this will be great to increase my performance checking emails and browsing Facebook. :P

    • You'll be flying along.

    Can it run Minecraft?

Yeah mate. Just don't put it on high settings.

Depends if you run mods or not…. the mods my son loads chew alot of memory…..8 yr old says he needs 64 bit because 32 runs out of memory

Still haven't found a reason to upgrade my i7 2600k system yet. Over the years I've upgraded the motherboard, ram, ssd and video. It's falling behind but very slowly considering i built it in 02/11.

Probably will wait and build a tiny pc next, something about twice the size of a NUC.

Anyone else in the same boat?

    • I still run a first gen i7 920 in my gaming PC. I have a low power(gen5 i3) NUC as my daily driver.

I am wanting to upgrade to an ITX gaming PC with a newer i5.

      • I'm upgrading my rig i7 920 asap. I have everything but the CPU I want. I'm going for an i5-6600K.

    • Same with me looks like it's going to all be ITX in the future, bad time to upgrade if you ask me

I'll probably wait a few more generations. What Iam looking for is a smaller case that only has slots for SSD drives (4 I guess), no HDD/DVD slots… but big enough for a proper sized video card…. haven't come across one yet :(

      • ITX, yeah that's the one. Was on my phone earlier and couldn't remember its designation.

The only thing I'm jealous of with newer systems is M.2 support but to be honest my original Samsung 840 PRO has never felt "slow". That said I'd be looking at making it a secondary drive with a nice ~500GB M.2 as my primary when I build the new ITX system (probably still ~12 months off it seems)

I don't want to take any steps backwards in performance when I build mine, with the exception of video - I've considered Neo's predicament, if I do need video power I'll still have this original 2600k system (nVidia 960 - but rarely do I need it, silly impulse buy)

For most people even with first-second i7, I doubt a CPU upgrade is going to make too much of a difference, I'd say.

      • +4

I haven't kept up to date on CPU's but last time I looked, the 2600k was still within 10% in most scenarios, that may no longer be the case but until that figure is >50% I won't even be thinking about it.

In all honesty another motive to upgrade will bite me before any significant gains in CPUs are available. I want to go small, I'm getting tired of that big clunky case and all the fans etc. Miniaturization is for me next. I will still future proof it, 32GB RAM, M.2 + Sata SSD etc. The only thing it'll lack is true video power.

        • +1 I still haven't needed to upgrade my i7 2600K. Same gear has been running 24/7 for 5 years now (stole the components on the cheap from a grays Dell factory seconds auction).

    • I'm still rocking an Ivy Bridge here.

I'm tempted to upgrade to a Skylake atm but am also considering just updating my GPU.

My Sandy Bridge setup is still going fine as a back up PC at my parents house.

Mark Bridge is still the BEST. Oops, I am talking about the soccer player in WSW.

      • Using a 5 year old i7-960 in a budget board but I did upgrade the GPU to a GTX970 when they came out . That made a huge difference but I doubt a newer CPU will make any real difference . Default setting for Fallout 4 was Ultra and @1080 it runs smooth as .

        • I'm using a GTX 670 and fallout struggles at 1440p.

980 Ti is whispering in my ear "buy me, buy me, black friday sales"

    • Ha, me too, still holding up like it's new still.

    • Yep. Such a great CPU. I usually only upgrade when I can "double the CPU" for around $400.

    • When my 2600K runs at 4.6ghz all day everyday Im still wondering when its worth "upgrading"

Yer I use a SSD and have upped it to 16gb ram and now have a 980GTX :)

    • I only upgraded from my Q6600 with 8gb ram this year since 2007, only because there was no more driver support for Windows 8.1/10. It's still pretty beefy and will handle pretty much anything you throw at it.

Thinking of turning it into a server

    • I was reluctant to let go of my precious 2600k, but I did so at the beginning of this year…, worst decision of my life !

  • Not entirely sure why people are commenting on the 2600K, etc as they are a completely different class of processor to this one. I'd imagine a majority of people wouldn't necessarily spring for a 5930k at all.

Also I do believe these CPUs do not come with a heatsink so keep that in mind :)

    • Yeah, these aren't gaming CPUs, they are for highly parallel tasks where the extra 2 cores translates directly to 50% more performance which could mean getting things done in one third less time, and how much that is worth depends on how much your time is worth. It's a pretty nice deal for someone who wants to do some intense computing without going all out for more expensive Xeon and ECC setup.
