If you're with Optus, great price. Very good phone - not obviously as good as a $700 one, but for $99? It's a steal.

    • +6

Yes for $99 it's a steal considering the screen and camera quality for sub 100 phones. And if application availability is not an issue windows is a very stable OS as compared to android.

      • -4

This is a very petty issue. The phone feels too slow because of the opening app animation? We are "forced" to watch and wait while the app loads? Sheesh…

Either way, this animation is completely replaced for Windows 10. I'm running W10 on the 640 and it runs great. I simply couldn't go back to 8.1. Everything about 10 feels updated, and I'm pretty sure 10 is going to be publically released for all phones within a month.

        • -4

Not really. You have to play with the Lumia 950XL which is Window 10 mobile ready and do a side by side app launch and switch compare with the Nexus 6p and you will know the former is noticeably SLOW.

I am sure you can find both device in carriers store.

        • +1

I think he's referring to multitasking. If you don't get the 'resuming' screen, the app might do a complete refresh, even if it was the last one you used, and even lightweight ones like Spotify. Happened all the time for me, even on 1MB+. Yes, this is a very affordable phone, but WP still mishandles memory in a way that Android or iOS don't, even with comparable specs.

        • @Strand0410:

Spotify is awful, so slow that app even on my 930. Sometimes it just hangs for 10-15 seconds before it'll start a song. In comparison something like the zte buzz plays the song with no delays, and loads Spotify fast.

For $99 you are getting gorilla glass 3, useable camera on par with say nexus 5, and awesome battery life. Only performance isn't perfect, but it's $99.

        • @claud0902:
          which $99 android phone performs
          better than this phone
we are talking about the 640 @ $99

        • Sony E4g and ZTE fit MTK SoC can offer upto double the performance compare to the s400 and depending on task. ZTE fit can be had for $49. s400 isnt the best SoC. Poor app optimisation on Windows phone mean insurances where less powerful processors on Android will beat windows phones performance wise too. For basic users that don't browse on their phones or need any apps windows mobile is great.

        • @costas60:

I am sorry if you are using s400 in windows phone platform, you are at the tail of smartphone market in terms actual app performance.

        • -1

          @Ronnnie:
I have both android and WP and find
that the android struggles a lot especially on mid to low specs phones
soc does not play a huge role
          when comparing android and windows
the sony E4g is $249 compared to $99

          @claud0902:
I am using at the moment a lumia 830
running W10 and have no lag runs very smooth
          BUT
for $99 you will not find anything better than the L640

        • -1

          @Strand0410:

Not only multi tasking but also everything else in terms of performance. What I am pointing out here is the system UI is optimized to give you a smooth impression but the actual performance is behind the competitors.

If those people who neg me are too lazy to walk into the store to play the devices, simply go youtube and search something like Lumia 950xl vs Nexus 6p/Galaxy/Z5P etc app launch speed or speed test, you will find a number of them. All of them tell you the s810 in windows platform sits at the top… LAST.

        • @costas60:

Remember I am not neging this deal. The $99 is good for this phone.

The problem is the performance. S400 chip in Android phones can perform equally or better than Lumia 640 but you are right, you cannot get one at the same price and also has lots of support on roms.

        • +1

@costas60: Firstly, don't make the mistake of treating $99 as the new normal, this is a sale price; otherwise be fair and also consider deals like the $139 Moto G, or every other dirt cheap Chinese Android deal from Banggood. Fact is, WP still has performance issues in 2015 that even flagship specs can't fix. The OS runs perfectly smooth on low-end specs, but the second you start booting up a couple of apps (y'know, actually using the phone), you'll feel it.

        • @costas60:

The Sony E4g is $149 rrp via Telstra vs $179 for 640, compare like for like please. Also the Sony is currently on sale for $99 too. Here:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/226218

I've used the Sony before and it out performs my 930 in just about everything including games. It also has a very good screen despite being qHD, and the camera is quite good for a sub $100 phone. I haven't used the 640 though, so I can't compare them directly. I have used the 830 though, and would take the Sony over the superior 830 for everyday use if I had to have a budget phone. The Fit I have used too and it also outperforms my 930, which is crazy considering one is a pos budget phone and the other a last gen flagship that still sells for north of $400.

I also don't believe any claims of no lag, even the 950xl suffers lag. I've used the 830 and it quite sluggish from time to time, especially with animations.

      • +7

Wouldn't be a Windows phone deal without someone having a cry.

  • $143.20 direct from Telstra if Optus service is an issue in your area.
    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/mic…

    • i see it as $179. Am i missing something here?

