Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Generation) $289 with Free Shipping at DWI

50

The 2nd generation of Nest's Learning Thermostat learns your heating and cooling preferences within a week of installing it. This thermostat encourages the increased use of energy saving modes and features by automatically reacting to environmental triggers. Over time, the changes made directly to the thermostat, by a simple turn of dial or from the convenience of your Android or iOS smart devices, will help to reduce energy bills.

The Nest thermostat is compatible with most low-voltage heating and cooling systems as well as emergency heating units and whole-home humidifiers. It features an innovative designed aimed at creating a more artful home. The thermostat is encased by a stainless steel ring, which mirrors wall paint and wallpaper to effortlessly blend in with your home or business's decor.

Beyond aesthetics, this thermostat has several auto energy-saving features such as the convenient Auto-Away setting that activates anytime you leave the house. As soon as you're gone, the Nest will automatically adjust the temperature to avoid cooling or heating an empty home. The thermostat's Time-to-Temperature sensor learns how long it will take your HVAC system to heat up and cool down your home, and calculates the time it requires to reach your target temperature. And, the Cool-to-Dry feature uses your air conditioner to reduce excessive humidity which can reduce the risk of mold. A base, screwdriver, trim kit, mounting hardware, and labels are all included with the Nest thermometer.

Note: Nest has the third generation out already in US market. Based on my quick research, the features are almost the same. The main differences are: new one slimmer and has auto on when it senses movement.

  • Last time I looked into these you couldnt really set that you're in Australia, which put the time of day out, which put its whole programming out as it wonders why you're active in the middle of the night.

Also check that you can hook it up to your heating.

    • They have fixed the AU problem with a recent software update.
I have the Nest Cam and Nest protect and they work great, with correct timezones.
You are correct about making sure they work with our thermostats. The Nest site has a fairly good compatibility checker.

      • Awesome, Im now interested again! No idea if my heater is compatible though, will need to check that first.

        EDIT: https://nest.com/widget/compatibility/

Compatability checker, you will need to be at your control panel to check it though.

Seems an interesting product. But for us in the sub-tropics I wonder if it is suitable retro fit for our air-con needs.

Heating 5 days a year set on low , rug or snuggle seems to work.

Just as an FYI, the RRP for these appear to be $199USD for the 2nd Gen (this model) and $249USD for the 3rd gen.

Looks like you're basically paying retail with the convenience of free shipping and a retailer with a local presence for warranty claims.

Know if the 3rd gen is worth the price difference?

      • +1

Personally no, but a quick glance showed they are keeping gen 2 on the market so it should continue to be supported. There's a few reviews out there for gen 3. It's probably an individual choice as to whether it's worth the jump. The review a week or so ago I glanced over seemed to focus on the smaller form factor and improved display as the marquee changes.

Might need to factor in cost to ship a 3rd gen here as well if everywhere is selling it at RRP for now from the US, as well as the obvious warranty hassles.

  • This won't work with an LG ducted reverse cycle airconditioning system will it?

Good luck working out the heating preferences of my wife. I've lived with her for 15 years and haven't found any trend that I can notice - hot, cold, changes ALL the time. Good luck NEST!

I put 2 of these in my house. They don't have all the automation stuff of the nest but they are only $40 and let you control your aircon from anywhere.

    • I got the same one from Aldi. Works well enough after you program in all the remote control functions you need.

I'm curious about these and whether it is of any use to me. I'm not sure what the big deal is, but to me if it's hot/cold, I press a button to turn on aircon/heater on demand. If these are hooked up and control the aircon/heater, won't it waste a lot of energy? I mean, people have fairly good tolerances right? Not as if the temperature goes over/under by 1 degree we have to turn heating/cooling on? Serious question…
