Rentsmart effective interest rates are 20%+

    • Yeah.. only stupid people rent rapidly depreciating items like Consumer Electronics, rentsmart or whatever other branding they might use..
Just do without for another 12 months (whilst banking the payment you would have made) and you'll be able to afford a far better machine that will be yours for life!

One of my Girlfriend's mates is paying $100/month rent for 12 months on a $1200 TV!! At the end of the 12 months she gets to upgrade the telly…
I nearly fell over when she told me!

Put simply, Rentsmart is NOT the smart way to pay for technology… Unless you're the owner of Rentsmart of course, in which case it's probably a nice tax writeoff.

      • Some of the rental companies do allow you to sell the item at the end of the period. I think that there may be legal/tax reasons why you cannot keep the item at the end of the period, hence RentSmart making you pay market value. The one I'm thinking of wouldn't let you keep it, but you could sell it on their behalf for a nominal fee of $1.

  • Sorry but I'm going to vote negative for the following reasons:

The TV is a Soniq 32" LCD TV. I have one, it's broken down multiple times. I've seen it sell for $500 in JB Hifi.

RentSmart is very bad value, and not smart at all. You have to take a three or four year contract for this deal. With a four year contract you pay $14.15 a week for a $1500 computer. Over four years this is $2953 and you don't actually own anything. If you want to keep the laptop, you have to pay market price on top of the $3000 you've already paid. Also, if the laptop breaks down outside of the warranty period (not unreasonable to expect after three/four years) YOU are required to pay for repairs, even though you do not own it.

I fail to see how anyone could say that RentSmart is a good idea after reading the T&C. You'd be better off buying it on credit card and paying off the $14.14 per week (not something I'd usually recommend).

NB: I appreciate that the original poster has posted the free TV as a deal and is not necessarily endorsing RentSmart.

In summary. A $1500 laptop would cost you $3000 plus maintenance to borrow for four years, plus market value if you wanted to keep it. A $500 TV, as a bonus, in my opinion is not a bargain.

    • I like the way you explained the things, without commenting on the poster. Well done!

  • Bad deal, not a bargain at all.

  • Yeah, i agree. Renting with RentSmart is NEVER a smart option. lol

  • Buy stuff interest free instead if you must. Rentsmart just isn't worth a Soniq TV

  • I don't think the deal represents good value if you read all the conditions/fine print. What you have to consider is justifying the bonus TV with the amount of rent you pay.

  • Fair comments, I guess its only really suitable for people who cant get credit or just simply can afford it, i.e. student and non-residents.
