  • If one has a 17-50 2.8, Is it still worth getting one of these?

I am unable to make decision, hence the question?

    • Probably yes, but not exactly sure which lens you have. This lens is faster (much better in low light), shallower depth of field, potentially sharper, fast focusing. Be aware on crop sensor camera the 50mm is an 80mm effective focal length so you can't take photos when too close to people/things

    • I think you have a Tamron or Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8, right?

In that case, you should not worry about getting the 50mm Prime as the focal length is already covered in your fast zoom at a constant f/2.8. The difference between F/1.8 and f/2.8 is lucrative but I would not bother much. :)

      • Thanks guys, Yes I have a Sigma and I was worried about doubling up on the focal length. Phew… finally can resist atleast one temptation during this ebay sale :)

  • You can grab the older version of the lens from Kogan for $87 also (plus 2.5% cash back)

This is 100 times better than the old one.

      • Lol 100 times? Where the hell did you come up with that random unsubstantiated number? Optically they're equivalent except for the rounder bokeh due to 2 more blades.

  • I'm still a newbie with the dlsr stuff. What type of photos is this lens best suited to? Is it good for taking photos of our kids?

    • It is a so called portraite lens.
Does not mean that you cannot use it in other situations.

Answering the second question I would say yes, providing it has a fast autofocus (which most likely is the case). Again it depends on your expectations.

  • We have the 18mm-55?mm lens that came with our canon 600d were reasonably happy with that. Then purchased the 18-135mm lens and were blown away with how much it improved our photos even for people who don't really know what we are doing.

Just wasn't sure if this would be as an impressive addition ?

    • This would blow out any 18-55mm kit lens or 18-135mm zoom lens Image quality wise, but that depends on the photographer. Its great for mastering/learning photography, Bokeh is good, low light performance is incredible.

    • +1

18-135mm is a pretty good lens.

the 50mm is pretty awesome lens - you just need to get use to working with it. zooming makes you lazy so you need to start using your feet more etc, but the picture qaulity is going to be alot sharper. any prime lens generally gives you a step up. really comes down to what your taking shots of.

      • Yeah, this is my first lens purchased after having the kit lens for a while and I love it! I think it has spoiled me enough already to not use zoom lens ever again. :)

  • Ordered. Can't wait to test it out.
Things I will test: IQ, STM, low light wide open and go through the aperture stops. Day light and sharpness at different f/stops.

    Blood moon coming up.

  • The price just went up $20 as I was about to order! Bloody kogan!

  • Damn procrastination and spending hours reading reviews cost me $20. Anyway excited to receive it.

    • eglobal has it for $135 with free shipping
      http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/canon-ef-50mm-f-1.8-…

      You snooze you lose!

For next time, Prime lens is always high quality over zoom. So just check/compare the price and return/warranty terms of the seller before purchasing.

    • No need to read reviews. This is the traditional next lens upgrade from the kit lenses.

You should check you youtube videos of vid capture.. low light performance is amazing..

  • Monday morning and the first thing Kogan did is jacking up the price. I'm marking this deal as expired.

You guys can get it here with free shipping for everyday price of 149$ - http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Canon-EF-50mm-f18…

    • How long does DWI take to ship.. Do they have local grey stock or ship from overseas ?

      • Don't know, but my guess would be overseas.

  • Clicked the link this morning https://www.ozbargain.com.au/goto/212947

Geez you snooze you loose alright.
Though. This is ozbargin, wait a few months Nov/Dec and someone will post more specials on lens.
