Found iPhone 6, what to do?

Okay, as per title, I found iPhone 6 on the street, the battery is almost flat and I don't have iPhone charger.

What to do now?

If by the time the battery flat, the owner is not ringing me, what can I do with this iPhone?

UPDATE: Okay, I managed to purchase iPhone charger from local shop (as suggested below), and the owner called this morning and I returned the iPhone. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Use it as a future weapon/brick

    • The police can record the phone's IMEI. If the owner knows their IMEI (on the box, possibly invoice, I also believe you can ask your carrier) then they can report that to the police.

Years ago, a relative had their phone returned to them because they told the police the IMEI (after it was stolen).
(Police found the phone & looked up the database to see if it was stolen/lost, then connected my relative to return it).

As a last ditch effort, the owner can report the IMEI stolen and it will be blocked in Australia, so it cannot be used to connect to a mobile network in this country.

Garbage belongs in the big didn't you ever learn that?

    • -1

      big

Hmm… Could have worked with "bin"…

  • +6

If you slide across to the unlock code screen, press 'Emergency' and then 'Medical ID' - does it give you the name of the owner?

If the phone owner has that set up it will show their details and any emergency contact people they may have set. Might assist you in finding the owner.

    • Good to know that iPhone has this feature (although you need to slide and click on emergency beforehand)…

On Android, the text is showing automatically on the login screen

  • +6

How is this even a question? Hand it in to a police station.

  • +7

try harder. do you even want to find the owner or are you waiting for someone to say 'keep it'?

paper clip in side hole to remove sim, take it into shop of the sim, eg optus/telstra/etc, get them to help (but do not just leave it with them).

could even put sim in another phone you have (may need an adapter), and 1) wait for it to ring, 2) call someone so you can identify the number, then google it.

  • +1

Hand it to the police, smh.

  • +2

    Hand to Police.
Lost item will go to the person who found the item if owner is not found after certain period of time? Myth or fact?

    Otherwise, Apple Store.

  • +6

    Surely this is not serious?!

Do you really want us to say steal the phone or just take it to the police station. If it isn't claimed by the owner you might be able to keep it. But seriously?

If it was your phone, what would you want from the person who found it?

  • +7

Go to local police station. Or wait for police to come around to arrest/charge you for possessing stolen property.

  • Hand it over to the police.

  • -6

Lol who cares it's just an iphone

  • +16

Jailbreak it and Hopefully the owner can't claim it back?? Seriously dude!

I like how you didn't even put the option in your poll to try to find the owner or hand it into the police.

Your poll options say a lot about you and your intentions.

  • +5

Swipe to unlock and press emergency, then press medical ID. If the owner has this set up the emergency contact's number will be there. Call that person. For everyone reading this who doesn't have this setup, please make a point of doing so. I believe this can be setup in the health app. You also include your blood type weight and height.

    • I had set this up very long back and just checked it after reading your comment. I realised I had entered my date of birth while setting this up. I have removed my dob and entered age in () just to avoid the information falling in wrong hands.

    • I have a iPhone no idea how to set up emergency contact number. Can you please help. Ta.

      • Health App > Medical ID > Edit

        • Thanks, just set it up, learnt something new today.

  • +22

    This is OzBargain not OzStealing.

  • +5

No option to call bikies? Disappointment.

    • +1

Option 5: Call bikies to find the owner & return the phone

  • +2

from the poll its quite obvious what ya wanna do with if, i.e. no return it

    • -5

      No English here.

  • +7

Can see your greedy intentions from a mile away. I hope karma gets you.

  • +4

try to return it to the owner.
why is this not an option in the poll.

  • +5

Seriously? Ask anyone at work/on facebook if they have an iphone charger(every second person has one) and charge it up. Leave it sit until they call you. I returned someones phone I found in a cab and they rolled up with a case of beer because they were so thankful. Karma mate, it's real.

Edit: others have suggested earlier in the thread but OP needs to be reminded. Try this: swipe right to the passcode screen and emergency comes up. Press that and then hit Medical ID. Mine has my name and partners info to call.

  • +3

What would you want the person who found your lost iPhone to do?

Make at least an effort to get it back to you (carrier or police would be good starting places) or go on a public forum and try to justify keeping it?

Theft by Finding is an offence under Section 74 of the Victorian Crimes Act 1958.

Not a lot else needs to be said, I reckon

  • ummm why dont you answer it if someone calls? and then tell them where to pick it up.
stupidity to even ask what to do. or if your in the city go to the apple store im sure they can work out who it belongs to.

