts of specs and or performance of the other "brand name" alternatives. My mate is happy with his purchase (so far, so good) but he's not exactly a technophobe, and is a self-confessed "that's close enough" practitioner.

      A grand plus is still a fair chink of dough to part with, and will offer a hefty dose of buyer remorse for anyone expecting performance on a par with the panels available from the big retailers.

        Just use a universal remote instead- that one has horrible buttons that barely work, I got the $15 Aldi one, did the job fine.

        That said I threw out the box, that thing is huge where am I meant to put it lol.

      I bought a 42" TV from them in about 2009/10. Had an issue with it after 6-9 months. Called them up, they sent a bloke over who picked it up, repaired it and brought it back. No worries and it was sorted very easily.

      I think that Aldi's warranty support is excellent. I haven't had a problem with the Aldi 32" tv that I got for the kids a couple of years ago, so can't comment on tv's. But, my son's Stirling Washing Machine's pump had to be replaced twice (same day service on one occasion). The third time it went, just on 3 years after purchase, Tempo offered full refund of purchase price. You can't get better warranty support than that !!

    A lot of these off brand TV use Samsungg and Sony panels don't they?? Anyone know what this one uses?? Was tempted by that 65" UHD Samsung for $2500 but wasn't sure about the curved screen. If using a decent panel and good refresh rate might be worth a go..

      Actually I believe Sony uses panels from either Samsung or LG (i think it is predominately LG now a days). Judging from the contrast ratio, this should be a Samsung panel.

      My guess is based on the fact that IPS panels seem to have a contrast ratio of 1000:1 whereas AMOLED panels seems to have 4000:1. IPS is made by LG and AMOLED is made by Samsung, having said that though, I don't know if there are any other panel manufacturers out there besides these two.

        The 42 inch Bauhn UHD panel was apparently made by a Taiwanese company called AU Optronics. (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2406216&p…). They actually make a decent percentage of all the panels out there (over 16% of the large panel market, according to wikipedia). It could also be being sourced from Innolux, but I'd put my money on it being AU Optronics.

        The thing is the panel is only part of the story. An important part, absolutely, but only part of it. The tv could have a great panel, but be rubbish because of all the other parts that make it go. Would love to see one of these working before laying out any money, but that tends not to be possible in Aldi so it's a case of buying it and - if it's awful - returning the thing. Which will be a pain for something so big, but for the price might be worth the gamble.

          I'm pretty sure it can as the chrome 4:4:4 was a limit of the input tech ie hdmi 1.2 and dp 1.1 rather than the actual panel.

          Input lag would be very relivent if u wona use it like a monitor as I'm planing too.

          I'll take that bet. It's lcd man. It can do 4:4:4. The limitation is Purley on the input source. To do 4:4:4 it needed over 18gbit a sec. Which dp 1.1 and hdmi 1.4 didn't support.

          The only other reason it couldnt would be the actual processing chip. But if it can do 120hz then I'm gona say it can do 4:4:4 at 60hnz easy.

          That's the crux of it. I'll take ur bed.

          Btw tvs that couldn't do chroma 4:4:4 via hdmi 1.4 could via other input source ie play from internal hard disk or streamed.

          The limitation isn't "Purley" (purely?) on the input source, you even say so yourself in your next line.

          It can't/won't do 120Hz on the inputs either so saying "if it can do 120hz then I'm gona say it can do 4:4:4 at 60hnz easy" is also not correct.

          It'll do what ever it can fit through the hdmi bandwidth as long as the chip also can process it. I can't calculate what itll need to do 120hz at 4k and 4:4:4 but it'll be a lot and I doubt HDMI 2.0 or dp 1.2 can do that. At 60hz I'd say so pending the chip also.

          If not. Let's shake on it and put our money where our mouth is.

      Can't go wrong until the software goes out of date and there is no update, as per my 32" Medion (Aldi) panel. And it wasn't even a smart tv. Awful software is something to be avoided- poorly updated software is worse. I'm not sure that even opting for a Google certified TV avoids getting stuck with an unsupported TV though!

      I don't think they actually offer that do they? It's normally 1-3 years depending on the product. Receipt is the main thing ALDI requires with refunds. There are few cases having a receipt won't give you a refund.

      Pretty sure it is. Can't guarantee it, but the 55 was fine with my Sony BD Player. The CEC even turned the BD on when you turned the TV on and controlled it through the TV remote when you had it as the source.

    I picked up one of the previous 55" UHD mentioned above. This one comes from the same importer and the menu is the same and the remote is the same, so probably the same manufacturer in China.

    The TV "was" (I'll get to the was in a minute) quite good for the money. There were some legitimate complaints about it, but the picture was good and overall if you treated it as a monitor and ignored all the "extras" it was good value for money.

    As someone who actually owned one and was happy:

    • Yes there was some blur in action, but you could minimise it to being almost un-noticeable with the right settings and the firmware update. It was worst with the internal media player.
    • Yes the sound was truly horrible.
    • The smart functions were buggy and limited. No netflix or possibility of adding it. You can play local network streams plus youtube, but this was about it.
    • The digital plus feature for Australian TV content was so slow as to make it almost unusable. I think they have removed it from this TV.
    • The remote, even though it has a lot of buttons and a keyboard, is IR based and has a limited focal range and a noticeable lag, so you were never sure if you hit the button or not. Lot's of missed presses and a lot of double presses as result.

    Even with all that, I still like it because it had a good picture, ARC, and CEC. Chromecast and my Sony BD player take care of all of smart stuff, and the CEC meant that the TV remote controlled the TV and both devices. I already have a external speakers, because let's face it, just about all TVs have horrible speakers.

    Now for the reason I don't have it any more. A few months in it started to blank out the screen when you first used it. At first it was a couple of seconds, then it got to being a couple of minutes. Once on it worked fine, but if it was off for a while the problem would re-occur.

    I logged a support request and they sent out someone pretty much the next day. He picked up the TV and took it to be diagnosed. The problem is that they have no parts for these TVs and no stock. Aldi takes a specified number and that's all they have. They rely on returned TV's to salvage parts to repair others or they simply refund. In my case there were no parts and they refunded me. Not my desired result, as I would have preferred the TV, but they did do the right thing.

      I bought the 55" too and pretty much agree with your run-down. I returned mine, mainly because the colour was awful, and the remote was so slow and unreliable there was no way I could do the 200 or so button presses needed to adjust the colour. Also, if you weren't dead in the centre, the picture looked really horrible. (Most TVs nowdays have a limited viewing angle, but when you do move off centre the picture is still enjoyable, just not perfect.)

      However my wife and anyone who visited thought the TV was perfectly good. $800 was definitely a fair price.

      I now own an expensive Sony. Freeview+/catch up TV is pretty bad and sluggish on this one as well, only marginally better than the ALDI. It was also worse on the ALDI because you never knew if the button press on the remote was registered or not.

      Personally I think the Soniq TVs at JB have a much better picture, but cost around 50% more.

    Would love to hear about someones experience in using this as a monitor. If you can get 4k 120hz over HDMI 2.0, then that's fantastic.

    Phillips 40" 4k 60hz is a very popular buy at ~1k.

      There is more to a TV as a monitor than just refresh rate. Check the colour space it supports at that resolution. If not 4:4:4 it won't be all that good.

        I wouldn't bet on it. 65" is very common and most mainstream brands have at least one model this size. 75" is still more of a niche buy, which is why Aldi / Braun may not bother.
