This is an extremely good price for 6TB and they're worth buying now if you're after convenience. Shipping is very reasonable too if you're thinking of throwing an order together for Christmas.

    only 6tb

looking hot, can't wait for sub-200 AUD 8TB drives. its coming. as long as it happens before my NAS fills.

    • By that time (early 2017), the price of SSD will be close to HDD… It might be a tough decision!

Not a Seagate hater, but a realist (says every Seagate hater!). Please buy the Seagate, but do not buy it based on the post by Backblaze referenced in the OP's post. You might think 500 HDDs is a lot (sample size for each brand), but this sample size is actually far too small to make a decision if you are considering reliability.

Don't get me wrong - Great price on this drive!

whilst you may be right that a sample of 500 is too small of sample, one should only use that as a guide as it sure will be more than anyone of us will be buying in any one go.

      • Problem is with any studies like that is that you load up based on reputation and it turns out they have a sudden bad batch.

e.g. IBM used to have a very good reputation until the deathstar debacle (I lost a 20gb drive in a painful way).

Reputation isn't meaningless however.. I'd put seagate at the bottom of the list currently.

Multiple backups across different formats (online, usb, hd) is the only way of being safe IMO.

    • False. The sample size is fine and it has actually shown that some of my personal drives have failed exactly in line with their findings. Your only legit argument would be that "any company can have a bad batch, now they should be ok".

  • 2 year warranty is a bit iffy, they expect it to die in 3 then?

    • +5

No, they expect it to die at 2.

Ordered two - just what I've been needing and hard not to take a gamble on at $70 cheaper per drive than local.

Spec sheet indicates they're six platter drives, and the one Amazon review for the 6TB model suggests they have non-standard mounting hole positions. At least they're 'proper' drives, not SMR like Seagate Archive.

Good price for a fast large HDD, but I wonder if it's noisy.

5tb USB 3 external for $115 USD here:

On a side note, does anyone know if it's possible to order 2 of these?I need one for storage and one for backup but it won't let me put 2 in my cart.

  • -3

    yeah but it's seagate :-(

  • +3

This looks like a "proper" everyday drive not a slow Seagate archive drive with shingle storage technology - am I right?

    • +1

      correct

  • Would these be recommended to be used in a NAS in RAID10?
    I've currently got 4x 3TB WD Reds.

    • These arent NAS drives like the WD Reds

  • Everything about this deal seems to be great!!

except for the fact that its a Seagate ..

sigh Just doesn't feel like a HDD deal unless:
    1. We have to wait for the special price to be available at a specific time
    2. The stock is limited to 1-2 per person
    3. Runs out after 20 HDD
    4. Ozbargainers are sent into a rage when they miss out

just want to mention, my ST2000DM001 (2tb version of the series) is abit loud for me, so this drive may be loud as well. Though it's my first 7200rpm drive. Also I am kind of a silence freak (define r5, low fan speeds etc.) just though people should know.

Just picked up 5 of these to upgrade a 8x3TB Hitachi RAID-5 array. 5 of those 8 Hitachi drives were purchased over 4 years ago (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/49729) and are still going strong, so it will be interesting to see how the Seagate drives compare.

So what are you doing with the 3tb drives?…… ;) ;)

      • Don't worry, they'll go to good homes :P

  • What are the chances of a local deal this good or similar for xmas?