  • +1

Hand in to the police or you can try one of your other poll options and police will come to you

  • How to reset or use the phone if there's already an Apple ID linked to the phone? I mean when you try to reset the phone it will ask you for a password for that account.

  • +3

I hope you're an uni student doing some sort of research on human behavior…

  • +5

    I highly doubt the update….

  • Because this thread has been bombarded with comments can you please confirm you have tried using siri to ask "Who does this phone belong to"

As others have said swipe left touch emergency call then medical ID

Have you done both of these things??

Next thing is to borrow a iPhone charger off someone. I guarantee someone on your facebook friends list or at work will have a spare charger.

    • Please refer to my update on the original post…

  • +1

Take the SIM out and put it in your own phone until the owner calls.

  • +1

I hope the owner bought you a case of beer, I lost my Bolle sunglasses, it had my number on the arm, replacement cost over 200 bucks, he rang and I picked them up, dropped him a few beers, he was surprised so we were both happy, end of story. It's not hard.

  • +2

sniff sniff …I smell a rat

  • +5

Damn you people so harsh on him . He found the phone and if he want to steel it , he wouldnt make this thread. Anyway good for you that return to the owner .. i hope at least the owner sqy thank

    • -5

Thank you, at least one person being sensible here…others (which potentially not from this forum) might just nick it and be quiet about it…

      • +17

You have one person in here that believes all your bull. Congratulations!

Your poll options said it all to me, but when you asked if you can jailbreak a locked phone and bypass the find my phone app, that confirmed what you really want from this.

        • -6

          Typical Social-Justice-Warior Politically-Correct White-Knight respond.
+ vote must be from Current-Affair audience alike

How about if the OP really desperate for acid/kush money? Perhaps he is un-luckily unemployed?
What will you do in his circumstances? It's quite easy decision to give it back if you are "privileged".

        • +2

@rodinthink: Social justice warrior eh. Has a nice ring to it. I like it, Thanks!

      • Wow.. you joined OzBargain on New Year's Eve!! Impressive!!!

        • -1

Who wouldn't? Ozb community open 24/7, right?

        • Wow.. you joined OzBargain on New Year's Eve!! Impressive!!

… really? you know he was on here at 11:45pm or something? smh…

    • +3

Did you even read his poll options?

He listed everything other than any decent intention to find this phone back to its owner.

      Harsh, I think not.

      • Now that the phone is back with its owner, it doesn't really matter what his/her initial intentions were.

  • +1

Good Job OP :) did the owner pay for the charger?

    • +7

      He gave me $20 :)

      • +2

Its alway feel good to do right thing 😊

        • -5

It did, and quite interesting to see how people react in this virtual world…

Reminds me with the what da phuc hoax (http://www.sbs.com.au/comedy/article/2015/11/26/what-phuc-da…)

        • +4

          @televisi:

How people react in this virtual world? The options you gave us were

          Do nothing

Sell it on eBay as is - AKA steal it

Try to jailbreak, and hopefully the owner can't claim it back - AKA steal it

Use it as a future weapon/brick

None of your options indicated that you had intentions of finding the owner

  • -1

OP must be Good Guy Greg

    • +6

Ha ha. More like scumbag Steve

      • +3

Ikr, OP seemed to have started this thread in search of ways to reclaim the phone.

        • +2

If by the time the battery flat, the owner is not ringing me, what can I do with this iPhone?

UPDATE: Okay, I managed to purchase iPhone charger from local shop (as suggested below), and the owner called this morning and I returned the >iPhone. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Doesn't seem like the OP wanted to outright reclaim the phone + not many people would be willing to go out of their way, buy a charger just so owner has a means of contacting them for the lost phone…

Plus in the end he did the right thing, so let's just give him the benefit of the doubt =)

  • +7

Plot twist: he never actually returned it :O

    • +3

He is trying to salvage whatever dignity he got left?

      • "what can I do with this iPhone?"
reads " what can I do to this iPhone?"

    • +5

lets give him the benefit of the doubt.
For all we know OP could be in school. Looking back to my school years I know there were too many who would steal/shoplift and lowered to moral standard for all others.

Hopefully OP learnt something. Well done on making the right decision!

  • +4

Dont be one of those scum who takes phones and sell it on ebay. Your integrity is worth more than the $500 you can get on ebay.

Edit: read your update. Good on you mate for doing the right thing.

