"RED HOT OFFER from Barbeques Galore"

        "Last edited 4 min ago" - Wasn't there 60 seconds before I posted :(

My gas refill days ended long ago when no-one seemed to have the staff to do it so I did what most others did and joined the Swap-&-Go 'rip-off revolution' but I've gotta say it IS very convenient :) I assume I can get my Swap-&-Go bottles refilled with this offer yeah?

    • +1

Yep I didnt want to own another gas bottle that will just expire.

      • +3

Swap it once in 10 years. Problem avoided.

        • Not that easy….. When you swap, you could get a bottle that will expire any time from a few years to 10 years away.

        • +1

          @Level380:

When you swap get one with a long expiry, if it isn't long, complain.

        • @serpserpserp: You don't normally get to 'choose' and you can't complain if its only got 2 years on the expiry. The idea is to keep swapping it on every refill.

Anyhow Bunnings now has the swap/go for the same price, so no need to worry!

    • Yes, my local BBQs Galore advised to get a swap n go bottle as mine was nearing 10 years old. Choose a newer one and you'll be fine for ages. Refill normally $20.

      • will bunnings take my old purchased almost expired bottle and swap it for a swap and go for me?without extra costs?

        • Bunnings don't even check the expiry date. I've taken two expired bottles in, they just swap them.

        • I found an old gas bottle down in my back shed. definitely old, with a little rust. Bunning took it.

        • +1

Swap and go eventually test and re-stamp the bottles too as far as I'm aware once they hit the expiry. I've seen a few bottles with new dates stamped on them over time… or more specifically BBQs galore noticed an expired date and then found a fresh certification on the bottle. Next refill I decided to find one with only the single date stamp and much more recent.

        • +1

yes, the swap and go people inspect, stamp and then put back into circulation. It's not that the bottle rusts out inside, there is an "overfill" tube inside, and they need to make sure that it hasn't become detached, or people could overfill, expansion on hot day …. not good combination. Very few bottles are "rusted defective" unless off a boat. It's leaky valves, overfill tubes, etc that can be the problem.

I now just see who is cheapest on the day and close…. rays (in brighton they have a sign out the front for fill price as I drive past) , bbq galore, bunnings swap n go, they all take the bottles, some refill if they have the facilities, some swap if they can't refill themselves.

        • +1

          @garage sale:
Funny you say rusted on a boat. I found a Rusty old gas bottle with barnacles on the beach. Reckon bunnings would accept something like that as swap and go? Lol

      • +3

        "Refill normally $20."

Last time I checked earlier this year at BBQs Galore in Woolloongabba (Brisbane), they were wanting $25 or more for a 9Kg refill? Perhaps they've realised that gas refilling is a recurring consumable that allows them to maintain contact with customers with BBQs?

        • +3

Yep, just called the 'Gabba store & confirmed it's $19.95. This must just be a VIC special :(

        • Yes, owner at my local BBQ Galore was talk about that only the other week. he lower price of his gas few months found to pay off big time.

    • From Swap n Go website:

      Does SWAP'n'GO accept out-of-date bottles?

Yes! We accept out of date bottles at no extra charge.

Their reasoning is that they can check expired bottles-it's a safety issue.

  • Would Bunnings beat this, as they only have swap-&-go?

  • Good deal OP! - I just called BBQ's galore Hoppers Crossing and they confirmed, but was unsure how long this offer would last. Her guess was 2 weeks… Will be down there tomorrow!

  • Great price OP!!!

  • +2

I called Rockingham WA and they knew nothing of it - 4kg are $14.95 and 9kg are $19.95

    • What do you mean rockingham are doing it also or not?i got a free bottle from someone 2 years ago not sure how old it is does it say,is it best to get rid after 10years?i would not fancy swap and go if i purchased a new bottle but i dont think it matters if its swap and go as it was free bottle and not new anyway and i still to use the bbq so be looking to get it filled very soon or swap and go.

      • not get rid off after 10 years, needs to be inspected after 10 years ….. they check the values, internal rust, fix valves if needed and back into circulation. Internal rust isn't common because the LPG has very little moisture in it. It's the valves that start to leak and make sure overfill relief works, and the seals perish.

Better than the ripoff 45kg home cylinders. Just have to swap it once a week lol.

