  • I would not recommend the Sonos Play:5, because you can't easily use it to stream your computer's audio or as a bluetooth speaker, as it requires clunky workarounds that never worked for me

    • +7

I have one and they're great., The whole point is that it's standalone and works without needing a PC.

    • +2

It has line in, plug that in and select it in the app?

    • +3

Umm, sorry, it is as easy as installing the Sonos controller on your PC/laptop (if you have the music files stored in your PC) or even easier if your music files are stored on your NAS - just use the software/app controller to point where it is…

…or am I misunderstanding what you are trying to do?

      • I think BlahBleh just wants to use it like any old Wireless Speaker which of course it isn't. It's a far more advanced device and while not as 'simple' as a $10 Bluetooth Speaker it isn't even in the same league and blows its competitors away with its functionality, sound quality and of course scalability.

        • +1

Totally agreed, and when Sonos makes the portable version with bluetooth capabilities, then that would be prefect

        • +3

Given that it called the "PLAY:5 Wireless Speaker" on their website, I would have hoped that it could be used as a wireless speaker.

As it stands, you can stream music from your computer, but there is very little in the way of workable solutions for streaming real-time audio from movies, games, etc. There are paid DLNA apps for Windows, but they result in a delay of a second or two for the speaker.

So people should be aware that it is not a wireless speaker for a computer.

That does not mean that it's a bad speaker, but I would not describe it as a functional "wireless speaker" (for anything other than just listening music).

    • explained?

    • +1

Wait, you're down-rating the Play:5 for something that it was never designed to do? Who's fault is that?
Sonos are not a bluetooth speakers. None of them even have bluetooth radios!

Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to wirelessly stream PC Audio out to my Sonos units, but that's a far cry from what these units were actually designed to do.

For real, Sonos is one of the only pieces of tech in my house that my Wife actually enjoys using. I've never heard one complaint about things not working.

      • +1

See above. I do use it as a speaker and the quality is good, but the device itself a "far cry" from what it potentially could be at a $412.50 price point, and it is advertised as a "wireless speaker" by the manufacturer.

I don't consider a 1s latency good enough for a wireless speaker (as it ruins movies, TV shows, games and sports) so people should consider that before making their purchase.

The line-in works fine if that's considered a workable solution for a wireless speaker.

      • +1

sorry negged you by mistake. Totally agree with your statement. Love my Play5 and Play1's

    • It's not bluetooth speaker if you really want bluetooth ability add logitech bluetooth receiver for 32 dollar from dicksmith

Great price on an excellent product! I'm away for work and have it hooked up in my hotel room with an apple airport express. Have setup my own wifi network in the room so I can stream everything to it.

    • You brought/bought a Play:5 for your hotel room? That's dedication.

      • +1

Hahah no. I brought it from home. I did but the airport express here though…. Well worth it!

    • I did same thing with Play 1 and cheap Vodafone prepaid pocket wifi. Set it up using the data and worked fine. A bit lighter than airport express. Can't beat Sonos for sound quality.

  • Bought, only gave me the option to click and collect at Chadstone and Southland in Melbourne. Wouldn't let me use free delivery for some reason?

    • Myer have told me in the past that Sonos don't let retailers do online sales then deliver.

    • Oh wow, maybe no delivery, apologies!

  • +1

Thanks I've been interested to try this out. Think I got the last one in Melbourne.

Be careful, buying your first SONOS device is a slippery slope! Once you buy one you'll want more & more :) Bought my first unit back in 2007/8 and within a year or two I'd SONOS'd nearly every room of the house! Testament to them, the first unit is still functioning perfectly even after all these years. I mostly run their 'CONNECT' and 'AMP' units through other gear and only have one or two 'PLAY' units here & there but from what I can tell the build quality hasn't slipped so you too can look forward to many years of SONOS enjoyment :)

      • +2

Thanks for your thoughts. Hopefully they will discount the Play 1 unit when it is due for replacement. A couple of those would be handy.

