The "kit" components sound like they shouldn't cost more than 10 bucks. How much is the "pi" itself?

    • +1

Pi alone (at element14) is $48. 8gb cards <$7 on ebay including SD adapter, enclosures are a couple bucks, 1m HDMI cable $3 at MSY, I'm sure people have a 2a charger already, otherwise they're cheap too. Not a great deal at all

      • Raspberry Pi 2 Model B: $48.00 (element14)
      • 8GB MicroSD Card: $6(?) (MSY)
      • MicroSD card to SD Card Adapter: (comes with microSD card)
      • 2A International Power Supply: $15.65 (element14)
      • White Enclosure: $9.24 (element14)
      • 1m HDMI Cable: $3 (MSY)

Total: $81.89, so you pay for the convenience of getting all the components all together.

      • And delivery.

        • Delivery is free above $45 at element14.

PLUS GST for everything from Element14… This $86.40 becomes $95.04 after checkout. Unless the OP can confirm this is all they paid I'm tagging this meh.

      • Except for the 2A power supply, all other stuff can be procured from ebay for much less. And if you are a true OZBer, you should have at least 4x 8GB cards lying around from the trend micro/harveynorman cashback deal from from a while back.

        • Yea, but I put MSY prices for some items rather than having to wait for eBay items to arrive.

  • Well in theory, but the power supply is around $15 alone.

    • it looks like a standard micro USb power adaptor.
Unless you're still using your Nokia 3100, then you've probably got a few of those lying about.

      • +2

Most are not 2a though, most are 500ma - 1a

      • Well unless you have a spare it will probably in be needed to charge something ;)

        • Nah, anticipate my new Pi will consume 110% of my time, as such I won't have any use for that soon to superfluous phone.

But in case I do have 3 x Asus & 2 x Samsung 2A charges floating around somewhere.
But your right @Hellman109 most of these are tablet chargers, the phone ones are lower.

Theres also an alternative "Banana Pi" that has onboard Sata connector.

    Comparison here - http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/raspberry-pi-vs-banan…

I would assume that driverwise the Raspberry should be a lot more reliable

      • Seems to be the most compatible board, without major issues. Don't see a lot of ppl complaining about them online.

    • Because the Banana pi has a Gigabit LAN interface, iperf speeds result in 6x faster LAN performance over the RPi 2.

  • isnt the PI under $40? It does look like $20 worth of value at best, that doubles the price of the unit itself.

and the beauty of PI is that it uses crap you've already got lying around… everyone has LCD monitors, hdmi cables and psus and crap anyway

    • +1

Under $40 in Australia? Please feel free to link ;)

    • +2

Well, the kind of person who would buy a Pi has all those bits lying around.
Note this kit comes with an old white enclosure - you probably want the cool new official one instead.

Sure you can buy a cheaper Android mini-PC with all included from China,
but the Pi has much better support and quality control.

Re "Windows 10" - it does not run the desktop, not even the command line! Just the silly IoT core. So that is a bit misleading.
Sure, my router runs Linux, but that doesn't mean I can play Minecraft on it.

  • Does the code work for other items?

    • Tried with just the pi and does not work!

  • Or maybe try the orange pi

    • I have one on order

      • +1

that sounds awesome if you want no support, no distros

  • Would this power an external USB HD?

    • I doubt that (though I haven't tried that myself). I have read a few forum posts that mention that they needed an externally powered HDD. Again, I haven't tried that myself, yet.

      EDIT:
It seems you can use external HDD if your power supply is providing 2A current. But it all depends on what else is driving power from your pi 2. The max current it can support is 2A out of which, .8A or so is required by the pi itself leaving aroung 1.2A for other peripherals. You should be able to calculate the required current yourself then.

  • Anyone know if prices are ex-gst at element14 ? I notice the pi 2 model b board is out of stock at the moment.

    • +4

      Listed prices are ex. Gst.

You'll get the unpleasant surprise at the final stage of the shopping cart process.

      • +1

That's a neg from me then.

      • Ex-GST takes this from borderline meh to non-deal
