ALDI $200 Security Camera System, 4x IR Cut Cameras w/ 500GB NVR, $100 Quadcopter w/ HD Cam

140

Cheap camera system, not much info or details but for $200 seems like really good value for those unwilling to shell out 2k (installed) for a proper Hikvison/Dahua system.

  • Anybody know how high is their high resolution security camera kit? lol.
    960H or 720P or even 1080p?

    • +1

"high resolution" to me implies HD, which would mean 720p I would assume.

      • +1

"high resolution" does not mean HD.

This appears to be the same kit from Aldi in February but with a "New design with mini DVR casing". The cameras are probably the same 648x582 CMOS.

You can easily find a better spec system for same price or cheaper on E*bay.

        • Yea i did a quick search before for the one they are advertising.
Most of them seem to point at it saying its either 648x582 or 960H.

They deliberately used the "high resolution" to trick people. Since high res can actually mean anything, when they had VHS then high res meant getting DVD, when there was DVD then it meant Bluray HD, then Bluray HD it will eventually mean Bluray 4K lol.

If they actually said "High Definition" then it would mean 720p or above.

If you're interested in this type of entry level all-in-one kit but don't have a local Aldi store, I can recommend from personal experience a similar system from Annke. You can find them on eBay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221705073456, and if you're fortunate enough to grab it during the next eBay sale you'll be paying about the right price for it (you know, this is OzB and all that).

4x PoE cameras, 1tb base, cloud-based login, android/apple app etc. Quality is more than fine for a $300-$400 system.

Re: this Aldi system, I assume this is the pertinent info: https://winplus.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/200332415-Co… Seems pretty reasonable for $200.

    • What's the right OZB price for this system?

      • Whatever the take home price is during the next eBay xx% off sale. That was all I was implying :)

    here's a huge WP thread on it > https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2072731

Voyager Quadcopter appears to just be Syma X5C which is available cheaper elsewhere.

I'm always dubious about the point of all these security cameras in the house. What is is meant to achieve?

If you're really really really lucky, you'll get some 'helpful' footage to hand over to the cops and if you're really really really really lucky the cops would want to do something about it and if you're really x5 lucky they may catch the bastard and if you're really x6 lucky recover some of your shit.

Alternatively put in a claim with your insurer and get all your shit replaced with new ones.

    • It's just to let you know home is OK. And if it's not, at least you will not be so shocked when you get home.

Someone tried to steal my bike. My cheap CCTV camera caught some footage of the guy. I gave it to the police.

A few months later I got a call from the police saying the guy was caught stealing somewhere else and my footage helped prosecute him.

        • Might as well not have any police as well right? What a waste of taxpayer money.

If you're dubious, don't get it. If you don't understand how it can be useful, that's OK. You don't have to. Not everything is made for you, and not everyone has the same needs and requirements as you.

        • -5

Not really, police resources are stretched as it is. They're better of focusing on serious crime.
They're just new toys people like to spend money on. Good to spy on each other.

          @gimme:

They're better of focusing on serious crime.

Yeah, let the petty thieves thrive. They definitely won't get bolder and possibly migrate to serious crime.

        • -5

You're completely missing the point sadly. Police don't rehabilitate petty thieves. Those thieves are let off with a slap on the wrist and migrate to whatever as you put it.

        • +2

@gimme: OK, I guess you know best.

I assume quadcopter is a part of security system…

  • I'm looking into buying the walkie-talkie. Anyone know if it's any good?

    • Okay for really short distances!!

      • Easier to just walk and talk?

    • I have 2 walkie talkie. 1 from jaycar 3w output, for $70, and a boafeng 5w. Tested in residential area: jaycar transmission range about 400m, boafeng about double. I guess these are 1w or 2w. My guesstimate: 100m max 200m.

I am almost 100% sure that this is not an NVR and is a DVR instead….

  • the copter is http://cocoonvoyager.com.au/

How long does the battery last?

7 to 10 minutes of flight time per charge

What type of batteries does the drone use?

    Rechargeable Lithium Ion - included

What type of batteries does the remote control use?

    4 x AA batteries - included

Does the remote control have live video streaming / FPV?

No, the LCD does not support FPV

What is the range of the drone?

    Up to 50 metres

What happens when the range is exceeded?

The lights on the quadcopter will begin to flash and the propellers will slow. If your drone is caught in strong wind, keep your eye on it!

Can it take photos and videos?

Yes, the drone can record in 720P video or take photos

Can you upgrade the battery or improve the range?

After market modifications are not supported and may void your warranty

Why won't my quadcopter connect to my remote control?

You need to ensure the quadcopter is sitting on a completely flat surface to pair. If it is being held, this generally won't work

    • Please help. want to know if this quadcopter is any good for $99.
kid wants it for Xmas. thanks.

      • +2

It's a good toy.. Not for $99 though.. Look for Syma x5c on eBay for almost half the price.

        • Time is of essence. The quadcopter from target was $50. That was worth buying. Don't thinkn they still have it.

        • thanks.checked. you are right. looking at the newer model.

      • Search eBay for newer model Syma X5SW. Comes with real time preview for less than $99

        • Awesome, thanks for this recommendation. Gonna grab one of these (or a Hubsan) for chrissy.

        • @LaTerrible: don't forget to grab battery and charger - $25 local stock.

        • @eatwell365: That's a great tip I've seen echoed elsewhere.

I've been pouring through different bundles on eBay all day instead of working, heh. Seems you can get a fully loaded Syma X5C or X5SW with all sorts of accessories (blades, motors, batteries and chargers…) for around $110, seems the way to go.

      • +1

I got the last one - was a lot of fun for a few weeks but eventually the novelty wore off and it sat unused in the corner…(if the same happens, you could 'lose it in the wind' and take advantage of the 60 day return)

I ended up returning it because the quality of the of pictures/video was bad, really bad, they may say 720p but it looks worst than the first camera phone I had

  • Are the telescopes on sale any good?

  • What about the IP Cam, any good? What about some sample pics?

    • +1

I would assume it is only 640 x 480. Problem is most of these cheap IP cameras have security holes so you don't want to have access from outside of your home network, which undermines much of their point. If you have a vpn it might be ok, but some keep sending info to servers in China.

  • wouldn't this be better for $199?
