  • Good stuff.

Doesn't this require a purchase of the Chromecast?

No, only ownership, as per the title. cf: "Does exactly what it says on the tin" :-p

Not working for me. I have 2 chromecasts. The offer is there but it will not let me redeem, says I've used the maximum. I've read the T&Cs and it says maximum 5 offers per account, I think I've redeemed 2 free movies, maybe 3. Oh well, worth a try. Maybe it counts music offers as part of 5? Anyway worth a + for those who can use it.

    • Chromecast 2 is coming!

      • First I've heard of it.

use it everyday pretty much as I control Netflix and YouTube from my phone and watch them on my big TV in bed. Best smart device out there. I'm amazed anyone buys Apple TV with this out there.

Apple TV has dolby digital output. Some of us cheapskates don't want to buy a new amp just for HDMI. And I like the apple remote.

        • I use the output on the TV for my setup, admittedly it's only 2.1

        • I get Dolby 5.1 on Netflix through my Chromecast

I bought an Apple TV ages ago when there was a decent sale with a bonus iTunes gift card.

I have really enjoyed using it, but the remote is frustrating to type out movie titles, you are limited to the apps displayed on the home screen, and it really only benefits you if you have an iPhone, iPad or Mac computer (I have iphone and I used my iPad before selling it recently.)

I bought two chromecasts, and really thought that I could sell my Apple TV on gumtree and just stick with the Chromecast for a more versatile experience! Also,=I got the Presto 6 month access from the Telstra post on OzBargain, and at the time it would only work on a chromecast, not apple TV.

        BUT…..

Casting from my iPhone to the Chromecast is actually really buggy. I have had several issues where the video doesnt play straight away, if I unlock my phone the video cancels, and sometimes it just doesnt work smoothly. To be honest, most of it is to blame on the Presto app which I frequently use, but even Netflix and Youtube casting stuffs up sometimes. I have noticed that using an Android to control the Chromecast works better than iPhone.

NOW… I decided against selling my Apple TV. The Apple TV Airplay is actually pretty flawless. Now Presto supports Airplay, I have a much better user experience streaming via the Apple TV, and can even Pause/play the show from my iPhone lock screen. I can also use the Apple TV to stream Music and Video content directly through my Denon Amp.. so I can play this content in my lounge, or in Zone 2 on my kitchen TV and loudspeakers. I also enjoy better sound quality, and overall better compatibility compared to the Chromecast!!!

So in conclusion.. Im glad I didnt jump the gun and sell my Apple TV. It has pros and cons, so does the Chrome cast. I gave one to my mum, and the other is on my small bedroom TV for a convenient way to watch Netflix and Presto, but it is still buggy with my iPhone and Laptop Chrome browser!!!!!

Sold our Apple TV and replaced with 3 Chromecasts. Still have arguments with Mrs muncan who misses her Apple remote.

        • @muncan: I find no-remote being one of the best features of Chromecast.

I found it much easier to use my Chromecast once I took it out of the box.

I use mine for PLEX, have two of them so I don't have to keep switching between TVs. My stupid smart TVs can't stream from PLEX or play MKV files =(

      • What smart TV won't play an MKV?

        • My Samsung TV, ive tried before and it just says format not supported… Its quite old… One of the first gen smart TV with 3d capabilities, so it might not have been a a priority at the time.

    • I use mine to watch videos with my headphones in so the wife can watch her shoes on the laptop with the sound up

Those wives and their shoes. I don't know.

  • Use it everyday. if you havent yet use with this:

  • Hey guys, I was just wondering how the Chromecast actually works in terms of connection with a device. For example I'm streaming a youtube video. If it is close to buffering (but doesn't) on my pc will it buffer on my TV?
I guess what I'm asking is, is it working from the internet wifi or is it more like a wifi communication between something like a camera and phone? Is it basically, if it loads on my PC it'll load on my TV?

    Cheers

I think once you start your video, it is played directly from the chromecast. Your device just controls it. How I can say that, if I am watching a netflix video, it keeps working, even I switch off wifi on my device.

  • Another free movie, thanks for the headsup.

  • Keep them coming OP

  • +2

I don't get why movies are $6. I can get one for $3.50 from the kiosk and I'm not using my own Internet download…. Seems like a flawed business model

    • +2

      Convenience?

  • Didn't work for me on my Sony TV that has built-in Chromecast.

BTW if you are as stupid as me and couldn't figure out how to find the offers, I'll save you 30 minutes of digging around: you need to go to this website using iOS, Android, or Windows Chrome browser:

    https://cast.google.com/chromecast/offers/

    • Doesn't work with nexus player which has chromecast built in either
