    nice find!

the 2tb backup plus slims are also $101 after coupon, but they're $119 so you need to add more stuff to get to $150.

Is this a very thick HDD? I didn't know they did 3TB in 2.5" - does that mean it'll work in a PS4?

    • -3

I don't think the size matters, it will works on PS4 just fine

      • PS4 can only take X amount of mm thickness drives, some 2.5" drives (few, but some) exceed that.

        • Can't you use it as external hard disk as it intended? it works on Xbox 1 just fine

        • +2

Which gumby voted this down? Baldys post down there confirms the thickness issue with PS4's - get your knowledge on kids.

        • @tgame: Nah it doesn't support external disks (yet)

        • @hamwhisperer: oh, that's unfortunate

    • Going back a few years, they used to do the 1Tb and 2Tb drives as a RAID0 500Gb and 1Tb respectively, hence the thick drive sizing… This may be the go here too, 2 x 1.5Tb drives making a fat 3Tb drive…

      • Yeah I remember that, what a gross way to do it!

        • Yeah I remember that, what a gross way to do it!

Gross way to do what? If you want higher performance you can buy a Raid 0 set of drives. Perhaps you don't understand that purpose of these drives is performance and they are targeting a section of the market that puts speed before reliability.

        • @Maverick-au: Yeah so, umm clearly you don't understand what he's talking about.
EXTERNAL HARD DISKS claiming to be "3TB" or even "1TB" and to save money they used 2x500GB drives or 2x1.5TB drives, the disks were hampered by USB interfaces (and they've been doing this stupidity since USB2, not USB3)

This is not about performance, at all. It's an external USB enclosure, often used as a backup drive by their customers, yet they use RAID0 - purely to save money (get rid of old 500gb stock for example) etc

Utter and total rubbish, two drives cost them much more than one drive and no manufacturer keeps massive stocks of drives they offload in such a stupid way.

More rubbish, you don't save money by taking two drives, adding a raid controller and a larger enclosure!

Here is a review of a 4TB dual drive showing that performance is the goal of dual drives like this - http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/seagate/backup_plus_fas….

@hamwhisperer: You really don't have any idea what you're talking about.

        • @O15: I very much do, if you use RAID0 for anything but data you don't care about, then frankly, you're extremely foolish. I've been building machines for 25 years.

More power to you and the other guy, if you don't care about the data? Go for it. Your foolish risk not mine.
(FURTHERMORE, who the HELL would buy RAID platter disks with SSD's now? If you want performance, you buy SSD's, if you want size, you buy HDD's, if you want reliability you RAID5 at a bare minimum)

RAID 0 on platter disks is like buying magic grease for your horse and cart.
          You two have no idea.

OH and I used to run RAID0, several times, it has some uses, external USB disks? This ain't one of them.

No, this isn't the case. Seagate have a 4TB consisting of 2 x 2TB drives in a Raid 0 for performance and a single 4TB drive with reduced cost and their 3TB drive is a single drive. It clearly states if a product consists of multiple drives and cost is higher.

Maybe now they do, they've been doing this since USB2 days, where you're NOT going to see a performance difference. It was about offloading old hard disks. or making a bigger external drive than is currently possible in a single disk, by putting 2 very large disks together.

Using a RAID 0 external USB drive is complete folly, unless it's got some kind of modern interface on it. I don't even think I'd bother over USB3 to be honest, it's very CPU intensive.

It was never about offloading old hard drives but please keep telling yourself that if you like. I guess you missed the number of drives with eSATA and USB 2 etc.

Good for you but there is a large market for these drives and they will buy them despite your warning and they will get the performance that these drives offer.

        • @Maverick-au:
It was either offloading old hard drives OR creating the illusion of a bigger external drive than you could purchase internally, because they 'faked' the size with raid.
They were NEVER about performance and using the technology they do, they are far more likely to break down.
          A terrible product.

pretty sure it's a single drive, but 12mm thick so you can't just pop it into the ps4.

go for the seagate expansion or backup plus slim 2tb, they have normal thickness hdds :)

The currently 20% discount in JBHifi set 4TB Seagate Backup Plus only $174. I I think this is a better buy considering 3 years warranty ( only 2 on Expansion), backup software and 200G free cloud for 2 years.

That isn't a portable drive it requires external power pack unlike the one listed, the drive in this post also has a 3 year warranty.

  • Please can someone clarify this: the drive on this page.. is it portable 2.5? I read everyone's comment but not very clear as opinions seem divided. Pls someone. Thank you.

What is not clear about this drive being a portable 2.5" drive? It states it all over this page and it has never been in dispute.

Even the listing of the product has the dimensions and mentions portable many times.

      • Thanks very much Maverick, just wanted to know if it will definitely fit a ps4 as i just bought one 500gb, with 10 games already bought and 4 on the way so was thinking of upgrading it. Sorry if i caused a headache. Am good now. Cheers

        • It will NOT fit a PS4 as the disk is too physically thick. It's 2.5" in size but it's taller than most, these are rare but do exist.

        • @hamwhisperer: Thanks very much for the super clarity. I bought an extra one on top of the one i got plus another 2tb which will be okay for it. Will use thems other 3tbs as normal back up hard rives. Appreciated

  • It's definitely portable and 2.5 inch can't comment on PS4 but sounds like it won't fit a PS4 due to height, I ordered at 1pm yesterday and was delivered at 9:30am this morning very impressed with officeworks.

  • Thanks OP.

Got 15% ebay discount to $155.55 delivered & used Cash Rewards.

Using mine as a portable external hard drive.
