That's not the same card BTW. This one here is the G1 version, slightly overclocked and cheapest on static ice is around $727.

      • Good pickup!

      • Good catch. My mistake.

      • Honestly a factory overclock on a 900 series card is next to useless as they overclock themselves within their thermal window anyhow.

The G1 however does have a backplate and should give better thermals, so therfore should overclock better.

  • Yep I ordered it! $607 assuming the Cashrewards offer and my card rewards value. SLI here I come!

    • Is your existing card the G1 OC version?

      • Yes it is. I have the exact same card. It was ~$840 when I bought it with my new PC.

just wait until next year when Nvidia release their new generation of graphics cards and get these slighter cheaper if you don't mind waiting.

    • Too late! Haha
Anyway, the estimated release data for the next gen cards from what I heard is 3rd quarter next year. I don't wish to wait that long. Plus, you never know what will happen to the AUD. So I think it's a good deal.

      • Second quarter for Nvidia and mid year for AMD is the latest I heard.

But that may very well get delayed, or stock problems like some new releases may mean you cant get them on release anyhow.

And generally it's not the full range at once either, so if you dont want the initial release cards, you could easily wait till Q3

980s just don't have enough performance difference from the 970s. I don't know why people buy them.

    • people keep saying 20% better overall performance. Is it worth extra ~$140 to go 980 from 970?

      • +1

Definitely not. It's either 970 or 980 Ti at this point on the green side. To buy anything else (for decent gaming) is stupid. The 960 is beyond a joke.

        • This cost $200 more than 970 and is more powerful, and it costs $300 less than 980ti and is less powerful.

Surely its not that hard to understand that someone might be comfortable with this price point?

      • +1

Definitely not 20% performance increase. It is a jump, but probably only needed if you're gaming at 1440p but here's the big catch:

        • if you're gaming at 1080p a 970 will suffice
        • if you're gaming at 1440p a 970 will give you passable graphics with slight tweaks in the games settings
        • if you're gaming at 1440p and want to have all setting maxed out, you'll get the 980ti
        • +1

Well, with me, the 980 was the best card at the time when I got my PC. I plan to have a good VR setup and so my option was to get another 980, or sell my current one and get two 980 ti cards.

I reasoned that moving a few settings from high to medium was worth not spending an extra ~$600 by going down the 980 ti path (and selling my current 1 year old 980). That's basically double the cost of a second 980! I could just as well get 3 980s lol.

        • I can max a tonne of games on 1440P and a 280x, depends on the games you play. And TBH with the last years track record some games are just optimise like a sack of crap so no card plays them well.

Fallout 4 for instance there's a texture pack that improves the base textures AND improves performance.

        • @Hellman109:

Fallout 4 made me rage so (profanity) much. Took me like 2-3 hours of tweaking game settings to get it good.

Basic games are gine CS:GO, HotS, LoL, WoW are a breeze. Maxing out settings in GTA 5, Witcher 3, Shadows of Mordor, Tomb Raider, Fallout 4 etc. requires a decent card to get 60fps+ @ 1440p.

  • Pretty sure I read somewhere that 970 / 980 / 980ti have 85% / 100% / 125% relative performance.
