  • blast from the past!

my dad is using my xperia u, it's an ok phone but it irked me when sony quickly dropped support for it.

    • +1

      Blast from the past???
It was only released in March last year…

Though the Xperia U was released May 2012.

      • it reminded me of my xperia u :)

and honestly, with those specs, can you blame me?

        • Still better than my Nokia 1208.

    How to unlock this mobile?

    • +4

In my experience. I bought one of these Optus Sony Xperia E1 (prepaid) from Kmart a few months ago. The Optus mobile unlocker itself on their web site spat out a free unlock code for it straight away. So i'd say try the Optus mobile unlocker first you might just get an unlock code for this free.

      https://secure-unlock.com.au/ou/launch

      • Yes. This unlocker work for me as well. Has been using the Telstra $30 SIM for $2 on it with no problem. It is a cheap and ok phone.

        • Telstra $30 SIM for $2 ?

        • @ccwwayne:

Actually it was $1. I stocked up till end of next year.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/197427

        • After completing the details, it says "Based on the details you have entered, you are required to pay: $25.00 to unlock your mobile device.". Any clue? Which store should I enter?

      • In their page they ask you for the Optus mobile number. How can I use it if I'm not a Optus user?

      • Thanks hollykryten. Just bought the phone and used the link you provided to get the unlock code.

        • in the link he provided you have to give them your optus phone number right?

        • @kiLbiL:

No you don't need to supply an optus phone number, it's optional. Just leave the field blank.

      • Upvoting @hollykryten for that optus link. Apparently the $14.50 Samsung from Woolworths with the netflix deal wasn't locked.

Glad I didn't waste $25 to unlock it.

      • +1

This doesn't work for me for some reason, takes a while to load then says "this is not a locked Optus mobile device". I'm guessing I don't need to activate the Optus sim first?

        • Yea, same here.

Are there reliable 3rd party issuers of unlock codes?

  • Thanks, bought 2 for my parents, hope i can unlock them

    • How? limit 1 per person
      or bought it seperate.

      • Might have used two separate accounts (1 per account) to buy 2 of them.

      • -1

        seperate

    • +6

bought 2 for my parents, hope i can unlock them

      Are they in the basement?

  • Awful phone but great price, still miss the Y550 from HN though. Unlock and a root (I can see the puns…) and it's a great phone!

    • +4

      Why is it awful?

      • Dual core, 4GB storage and 512MB ram… I look for quad core, 8GB storage and 1GB ram as a minimum

        • -1

          Y550 is 4GB too though.

        • @Gravy: Yeah… but it's a quadcore with 1GB ram and was as cheap as $35 for a while… all of us were rooting and linking to microSD though.

2 out of 3 ain't bad for that price!

        • @kronicmacstigator:
Yeah, Ive got one too. Not sure why someone downvoted me for stating a fact though… some people eh.

      • +3

+1 to negate the down vote, legitimate question for those who don't understand.

        • Thanks

    • +1

The Y550 was a great deal, better than this. Still I bought an Xperia E1 for my mum last year for $80, so this is a great price.

    • Had big GPS lock issues so I will get this which I know works

  • I have a Z1 compact that I'm sending away for repair.
Would this do the job ok?
I need to link it to my Pebble watch.
I'm assuming all Android apps I use will be ok too.

  • +1

why did i buy one of these?

    • +1

Because your existing mini SIM fits in it.

  • bought thanks hows the camera on it for skype?

    • It's crap, but at least it's there.

  • +1

I would be spending extra and get something with atleast 1gb of ram.

    • Link2SD.

I only discovered this the other day…

      • What does that app have to do with his comment?

        • Well, on quiet reflection, it has nothing to do with his comment.
But it would have been right on point if he'd said "internal storage" instead of "memory".

    • -2

As stated above, don't buy a phone with less than 1GB of RAM.
I think this is one of the most critical factors in these low cost phones.

Low storage is a bit painful, but an microSD cards solves most of the problems.

      Dual core processor is acceptable.

Even the low screen resolution is workable, but you can't fix the low RAM problem which slows the phone down so much.

There are other better phones going around for $20 more. It is $20 well spent!