      • +1

Yes, it was that price when I posted that comment on 22 Dec

  • Any cheap unlocking service online?

      • is it good for Telstra? Are the bands the same between Telstra and Optus packaging?

        • It's fine for Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. Has excellent band support, even better than my 930 or 735.

  • +10

Chat via Optus App and if you ask nicely , they will give you unlock code for free. I have chat with them & told that I have to go overseas & need this phone to use local sim. They provide me unlock code without any charge.

If you go to store or call they will ask you unlocking fee.

    • They did the same for me too 😊

    • I take you need the phone first to get unlock code,im thinking of this as a gift for family member visiting from overseas.
Ok i know plug is an issue nothing a travel adaptor can sort out but its what they ask to unlock it?
I take this would work overseas ok?

    • Are the codes generic?

Finally getting my Dad to upgrade from the old flip phone to a touch screen, decided on Windows as he can prob adapt to that a whole lot easier, from using his desktop computer, as opposed to Android/ios and having to learn something completely new.

      Budget is under a $100.

      Thanks.

      • Not generic. Linked to imei of the device.

I'm with Virgin and these work fine. Great phone for $180 which I paid, for $99 it's unbeatable. Never lags, great camera, great screen, sound so-so but who cares, apps well you get the most popular ones. I've dropped it multiple times, once will tripping over so basically rammed it into the concrete (clumsy), took a tiny chip out of the corner of the screen that's it, these are built like tanks. It is made by Nokia after all lol

    • How's the antenna and pick up?My Dads complaints that his old flip phone has a really good signal, but one newer phone he's tried doesn't have a good signal pick up and he needs to go outside.

Tempted to get this one for him and then get it unlocked

      • I've always had good reception. Not that I travel anywhere with bad reception so don't know how good this phone is in out of the way places

  • +1

    very keen on getting one.

is the 10% off dicksmith giftcards still available cant seem to find it in the search.

also, officeworks sells this phone locked to optus for $129 if you cant find stock might be worth going in store for a pricematch.

    • You can also price match it at BigW. Right now bigw cards are 10% off so you can get it for $90.

      • So did bigw price match?did you then buy gift card?if so was it $100 making this phone then $90?
Im thinking if this but it for someone overseas who is visiting but its the unlocking thing that maybe an issue?

        • Yes i have price match a lot phones from BigW. You have to show the hard copy of catalogue. For unlocking someone posted a link of bagman who can unlock it.

        • Yes but deal not started yet?did you get this before its at this price?

        • @bwatt99: no after the deal has started.

  • [Please delete this comment]

  • I've been waiting for the price of this one to drop. Looking to replace my Wife's Lumia 630 which has a shattered screen. Paid $80 for that a year or two ago and it has been a rock solid phone for her.

  • Just use mates rate so you get another 10 bux off.

  • From tomorrow Woolworths has 10% bonus credit on $50 and $100 Dick Smith gift cards. Helps make a great deal even better!

  • +3

So tempting. But I already have more than enough phones. With heavy heart I will have to pass this deal.

  • +1

It's still 120 on the website ,when is this deal happening

  • Sorry found my answer

    • where is the answer

I'm seeing $129 on the website. When does this offer start? And can I buy it from shopfront?

  • The XL version can use otg storage. Probably this works too.

    • XL ve4Sion on Winmo 10 doesn't seem to do OTG…. :(

  • When this is happening. Called few store, they have it for 129. Am i missing something ?

    • Boxing Day

  • starts 26th

  • +2

Nipped around our local Target, Optus Store and JB Hifi with the catalogue and all said they will not be matching this deal on Saturday. The Optus store manager even went as far as to say there is 'absolutely no way' he would match it :)

Local Dick Smith has several left but would not budge on the price today ($129 at the moment), thought it was worth a try.

Price goes live online at 4pm Christmas Eve.

  • Can you please post the rest of this brochure? I'm after the TV section.
    I assume it's released for the 26th…

    • This Is my first post so no idea of posting whole catalogue. Let me have a look.

  • +1

I bought the 640 xl on the recent deal. Very happy with it.
Was comparing to a friend's $1400 iphone and really, I can't see how people will continue to pay over $1000 for the premium ones in the long run.

  • -1

$99 is a great price for this phone.

For these who are interested in the speed test among win 10 mobile, android and iOS, you can check:

speed test: iPhone 6S Plus vs Nexus 6P vs Lumia 950 XL vs S6 Edge+ vs Sony Z5 Premium
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzdj5zY1mKg

the result: win 10 mobile is the slowest one.

WIN 10 mobile really need to do a lot to catch up.

not taking any side, just stating the fact.

