The really isn't any reason why you should be buying this 4 year old phone for that much money. There are better options in the market for that kind of money. Try the Microsoft Lumia, Asus Zenfone, OnePlus, or even Galaxy s5 which can be bought for a $100 more.

Maybe they want an older, high spec and reliable phone with a removable battery and removable storage.
I have a mint S3 and it has everything I need and then some.

      • +2

I have the phone in my hand. DON'T BUY IT!
Like I said, why get something that's 2.5* years old when you can get removable storage and removable battery phones which were released recently?

        • I have had the S3, S4, S5 and this year instead of upgrading to the S6
I went back to an S3.
Thanks for your "expert" "opinion" anyway… LOL

I build hardware for a living. I am an expert.

          @tendollar:
          "everyone" is an "expert". lol
If you were any sort of "expert"
you wouldn't be on a site like this.

          @2bitbludger:

Why can't experts buy things for cheap? Just because I make a good living doesn't mean I like being ripped off. There was a thread in the forums earlier in the year which dealt with this issue.

        • I have the phone in my pocket. Very capable phone. But I won't buy it at this price.

      4 year old phone?

      • Yeah, pretty sure S2 was all the rage 4 years ago.

      • It was released in 2013, so it is two years old

      • My bad. I meant to type in 3 years old, but I guess it might have been released early 2013.

    • Tendollar: A bit harsh, this phone is still better than many ~$400 phones released even this year.

      • I've had one for 2.5 years, so I guess I am sick of it. There are BETTER phones out there, though.

        • Yeah agreed but it is hard to find something as good in the same bracket.
The Moto G 3rd gen is a new release phone and about the same price for Aus stock and it is still worse than the 2 year old S4.

Should be real easy to find examples of these devices if there are "many" of them.

I cannot think of one but please, enlighten us.

          I just did champ

        • @Alister: How is comparing a 1080p device vs a 720p device a good example?

  • crap phone buy a pink iphone instead

    • +2

Yeah imo you aren't a real man unless you own a rose gold iphone6s.

      • +1

lol.. thinking of switching to the 6s because of that HOT colour (i'm female). I would burst out laughing if i see a man with a rose gold phone.

At this price, $418 no no no..
But $274 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/210005), yes yes yes… And damn i missed that deal. I wonder if Officeworks did the price beat for that deal at that time?!?!

  • If it was i9506, I might've said, it's not that bad.
Snapdragon 800 and FHD would get a reasonable performance (though I've seen i9506 at around price from mobileciti, so yeah).
I'd prefer it over 801 + QHD combination or even 801 + FHD (because it's cheaper while having similar performance).

As someone who's using S4 Active (similar spec), I'd say the phone performs alright.
That said, snapdragon 600 is fairly old, it's been used since Note 2. You'd be able to find a better specced phone at similar price.

    • Xperia M4 Aqua performs similarly when it comes to the processor but has a crappy screen in comparison to the S4.
Same price range - $400 approx for Aus stock.

      • I've grabbed LG G2 at around $300~$400, OO Australia, Australian stock.
I cannot really give you a list of phones that'd be within that price range (and I don't recommend LG G2, after looking at how fragile the screen is, but it's FHD + Snapdragon 800), but I will mention few.

        S4 i9506 is $397 from mobileciti (FHD + Snapdragon 800), Australian Stock.
Sony Z1 is $450 from mobileciti as well.
I am not in the market for a phone right now, so there might be better bargains out there (just used mobileciti because I remembered them stocking i9506).

If you go to grey import, you'd find more examples.
        Zenfone 2, OPO etc etc

You shouldn't compare new budget phones to discounted flagships, discounted flagships usually are cheaper because the retailers want to get rid of them. They usually have better spec than the newer budget lines at cheaper price.

  • The only person that this is a good deal for is someone wanting an SGS4.

That person is buying an underpowered phone relative to other devices for the same amount of money so from that POV it's not a bargain.

Or is it a good deal?

… no. Might do better on Amazon, dint check..

  • Anybody know what the last Android version this was updated to? Assuming 4.4 or 5.1.

    • 5.0.1. I don't think it will get 5.1.1, but I am not too certain on that.

    • Australian unlocked (XSA) is still on 4.4.2. We got 4.4.x almost a year after it first came out elsewhere. Other region codes have 5.0.x already but no AU (unlocked or carrier-branded) yet.

    • Thanks. That's one thing that's really bothered me about my last few Samsung phones.

  • It doesn't support all our 4G bands e.g 700mhz ….. get an S5. My S5 was grey import 900i model, and it's on android 5. Can't see any carrier putting in effort for new android versions for the S4 in Australia, especially when it has limited band support and carriers are differentiating themselves on coverage.
