  • cheaper and easier to buy a heap of bottles of Soda water (coles brand, no name, whatever cheapest) and just mix it with the syrup yourself I would of thought

    • It costs $25c a litre using Sodastream in terms of the gas costs, cheapest carbonated water I have seen lately is $0.75 for 1.125L. After 200 bottles you would be ahead.

Also more convenient then carrying and storing bottles from the shop. Particularly if you drink lots of soda or have guests that do.

I've had mine for nearly 2 years but finding I go though 60l refill bottles too quick as like mine really fizzy. Looking to invest in an adaptor and standard refill bottle now.

        • Yes it's the convenience that winds with soda stream, except gas refills can be a hassle.

    • +1

60L is $15.2 refill with the usual promos (such as Dick Smith right now). Or $19 in worst case scenario.
That is ~$0.253/litre for promo or $0.316/litre for worst case.

This doesn't factor in cheaper methods of refilling (there are third-party methods).

Meanwhile, the 75c bottles at coles/woolwoths cost 60c/litre. That's double the price or more!
They also require stuffing 60 bottles in your fridge, instead of 1, or more consistent purchasing of bottles.

Considering I got my Sodastream for 'free' from a different Ozbargain promo, there wasn't any upfront costs for me either. But I'm sure you can work out how many months/years it'd take to break even if you paid upfront.

      • Can you please elaborate on the 3rd party refill methods.

You can get large swap and go gas bottles at the same time…. it's a bit of an upfront investment but you save in the long term.

For us, we're way ahead already with this method and now saving big time :)

I've got one of these: http://co2doctor.com/freedomoonespec.htm
hooked to a 2.6kg tank (from a brew shop)

Thanks for the info. That might provide the final impulse I need to get a sodastream.

          @thevofa:

          No worries :)

This post actually reminded me I was needing new gas before Christmas…. just back from the brew shop with a nice full 2.6kg tank for $26… much better than the $15/20 0.4kg "official" refills from department stores - that's at least a +$60 saving right there as we've already covered the cost of the initial investment ;)

    • Not that I own a soda stream to defend, but those home brand bottles of soda water from Coles and Woolworths seem to not have much fizz and go flat fairly quickly.

this is confusing to read or understand

  • +1

+1 for effort, these make good gifts. Also imho better for environment than buying bottled soda due to plastic bottles etc

Just got the Source model for the inlaws from JB Hifi for $98 last week, $14 for 2 bottles from target

Don't know if they still run at that price, also HN had power at discount

Note, from sodastream website, the source plus extra gas bottle is only for red colour

    Happy Xmas shopping ozb!

  • +1

The other pleasing factor is not lugging large quantities of bubbly water from your car.

I cannot bare the thought of having to make more than one trip taking the groceries inside. Its bad enough bundling a watermelon under your arm while my fingers are screaming our for blood, let alone another 12+ kg of sparkling.

TL:DR Sodastream is an OHS investment…

  • waited ages for a sale but ended up getting Play model from goodguys ebay site for $79 less 5% from cashrewards

  • Dick Smith at Moonee Ponds has the Syrups for just $2 a bottle but not many left this morning - some coke, raspberry and creamy soda only.
