Dick Smith 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub (with Power Adapter) $20 Click and Collect

170

4 Port USB 3.0 Hub from DSE for $20, down from $59 RRP.

Part of a one day only "BELOW COST CLEARANCE!" sale. Online only. Plenty of other items on sale:

https://www.dicksmith.com.au/promotion-terms-and-conditions

Reviews on the site for this hub aren't great. I haven't owned one, but most of the reviewers don't seem to know what they're talking about (people who know what they're talking about would generally buy this stuff from MSY etc. but I have found USB hubs to be notoriously hit or miss).

There are some happy customers, and I've seen it in store and it feels well built. For $20 I think it's worth a shot if you're on the market for one.

    I think you mean
    NOTHING BELOW COST CLEARANCE

Seems to be the cheapest dick has offered it according to: https://www.pricehipster.com.au/product?id=EJf-Abhyq2

    • well, cheapest in the past 3 months at least.

    • cheaper on ebay this is rebraned oem stuff

      mine died within a week

  • Thanks OP.

I've been looking for a usb 3.0 hub that's front facing and doesn't cost the world for ages

I'm hoping the click and collect store actually has the stock so I can collect today or tomorrow…

  • 20W adapter, pretty decent. I'll give it a try, despite the reviews.

Seems to be plenty of stock everywhere for click&collect.

5v x 4 amps. So ignoring losses, you get max 1 amp per port. Not going to charge your tablet or phone quickly, but passable.

      • Is it definitely 1A limit on the ports though even if only one thing's plugged in?

Either way, it still works for my use-case. I need it for four xbox controller docks.

      • +1

The total is 4A - you may get max 4A on a port, or maybe they limit it to 2.1A.

        • Unlikely, this is a hub, not a charger.

      • USB3.0 spec requires 900mA per port, so 1A per port before losses is about right.

  • Belkin 7-Port Desktop USB Hub

    Clearance $15 @ officeworks

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/belkin-7-po…

    • +2

That's USB 2 - those have been cheap for a decade.

    • +1

As KentT mentioned above, this isn't USB 3.0

    • Any idea how much power the adapter provides? I am looking for a multi-port charger so could be a good deal depending on power output.

  • Thanks OP. Got one

  • Support Supports Windows XP / Vista / 7
No mention of Win 10 (or 8/8.1 for that matter!) support. Drivers could be an issue.

Edit: Also, common with several of the bad reviews is no x64 drivers available?

Would love to hear if anyone has been able to check recently.

Picked up a great little 4-USB 3.0 hub from MSY the other day. Cheaper than this shit and unlike Dick Smith, they don't advertise as if they're doing you a huge favour by charging a reasonable price for goods.

      Which brand?

      http://www.msy.com.au/peripherals/10421-channel-uh340-usb30-…

$25 for their cheapest powered hub. You didn't get 1 cheaper, don't lie

      • -1

Lol wasn't lying. Purchased mine a few months ago (wasn't a notable brand I admit), went in store to purchase and picked it up for $16-$18. Wasn't on special, maybe they've jacked their prices or discontinued that specific hub as I can't find it on their site. Don't accuse people of lying, I'm not really sure what benefit I would gain by doing so….

QUOTE: "Purchased mine a few months ago"

One of these statements is not true… therefore you are lying.

@ozdavo: Yeah 'the other day' was more an expression than anything else, if it was at all misleading than I apologise. But while we're nitpicking every little thing, technically it was the other day. The exact words in that phrase have no actual, quantifiable time limit. The other day implies a day in the past, which it was.

          @stevensx:
No stress, just trolling/taking the piss.

  • Is it possible to get USB 3 hubs that rely just on power from the PC/laptop without needing to be powered by a separate AV adapter?

    • +1

      Yes and no.

Lots of them work simply without plugging in the power adapter. Fine for keyboards and mice, or things like printers that get their power elsewhere.

But they cant supply enough power for high power devices like external drives.

    • There are heaps of them around without power (just see the MSY price list) but as Kent says you won't be able to use them for external HDDs. With powered ones at least you have the option.

      • Thanks! Been looking at getting one but would use it mostly for all my small stuff like cooling pad, mouse, Xbox controller dongle ect

  • How long does C&C usually take?

    • +1

I've had it take up to about a month at some stores. Others tend to be a lot more reasonable and its usually within about 24hrs.

      • Really? My last two MSY C&C orders took an average of about ten minutes.

        • This one took about an hour before my text message came through, and that was fairly close to lunchtime.

        • We were discussing Dick Smith C&C as that was what the deal was about…

      • PERSONALLY, I have had 2 C&C orders with Dick Smith (both Karingal, VIC). I received collection message for the first order within the hour. PROBABLY within the half hour, but i cant properly remember). The second one as C&C from dick smith ebay store, that one i ordered late at night, and was ready by lunchtime from memory.
So from personal experience dick smith is great for it

With BIGW, they don't use stock from the store, so that took like 2 weeks or so (felt like an eternity). And Harvey Norman i had to call after a few weeks to ask wtf is going on with it, and it was there waiting to be collected for who knows how long. Just didnt let me know it was ready.

  • got mine within in a hour or two.
Seems decent, nice and compact. The power adaptor is ridiculously big

  • It's a good price, but be very careful with the plug going to the computer. In my experience, they break easily, usually it's the socket that breaks, rendering the hub useless (except maybe for charging). I broke a woolies-brand USB3 hub that way. Now I'm waiting for a good deal on a hub with a full-size USB3 b-type connector, but those are uncommon.

Got emailed from Broadway saying there was no stock a couple of days ago. Went there today and they have 15 in stock. However I can't have it for $20 though because it was a one day online exclusive. Talk about dodgy!

    • What dicks.
