50 Blank DVD+/-W Target Brand for $8.49

560

I just purchased these blank DVDs for half price at Target at Shellharbour, NSW. Cheapest blank DVDs I've ever bought. BASE 16x speed. Not in catalogue (URL was mandatory field). I happened to be in store.

Great to see my first post was useful for so many people. :)

  • Couldn't you provide a deeper web link so that we don't have to read the whole catalog?

  • Can you post the media code?

A guide for how to get the media code is here - http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmediaform.php?dvdinfo=1

  • yes plz, I'm looking for it :(( Can't find the deal on the catalogue

    • Same here. I await the listing on target's website.

  • are they called "Base" or something ?

  • What burn speed are these rated at?

16x i got some today. you can get 100 multi coloured cd/dvd envelopes paper sleeves too at target scans up at $1.44

    • Thanks i just grab a pack of the sleeves

  • Can someone confirm if it's on north ryde target? I live quite far away from target so don't wanna waste a trip.

    • You can always call them up to ask - many staff are most happy to help during non-busy periods (e.g. Sunday morning is good!)

  • Best deal i have seen. Can anyone explain the difference between + and -?

    • Just two competing standards for DVD blanks. Fortunately drives these days can handle both formats, preventing a repeat of the Betamax/VHS war. +R has the edge on tracking accuracy, but only slightly. I'd be more concerned about the durability of the brand. It tends to be that cheap brands are good only for stuff you don't losing, recordings of free-to-air movies, software that will be outdated next month, that sort of thing.

I've always though it a stroke of genius to call it +R, making people call the other one minus-R, when it was intended to be hyphen-R.

  • I believe this is cheaper than MSY, even if it's generic I recognise the value.

EDIT: Can someone post a pic of the product so I know exactly what to go for :)

  • Whats the brand name of the blank dvds?

    • They're branded 'base' and are made in China for Target. The shelf-price of a 50 x DVD-R (x16) pack was around $16 but they scan at $8.49. There are plenty at Target in Hobart.

  • Would be good to scan the medica code on the DVD, as some manufactures do produce crappy DVD coasters. You might waste up to 30-40% of your blank media especially if you burn with high speed.

  • I just bought 2 of them, didnt which was better so I bought both a - and +
Very cheap in my opinion, bought 2 for the normal price of one

  • Which target?

  • +1

Liverpool Westfields, they had heaps left

  • +2

Target Malvern has heaps of stock. Most / All DVD media is marked down by varying amounts - i.e. $28 down to $20. Wasn't paying too much attention as just wanted cheap and cheerful. Got 100 paper / window DVD envelopes for $1.74 as well.

  • Definitely not a good idea to purchase if you want something to last for more than 1-2 years, but good if you don't really care about the media you're burning.

  • Just purchased 300 of them (dvd's not spindles!!) at target Bass Hill

  • Do a disc quality scan with dvd speed and then scan the same disc in 3 months and check if its degraded.

  • Plenty at Target Highpoint. Also plenty of cheap $1.44 sleeves.

  • Very good deal going to buy 2 pack ,unable to find in catalog ,call your local store to check the price. I check with Blacktown (Sydney) store they have on special but not on the catalog.

  • Thanks for this just grab one of each.

  • great deal and $6.49 for a 50pack cd-r spindle

  • About 20 left at Target The Glen Vic

  • I would also appreciate a media code read.

So, great deal for the price, but I am not going to put anything I cannot afford to lose on them, or be too aggressive with the burn speed. I usually use this quality media for video recording or software that will only be current for a month or two. And usually there will be a few duds.

  • Thanks Guy, bought 8x 50's DVD- in Hurstville Target, still have about 6 left at 2:30pm, none DVD+.
If it is made by Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., seem alright to me.

    Anyone has any test result?

    • Oh. It also has a big sign saying Base media 50%, other 30% off. So don't be too happy, it is a mark down ,not an error.

  • About a dozen of each type left on the shelf at Chatswood Target. No sale tag on the shelf but will scan as $8.49 so only Ozbargainers know about them, heh heh heh. Go clear them out, guys.

    • lol

    • BTW, out of curiosity, I walked into the Chatswood Target earlier today and they still had heaps on the shelf, probably still a dozen of each -R and +R and they still scanned as $8.49. Only one $6.49 CD spindle left though.

  • Here's the media code for the +R media. They're fake Verbatims…

    • How do you know they're fake?

      • There is plenty of fake media (google "fake MCC 004") and it seems unlikely that target home brand media would be sourced from one of the more expensive media suppliers. I'm open to being proved wrong though.

      • I would suspect they are fake too, most of these mcc004 made in china or hong kong has mixed burn results if you google them. whereas those made in singapore/taiwan/india has much better consistency in burn quality.

  • Plenty at Robina Gold Coast - no ticket with that price but they scan at $8.49 & same with the pack of 100 envelopes for $1.44

  • Plenty of -R and +R at Sydney Broadway store - $16.99 on the shelf with that price but they scan at $8.49. Same price for 50 DVDs shrink-warpped and 50 on a spindle. The pack of 100 envelopes for $1.44 is for a multi-colour pack. The pack of 100 in white is $1.94. Shelf prices is higher, but they scan cheaper. Great bargain.

  • $6.50 for the CD-R

  • Plenty left at Target Reynella (SA) - didn't bother buying any blank media, as I only use the good stuff (Taiyo Yuden), but stocked up on paper sleeves … absolute bargain at <$2 for 100!

All media & sleeves had clearance tags on the shelves, reflecting the current clearance prices (most items were 50% off - eg sleeves $1.94 SAVE $2).

  • Plenty of -R and +R DVD at Shellharbour.
    No CD-R left though.
Plenty of paper sleeves in various packs as mentioned (50/100pk White/Coloured)
DVD covers also 50% off $4.99 for 25pack Clear Double Case.

  • When I picked mine up at Merrylands they had plenty in stock :)

  • Sale for these ends 1st March…

Anyone care to comment re the quality of these discs? Especially burning at 16x successfully?

I bought the DVD-Rs. The first disc failed at 16x at about 85% complete. This kinda freaked me out, so I did another 2 of the same project at 8x and these burnt OK (but I didn't bother verifying).

Using a Pioneer 215 burner with Nero.

    • Will get back to you on that man as I haven't tried tbh.

  • Yeah, they burn at 16x perfectly.

  • Wouldn't recommend these discs, pretty dodgy quality, at least in the batch I bought. Quite a few coasters, and the ones that did work would only burn at 4 or 8x (tried in 3 different burners I have, 2 in desktops and one in my laptop). Cheap and crappy, wouldn't trust them with any valuable data.