  • +6

I dropped my new iPhone 6S Plus in Bangkok last week, and it disappeared within 2mins of me realising and going back to look for it. I went straight back to my condo and checked "find my iPhone" to see it was on the other side of the city. I jumped on a motorbike taxi and had him follow the GPS trail so I could track down the kind individual who found my phone. The trail ended at a group of thugs who refused to give it back, so I went and got the police. They told me I would have to pay 1000 baht "finders fee" to the thug, and 1000 baht "assistance fee" to the policeman in order to get my own shit back.

Kudos for attempting to find the owner, and doing the right thing.

    • Wow that's 80aud, I'm currently in Phuket and so far have found the city to be quite toxic to say the least.

      • Which city? We had a lovely time in Patong + Karon + Old Town recently.

    • +2

      Wait…. I think I've seen that movie!

    • This happened in Thailand Hugetyla? I'm honestly shocked mate!

    • haha i would of paid

    • +1

Does that mean you can hop on to their bike/motorcycle you 'find', and can claim a finders fee?

    • Kudos for attempting to find the owner, and doing the right thing.

OP didn't even mention trying to find the owner. All his options were indicating that he wanted/wants to steal the phone

    • Did you pay? $80 is still cheaper than a new iphone.

      • Yea, I paid. Cheaper than a new phone and cheaper than my insurance excess.

  • +2

I am congratulating OP for doing the right thing. We need more honest people around.

  • +2

thumbs up for OP! You did the right thing.

  • -1

Take the sim card out and sell on gumtree asap

  • +1

Are you telling me you don't know anyone in your daily life who has an iPhone newer than a 5S and you had to buy a charger? Your money I guess.

    • +2

My friends aren't isheep goobers who like blowing their money on a company that doesn't deserve it.

      • +1

Yes because all iPhone users are sheep?

    • Shouldn't have been too much, around $5 maybe..

And the owner paid him $20 so he would have made it back.

Could come in handy sometime in the future.

  • +4

Obviously this guy wants to keep it/has kept it
Just trying to find an excuse to keep it and will probably dismiss all the people saying hand it in and will accept peoples comments that say keep it.
This really needed a thread did it?
To top it off the options he gives on the poll?? Please.
    Spare me.

  • +1

i found a samsung edge at the shops a few months ago. I just cruised around with it waiting for the owner to call…who wouldnt frantically call their own phone after losing it?…its sad when you know it has full charge and you call but its off :(

  • +2

    iPhone 6 bend test

  • I am glad it has found it's owner.
This should of never ever got as far as it did, nor should there ever of been a question. Take it to a police station, so simple people. If you want to do the charge and wait or try to find owner details all well and good, but the first option is and should always be, police lost and found section. That is where I would be looking a minute after I realized I lost anything as such.
I hope the Karma Grrr strikes down all those that wanted to be evil about it.

  • I found a phone and returned it to the owner. They rang me whilst I was taking it to the Police Station. Go with Karma take it to the cops

WTF is Karma? sit down and think about it for 10mins, i'm getting sick of this cliche quote. I know we all "want" to believe in it, but what is it?
Is Karma an actual entity? when you do something right, does it pop-up and write it down then change your future course of action to hit success or a happy state?
If it's not an entity, then how does it record things and alter your future to ensure good is returned?
Where is Karma when your doing something neutral? (not good or bad) does it go into hiding?

    It's a load of garbage.

Do something right, out of good moral and character. Do something right because you have empathy.
Say: "If i was to lose my phone and someone found it, would I want that phone back"? if YES, then you do that action.
There's very little people that will truly believe that they hope the phone is never found and the locator gets to keep it.

No such thing as Karma, it's as real as the boogeyman

    • -1

I thought bogeyman is real?! Noo…. After all these years living in fear for nothing…

      • I'm afraid you've been taken for a ride bro.

    • You obviously dont bethesda.

  • +6

Wow, next thread question will be:

"A man just got hit by a hit and run car, should I..

    call the police/ambulance
    Leave him alone
Go through his pockets, what I find is now mine (bargain right!)
Drag him off the road and into the bushes"

    =_=

    • +1

      Eat him, its free food

    • +2

Considering how OP didn't have the 'good guy' option, it should really be:

      Leave him alone
Go through his pockets, what I find is now mine (bargain right!)
Drag him off the road and into the bushes"

  • +1

at least they should reimburse you for the new charger….

i dont have an iphone either, we are all android, so we dont have spare chargers here either…. but kudo's to doing the right thing.

  • +1

I can't believe you didn't have "hand it in to police" option.

What kind of a bogan are you?
