  • Good thing I signed up to this a week ago for more points :-)

Now to spend $1,000 on the card for those sweet, sweet points!

    • Only $500 spend is required. T&C says $1000, but points will show up at $500 :)

  • I just got the Amex Platinum edge 15k points return flight for 195 dollars.

  • If I already have an AMEX (bog standard velocity escape one) is there anyway I can up to a better one and reap the benefits without cancelling my current one and waiting for 12 months?

    • I quickly skimmed the page and couldnt see whether you had to be a new AMEX member. Maybe this is open to everyone?

How can you tell what 50k points will get if you are upgrading an economy booking to business if possible?

      It's in the T&Cs:

"Offer only available to new American Express Card Members who apply by 9 November 2015, are approved and spend $500 in the first 3 months of Card Membership. Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product offered by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 12 month period are ineligible for this offer."

    • Check the last post regarding a deal on this card, but from memory a number of people who on paper shouldn't have met the 12 month limitation reportedly were still awarded the points. Results may vary, and who knows if they'll police it harder this time.

  • It was 100,000 points bonus which ended yesterday

    • Thank you, just set it up :)

  • If you want a long term card and are happy to forfeit the points, I think the free 12 months through Priceline for a Platinum Edge is a pretty good deal to consider - https://www.priceline.com.au/amex and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198715

No 50K points and no lounge visits, but if you want to keep the card the annual fee is lower at $195 with an included return flight. The points program in my opinion is more useful too awarding 3 points per a dollar spent on groceries and 2 points per a dollar on petrol, where the card in this promotion gives 3 points for dining out and other than travel related expenses (Virgin or travel agency bookings) you're getting 1 point per a dollar.

Priceline has an optional bonus where if you spend $200 you'll get 13500 points (plus another 2000 for shopping at priceline, where you get 10 points per a dollar spent), although you can choose not to partake in that.

Anyway it's an alternative for those not wanting to pay a $350 annual fee, want an included return flight (which should cover the $195 annual cost), solid points scheme, a card to use with Amex Connect offers but are happy to pass on lounge visits and the one time 50k points (which is half what you got a few days ago).

Yep the platinum edge is a great card. Domestic flights on offer are better than what is available on the velocity card for people in WA. No big initial points haul, but great for everyday use.
I got the velocity card a month ago, so now I've got the earning power of the edge & the 110k points haul (which can be very useful if you have somewhere to go soon) of the last deal.
For ozbargainers, we shouldn't consider this a 50k signup though when there's 80k referral links out there. 80k might not get you return business class flights, but it should be sufficient for an economy flight somewhere decent.
Remember velocity points can be converted to Singapore airlines KrisFlyer points at a rate of 1:1.35. If you are short on KrisFlyer points it's possible to effectively buy extra through SPG. The points game can get involved, but short story is that 80k can be useful.
Oh remember also that if you intend to sign up with a significant other to sign up yourself first, then wait a couple of weeks to get your card & then refer them. That way you net an extra 20k points (180k between you)

  • Fantastic card. Great to see companies enabling such big bonuses for us Aussies. Can definitely recommend this card to everyone!

  • Here the analysis I did for the points, all from Adelaide so it would possibly be slightly less points/taxes from other cities

    International:
    • Adelaide – Auckland/Christchurch return economy, 33800 points + $160 taxes flying Virgin
    • Adelaide – Auckland/Christchurch return business, 67600 points + $160 taxes flying Virgin
    • Adelaide – Bali return economy, 33600 points + $120 taxes flying Virgin (before 03/03/2016)
    • Adelaide – Bali return business, 67600 points + $120 taxes flying Virgin (before 03/03/2016)
    • Adelaide – Bali return economy, 47800 points + $170 taxes flying Virgin (after 03/03/2016) Via Sydney as no direct flights anymore from Adelaide after 03/03/2016
    • Adelaide – Bali return business, 95600 points + $170 taxes flying Virgin (after 03/03/2016) Via Sydney as no direct flights anymore from Adelaide after 03/03/2016
    • Adelaide – Los Angeles return economy, 94000 points + $188.31 taxes flying Virgin
    • Adelaide – Maldives return economy, 90000 points + $145 taxes flying Singapore Airlines
    • Adelaide – Abu Dhabi return economy, 94000 points + $145 taxes flying Etihad
    • Adelaide – Any main European city – one way economy – 62500 points + $87.83 taxes
    • Adelaide – Los Angeles one way business, 94000 points + $127.50 taxes flying Virgin
    Domestic:
    • Adelaide – Melbourne return economy, 13800 points + $47 taxes
    • Adelaide – Melbourne return business, 27600 points + $47 taxes
    • Adelaide – Sydney return economy, 21800 points + $47 taxes
    • Adelaide – Sydney return business, 43600 points + $47 taxes
    • Adelaide – Brisbane return economy, 21800 points + $47 taxes
    • Adelaide – Brisbane return business, 43600 points + $47 taxes
    • Adelaide – Perth return economy, 33800 points + $40 taxes
    • Adelaide – Perth return business, 67600 points + $40 taxes

This of course doesn't go into converting your points to Singapore Airlines and using their award chart, which is also quite generous and very easy to do.

Will this deal be reopened, or should a new deal be posted, as the deadline has been extended to 31 May?

    • Reopened

  • Excellent deal. 80k for sign up + flight + lounge access + insurance. The points alone are worth $450 in gift cards

  • Wow, looks like they have increased the sign on bonus (when using the referral links) to 100,000 bonus Velocity points. Found this from their site when I clicked on my referral link:

    • Receive 100,000 bonus Velocity Points when you apply by 15 August 2016, are approved and spend $2,000 on your new Card within the first 3 months1. This introductory offer is available to new American Express Card Members only.

Can the OP update their post to help further users? Hopefully anyone who hasn't already get the card can find this information useful :)