    • -1

Yeah my 930 beats the 950 in performance. The 950 is an awful phone for $1000 Microsoft asking for it.

      • is the 640 a win10 phone? never have a wp, have no clue which are win10 phone, which are not.

        • Its on 8.1 but will be updated to 10.

        • @Ronnnie: thanks.

        • I got 640XL and all u have to do to get winmo 10 (beta, pretty stable already) is to install the Windows Insider App from store, agree to terms and update. after an hour or so….voila.

8.1 I still preferred andoird. with 10…I am considering ditching android. just check on PC the windows apps market have what you need.

        • @hippo2s:

I prefer 8.1 to 10 at this stage. The wordflow keyboard for one was awesome on 8.1 and best on mobile, now microsoft have screwed it up and no longer best.

I wouldn't ditch Android altogether until w10m fixes up its performance issues and Microsoft makes a good browser.

        • Edge is still heaps better than IE…

          @Ronnnie:

        • @hippo2s:

Heaps better doesn't make a good browser

  • Anyone give me an idea of how much of an improvement the 640 is over a 630?

  • Bummer..just bougt this for $129 from Officeworks last week.
Great phone for the money, if the apps or lack of is not an issue for you.

  • Ah FFS I paid $129 on Saturday!

  • Awesome phone for 129 (or even 299).

Its a steal. I've got one.

  • Great phone…

  • Good phone

  • Juat a quick uneducated question, this or pay for a reliable like new iphone 5 for $150 unlocked..
could google it but value opinions..p.s. i have never had a mobile only an ipad and pc etc..

    • -3

how old are you? 7yrs? I would say go for iphone5

      • over 40 , and I know this may sound ridiculous, that even though I am highly computer literate I have never owned a mobile. I also dont intend to, however it is for soemone else. I looked on one of those compare sites, thought zi would ask some real people.

    • Go for lumia 640. Iphone5 is old.

      • iphone 5 is old, but if for someone else, an iphone 5 (even though its quite old) is still a better option, imo. I recently sold my 3gs. (a mom bought for her young son).

        • Thanks, I think I will get the iphone 5

        • I have an iphone 5s and after uploading the new ios9, it is really slow. Honestly, I highly recommend to avoid getting it. I will prob buy a lumia 640 for myself. But at the end of the day, it is your call.

        • @NickosFoivos:

Are you updated to the very latest version? I found iOS 9 sluggish/laggy too when it was initially released, however on 9.2 is very fast.

        • @Ronnnie: Yes, got the latest update. It seems that the older iphones suffer from lag with the new updates.
Apple needs to push u to the new models anyway.

        • @NickosFoivos:

I have an iPod touch and it runs iOS 9.2 fine. Really the iPhone 5s should run it just as well. The 5s still uses a fast processor. It's only when you get back to iPhone 5 or older that the new iOS should struggle, since there's a significant drop in performance between the 5 and 5s, however you are looking at phones 3+ years old at that point. Pretty much no phone's run latest os well on that age hardware.

        • @Ronnnie:

I agree. ios7 was the best os for the iphone 5/5c/5s models.
I reckon u need to stop updating once you are happy with the os you have.

  • any news on an android port for windows mobile?

  • -1

Is this real? Price is 129 bucks (or was till yesterday)

  • the optus 640 doesnt have a click collect option, only $29.95 delivery charge, screw that

  • Hi All,

Will Amaysim Sim some work in the Optus locked 640 ???
(internet searching reveals that it does and does not in different optus locked phones)
Is anyone using their Amaysim sim in this phone without unlocking ???

    Thanks.A.

    • Confirmed Amaysim works on this phone

  • The Moto E 2nd Gen for $132 looks good as well. Is it unlocked?
Also, is this catalogue available online?

  • +1

Looks like you can get Android 5.0 on to this phone too if that's what you prefer: Upgrade/Update Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE To 5.0 Lollipop

    • Nice!

    • Forget that. The site I linked to seems to be just survey spam.

    • Defeats the purpose of even owning a windows phone doesn't it? Interesting though.

  • thanks

  • +2

Price is already showing at $99 online. You need to call them to place a manual order as it still shows as $129 in the cart.

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/prepaid-mobile-phones/optus-micr…

Another one to keep an eye on is the Laser tablet for $49. Mates rate applies and brings it down to $39.

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tablets-accessories/laser-tablet…

    • I added one, it was $99 in the cart.

    • Lumia listing doesn't state the colour in the specs and no band 28? Looks like a shoddy spec list by dick smith since is cuts off with "Ba" under the 4G frequencies