        • I bought most of my SONOS gear direct form the US and saved an absolute fortune in the process. That was 6-7 years ago now and back when the RRP here was way OTT and overly strictly controlled by 'Playback Systems'. At one point I was buying US SONOS gear direct for less than half the local price but now that it's all become a lot more popular with the new 'all-in-one' type units (PLAY:1-5, PlayBar & SUB) and sold in normal retailers instead of just fancy Hifi stores the pricing has equalised a lot.

Save up for a couple of PLAY:1s and run them in a stereo pair. They're pretty amazing!

        • +1

          @SteveAndBelle:
I do paired play 1s. They sound fantastic. Beautiful range and depth. They are bass neutral so they could be a bit light for some peoples taste though

Wish the play ones could have a line in
Can't use my free Apple Music with Sonos yet ;(
          Spotify works a treat though

      • +1

Agreed, started with a play 1 last year and now I have 2x Play 1s, a connect and a connect amp! This is addictive, I'm looking for a second amp ATM haha

From Myer's online chat consultant "this offer is only available for collection at specific stores, i can see on the slock levels that Perth, Carindale, Adelaide Karinnup and Mt Gravatt have stock available. Sorry it is unavailable in Melbourne. Can only be purchased as click and collect , because it is special offer for stores that have excess stock available"

  • None left in Adelaide.

  • the new play5 looks much more modern. hope they will release it to the market very soon. ideally a new play 3.

    • $799 though, much more expensive than the original Play5

      • Read somewhere that the RRP is going to $749 but i could be wrong.

      • 799 vs 412.5

nearly double, but sonos gen1 has been around for quite a few years. it is time to update it. i would pay 800 for a new model which is arguably better than the old model.

        • I could not find if it still got audio in…

  • Think i bought the last one in Adelaide! good price for the unit!

  • I've got 2 Play 1s in stereo, any point in adding this Play 5 to them?

Or would it be best in a separate room?

    • Use this to replace the stereo pair and have 2 more smaller zones with single Play:1's!

    • Add a subwoofer instead. You'll have the full dynamic + stereo range.

  • looks like New Sonos 5 is out soon
    http://www.sonos.com/en-au/new-play-5-smart-speaker

    • Yep, mentioned it in the post :)

  • Sold out in QLD :(

  • I ordered one for click and collect at Carindale, QLD on Friday. They had three in stock. Went to pick it up today and they'd sold mine to someone, even though I'd paid in full on Friday. Not happy.

    • I went to Garden City, even show unit also sold. One of the staff admitted he bought 3

      • BASTARDS! lol

        Seriously though that does suck.

  • I'd been told by the online team that there were none left anywhere in QLD. Just rang Pacific Fair, they had one left. They're shipping it out seeing as they screwed up. I'd ordered it Friday, was told I couldn't pick it up until Saturday, and couldn't get there until Sunday. The Carindale staff member's response when I questioned why they had sold it out from under me - "you should have picked it up yesterday". A+ customer service right there.

  • My Melbourne purchase was cancelled due to "out of stock" and they are refunding me.

Shame I will probably give the whole Sonos thing a miss now as regular pricing is too exxy for me to justify.

Eventually there will be some properly workable system that allows you to run multi-room audio to existing speaker systems.

    • +1

I would suggest that given that they're replacing the 5 soon that others who sell the 5 will also be discounting soon. Therefore keep an eye out at David Jones or JB Hi FI or anyone else that sells the 5.

I picked up mine from Chaddy at the weekend and am very impressed with it.

    • +1

Agree with Pool, its a fantastic system, keep an eye on other retailers in the next month or two!

    • Hey 'MyFeetAreHappy', I love SONOS and I'd find it very difficult to replace my SONOS system… however I did try a couple of the Muzo Cobblestones about 6 months ago and found them to be an excellent alternative… and a LOT cheaper to boot! Looks like you can get them from Amazon for a touch under $80AUD: http://www.amazon.com/MUZO-Cobblestone-Wi-Fi-Audio-Receiver/… These are purely music playing devices though so you'll still need to connect them to an Amp & Speakers or Amplifier Speakers eg. computer speakers.

      • Thanks I have checked them out based on your suggestion. Look good but ideally after something I can also control with Harmony Ultimate. I have suggested that to the manufacturer LOL