  • Does BBQ galore refill swap and go cylinders? Anyone have any experience with this?

    • Yes, as per previous comments.

  • My first BBQ galore gas bottle is going strong after a year and a half. I don't have a BBQ every weekend, but the dial has been on empty for the last 3 cooks. Like literally touching the empty pin. Gas still flows, meat still cooks. It pays to have two.

  • suspect this is Vic only. nothing online about it

  • Excellent price. Just make sure you check the expiry date as some stock may be several years already. Definitely a bargain.

    • +2

This Deal is to fill up your own Gas Bottle :) So your own Expiry Date

  • Is 9kg of gas lighter than 9kg of petrol?

    • +2

Are both being measured at the exact same location?

    • Joking?

    • +1

Yes it is. Most places have been whipped into covering up "9kg" with a sticker that says 8.5kg.

      • has to do with overfill and the size of the bottles and standards …… you get 8.5kg of LPG now, it's not a scam, it's standardisation and we don't manufacture bottles in Australia anymore.

    • the gas, because it needs a heavier container

      • You COULD fill the 9kg of gas into a weather balloon I guess.

        • lol - pointless discussion, but the weather balloon i suspect would be as big and heavy as a large hot air balloon that carries people. 9 Keys of gas uncompressed would take up an awful lot of space. lol just sayin'

  • +2

Crap, Northland is the only store close to me, and this offer not valid there….might try price match at Bunnings!

  • If your gas bottle is still half full, but you need it filled up, do they just charge you for the gas used? Or full price

    • +3

You need to have two bottles. Use one till empty, swap over and refill the empty one later. Cheaper and more convenient in the long run than trying to guess if you have enough left for your next bbq or camping trip.

      • Thanks, it's just some folks from Church need to use 2 bottles simultaneously and the I think they both still have some gas in it. So guess no way around it.

        • +2

manic's suggestion works no matter how many bottles they're running…just need a spare.

Run one empty, swap with spare, fill empty.

  • +1

Metro at Wyong/Tuggerah (NSW) charge $12 (used to charge $10 for one.

  • Not in WA

  • +2

Also available in SA. Just got the catalog.

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to rig the lpg filling at petrol stations to refill the bbq gas bottle. Now that would be the real bargain way of filling it unless it's illegal.

    • Yes there's a way, yes it's illegal

  • So do they refill for you or do you do it yourself?

    • last time I did it here in Brisbane they took it out the back and refilled it for me

  • I guess its BBQ time more often.

  • +1

Is there a way to store these 9kg bottles into a super tank so you can OZB the hell out of this deal?

    • yes ……. you can decant from 9kg bottle into other bottles …… need the right fitting and you tip the 9kg bottle upside down .that you are decanting from…. it's what some people do to refill 1,2,3,4 litre smaller bottles if in a hurry, financially strapped, or camping and don't want to take lots of little bottles.

Please research and read the hazard warnings ….. unlike cheap chinese mobile phones with poor 4G coverage, or free postage from gear best and wanting your stuff in 1 week, LPG decanting is an area to read the details before undertaking to get a "bargain".

    • the next size up is a 45kg tank which cost about 80bucks to fill. = $16 per 9kg.

this deal is cheaper, but probably not worth the bother.

  • Paid $30.80 for a Swap & Go today. Seems like a good deal.

    • +3

You are taking it up the tailpipe at that price mate.

      • +1

Ha ha. No doubt. Tyranny of distance I suppose. I curse living in the sticks!

  • Purely by chance I swapped at Bunnings yesterday with a 9kg, it was this price, $14.95. Didn't even seem like it was on special so didn't think to mention it.

    • Oh man :( Just called my local Bunnings (Rocklea QLD) and they're charging $22.98 for a bottle swap! Wonder why the prices are so different from store to store & state to state?!

If anyone knows of a $15 refill or swap special for Brisbane or runs a retail outlet that does this pretty please post the deal here.

      • Oh, sorry, this was at Albury Bunnings, NSW. Some businesses around here though go by Victoria pricing as we're on the border of Vic. Not sure which it is sorry. We also have a BBQ's galore in town so might be competing with them.

      • depends who is close by …… when you have bunnings and rays next door ……. they really price drop ……. bunnings on it's own ….. not such a good deal.

And service stations don't seem to be into discounting swap n go and target convenience ……