      • It's actually a decent phone. Easy to unlock, easy to use, nice speakers. The RAM is an issue but for a casual user (calls, text, FB, etc) it isn't an issue. I used this for 2 days coming from my OnePlus One, a Snapdragon 801, 3GB RAM behemoth of a phone. And it worked just fine and got me through the day. Generally snappy, ran lower-end games and my GBA and NES emulators well, as well as handling web browsing like my OnePlus did. It isn't as much of a bottleneck as you think it is. Just keep in mind it isn't a $550 phone, and ease on the tabs and you'll be fine.

    Thanks, first smartphone… :)

    • +4

      Congratulations! :)

I know the feeling, to be honest I was late to the smartphone party also. But trust me, once you've warmed to your smartphone you'll never get by without it!

      Oh, and one other thing.
      Enjoy!

    • I remember my first smartphone that I earned from working during my highschool years about 4 years ago. Coming from the old Nokia brick and other flip phones of the time, it was amazing to see a mini-pc in the palm of my hand.

    • Let the all-day Angry Birds binge begin…

    • Welcome to smartphone where battery life is terrible and endless hours of frustration :)

  • Does this have front facing camera?

    • No

    • +5

No, so it's probably suitable for you.

      • hah sarcasm here in ozbargain :D

  • Only home delivery? I cannot find the way to use "collect in store".

  • Bought one. Good as a spare. Will probably load a rom with less bloat.

  • Is it possible to match price at OW? Not sure how it works.

    • +1

If you find a store with stock at Officworks, you should have no problems price matching the price so long as it is still in stock at Dick Smith. Usually they will also include the delivery cost in the final price, so $29 + $7.95 = $36.95 then - 5% price beat policy you should pay around $35.10

      • Thanks!

  • Any alternatives or similar cheap smart phones good for an oldie? The reviews dont seem good for this phone (poor battery, resets are issues mention). Anyone had actual experience with this phone?

    • The Nokia's are good. Like Lumia 530 532 etc.

  • This phone is a bit useless for me because it doesn't support 850 3G.

    • This says it's 850 (you need to expand the 'Network' entry).
      Doesn't mean it is though…

      • You linked to the XPERIA E. This is the E1.

        And yes it's only 2100/900.

        • Oh, oops - here's the right one.
Hey, i did get it right the first time.

          It says:

          HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 - D2004
          HSDPA 900 / 2100 - D2005

I dunno wot dat means but.

        • @steamtrain:

You can try to flash D2004 FTF to it. If it doesn't work means the band is physically disabled on the modem chip in the phone.

        • @rootuser123:

          Oh thanks.
I did get one - if it doesn't work for me i might try that.

  • Mother in law has this phone and works great for what it is.

Picture is decent for a 3mp and last a couple of days easily.

It is only a 3g/2g handset so by the start of 2016 start to see 2g signal fade

  • Good little movie player for the kids at that price.

  • Out of stock :-(

  • Any know if it will work with Telstra or Aldi sim when unlocked?

    • It should work with any 3G SIM when unlocked.

      • The Optus Fit smart from the previous woollies deal didn't work well with the with the Telstra/Aldi sim as reported by some ozbargainers even after it is unlocked so I am just wondering if it is same case with this fone that's all

    • It doesn't support 850mhz 3g, so NO, do NOT buy this for Telstra.

  • Mark as expired guys. Was saving up $37 for this. Sad really. Will have to wait another month or so before a good low range phone discount pops up :((

    • Still not marked…

    • Still listed in current catalogue http://catalogues.dicksmith.com.au/catalogue/full-on-footy-d…
You could ring around and see if any stores near you have stock.

      • I called up earlier and the online rep told me it wasn't a deal in stores "that stores had different deals to online" (I asked the question). Seems like she didn't know what was going on :( I'll try tomorrow fingers crossed. Thanks

        • I got mine at the Fairfield Store yesterday. I got the last one that was there.

  • Correct me if i'm wrong but i call Bait advertising. The catalogue is until 21 september and they've sold out already. They need to have sufficient stock if they advertise a product.

    • Not like they are trying to sell you something else.
