  • Nice. I dont like buying in that big bulk though. lol

  • Cool.. I just got the email too :)

Also, if you have an ABN, you can register for $55. Not much of a saving, but you get full member privileges ;)

  • they sell prescription glasses……

  • when they first came out, I thought it's kindda stupid to have membership in placed in order to get in to shop, this way they lose some potential customers! I have ways to get the membership & I could go in & browse, but I never did want to go there just for buying couple of things under $50 + needing membership!

thanks for sharing, at least non-costco member knows what they're selling/having discount at the moment!

Though it is pretty difficult to figure out the actual price. $6 discount, what's the original price?

  • btw i am member but i havent get any booklet~~ or any emails from them

  • Not in Melbourne but I see the value here so definitely a winner.

On a side note, welcome back zhenjie, it's been a while since I've seen you post around :)

    I am an existing member.

I have been shopping with them but so far I have not been impressed.
every time I go in there, I feel all the bad U.S vibe from the store. This is from the way they design the ware house, the way the staff are trained to face the customers and their check out process. It leaves a lot to be desired.

    • the staff are slow and bossy where they don't have to be.
    • you have the feeling that the shop owner doesn't trust the shopper and keep checking on you.
    • the warehouse itself is big but not much things to buy from.

Their staff keep saying "we don't have special but we're the cheapest in town".
most stuff are normal street price, none is really a bargain.
(even when you have to buy in bulk)

    and now this

    • Thanks for explaining that. Now I understand why there hasn't been more news about Costcos opening in other cities. I don't think their US model of shopping fits Aussie consumers well.

Costco is in no way worth it unless you're addicted to brand name items

Most of their products are sold in bulk of about 3x what a normal supermarket size. They are priced about 10% less than the normal supermarket price. When supermarkets have specials they clearly and easily beat Costco's prices. Costco also never has specials.

If you're a typical OZbargainer you will be able to find far better deals yourself than you will get at costco.

  • Yes, they are perhaps 10% cheaper. But don't forget, if you don't consume the goods quick enough, you are consuming something not as fresh. Which means it's really cheaper in terms of price, but not freshness. And people often pay "PREMIUM" price for freshness and that means something.

    • +9

Yeah I hate toilet paper which isn't Fresh :)

  • I love Costco! But I do agree that it is not for "bargain hunters" like Ozbargainers.

The discounts they offer are not huge. They are more for people who want every day low prices, so if you run out of toilet rolls, you can go and buy it today without waiting for them to be on special.

But the best is to go to Coles/Woolworths plus Costco then you get the best of both worlds.

    Thanks for sharing.

Costco is definitely a good place for people who live near by.

But for people like me in South Eastern area, the $60 membership fee wouldn't be justified as

    Bulky items
    Average price
    Madness car park
    Long check out queue
    Not easily access,long travel time

I would rather to pay a little bit premium to shop locally: easily parked, buy what I need, quickly pay n go,nice n easy.

  • You guys are crazy. You are never going to buy everything from Costco for 70% off the regular price. It all depends on what your buying. For instance their Levi jeans are 50% off but then things like toilet paper is a few dollars off. The coupons let you save even more money on already discounted prices. Sure you buy things in larger pack sizes but its great for people like me who like to entertain or have people over.

Costco mustn't be doing too well now after all the hype is over…

    • +6

That's a silly statement. How is this any different to any other companies advertising?

      • -2

        …and now they're getting defensive too… :O

  • You only have to buy one decent pair of jeans there and you'll more than recoup your membership. Not everything's a bargain, but the same applies in any shop.

    • -2

Really ??? How much is a pair of jeans there ??? And are you so sure I can't get them cheaper down at the Vic Market ?

      • Are you serious? The Vic market. Really? We're not talking counterfeit jeans here.

        • -1

          Neither am I.

So how much is a pair of jeans at Costco to justify the membership price?

  • +1

Guys: +1 for me from shopping at costco.
If you have a party it is great: go pick up 946g packet of chips, etc. makes for a relative cheap party.
And for prices, I find it about 20% cheaper.
Example: 1 kilo Yumi's chumus at Coles: around $9-10. Same product at Costco: $6.50 last time I checked.

Remind me to do a shopping basket comparison next time.

  • Guys,

Costco is quite successful in U.S. and other countries. For example in Janpan and Taiwan, I see people still supporting Costco and because of their enter into market, its actually bring more competition in the market and aleart other marker player to join discount and offer value product for consumer. Which this is not the bad thing.

Australian market require more competition and more variety of brands. In past many many years, Coles and Woolworth dominate entire country, what we actually benifit from?

Give Costco more time and we should even encurage such other big box player like Carrefour (French company) into Australia. They don't need membership and they do sale things in small package not big bulk. Australian will benifit from it won't lost anything!

Finally just have look Costco's web site in the U.S., folks their LCD TV is lot cheaper than what we paying here in Australia!!! Same brand same spec (even higher spec than us!) freight or purchase a ticket fly to U.S. and bring one back here is cheaper than what we paying now. Gee…

Directly comparing costs of tech goods in Aus to the US doesn't really establish your point.
