  • Does this come with any server software?

    • +4

None. But Centos, Ubuntu or FreeNAS is free.

  • +1

    I'd rather go for this… http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Micro-Server-MicroServer-G8-Ge…

Comes with 4gb RAM instead of 2GB for few extra bucks…

    • +1

Even 4gb is really limiting your future proofing… Probably easier to get the 2gb flavour, chuck out the memory and buy 2 sticks of 8gb for a total tasty 16gb of leg room… Install your favourite operating system and prepare to take over the world and enslave all of humanity! Muhahahaha < snarl… cough >

Makes you wonder how anyone @ HP thought 2gb would be 'enough' for a server (even if labelled as a microserver - considering raspberry pi 2's come with 1gb and that's in a lower class and much cheaper)

      • +1

I agree but for most people who use this server as a file server, 4 gb is sufficient

        • 4gb is not enough if you want to use a proper server file system like ZFS. 8 or even better 16GB ECC memory is a must.

        • +1

          @skyworxx: oops! I meant NAS.

        • @deepansh:

Even then. I am running FreeNas with 16GB ECC Ram for ZFS. That's just the amount of Ram you need for a redundant filesystem

    • If you buy the default 2GB offering, it will come with 1 DIMM slot free (allowing you to throw away the singular ECC card and buy 2 matching 4GB sticks), or do what I did (which was a bit cheeky / not advised) and have the standard 2GB stick alongside a non-matching 8GB stick.

If you buy the 4GB pack, chances are both DIMM slots will be taken up by 2x 2GB sticks. That said, this is more than enough for a linux server used purely as a NAS.

      • Edit: read your comment again. Would there be any problems with going 2+8?

        • Theoretically you should buy a matching pair.

My logic was: if the 2GB + new 8GB ECC stick didn't work together, I could always pull out the 2GB…

        • @daewoo: Oh I see. Is the one from shoppingexpress the only one you can use?

    • Seems to say it comes with only 2 GB, not 4 GB, for ~ $271

  • If i want to install Window Server, maybe with Hyper-V Server, how do i get started?

    • The cheapest way is to join the Windows Insider program: https://insider.windows.com/
You get access to the insider builds of Windows 10 Pro, which includes Hyper-V.
However, you are pretty much a guinea pig as Microsoft uses you to test updates. You cannot trust the machine with any critical (my insider install left me unable to log in at one point).
The best option is to get a license for Windows 10 Pro. The cheapest is if you can get access to the education version of Windows 10 Pro as a student or teacher.

      • Oh, i forgot about that.

But i was thinking about installing Windows Server on a Hyper-V server.

I was thinking about buying a licence somewhere that'll allow me to spin up some Server VM's…

    • The other option is to use VMware Fusion instead of Hyper-V, if you already have a non-pro Windows license you can use.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228054

  • Purchased one to replace my N40L, thanks OP!

    • +1

People often buy the iLO licences for around $30 on ebay.

  • +3

Anyone considering buying a NAS should be aware that until Feb Seagate have a buy 3 get 1 free promotion running for their NAS drives, when bought with 'an eligible QNAP, Seagate or Synology NAS'.

    http://seagatepromo.com.au/nashddpromo/

That obviously doesn't include HP, but it could affect your decision on what to buy.

    • +1

HP Microserver is more flexible than a standard NAS

  • the microservers are quite decent considering they can take 6 or 7 SATA internal drives

    6 * 4tb drives = 24tb storage straight up internally

  • Any good deals available on eBay for ECC RAM compatible with this system?

    • -2

dont bother with ECC ram, just stick 16gb ram in the bugger and away you go

      • Huh? I thought the Gen8 require ECC.

      • +1

You do need ECC but NON reg RAM. Be very careful there. You can buy the ECC and Reg RAM cheap, but the ECC and non Reg RAM is a lot dearer. This microserver is a lot fussier than the N40L. It needs ECC Ram. I tried the non ECC and it wouldn't boot past the POST screen.

        • -1

I have 8 or 9 of these at work.

You can put non-ECC RAM into them…

          Edit:

Non-ECC RAM is compatible, but not recommended for mission critical servers. Most casual, NAS or home server systems do not require ECC RAM
          http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Memory

        • @NGPriest:

The Gen8 is NOT the n40l. The n40l is the old Microserver with completely different hardware.

The Gen8 only takes unbuffered ECC memory afaik: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006YG8ZNI/ref=psdc_172500_t1_B008E…

        • -3

@scynaz: then you dont know much

        • If you goto http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/proliant-servers/product-d… and select Enterprise Memory…

          Then 10600 aren't ECC…

        • I'll check it when i get back to work…

        • +2

          @Makoto:

I really don't know why I bother. Read the links on this page: http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5639-proli…, around 20 posts by people who upgraded, ALL using unbuffered / unregistered ECC.

Plenty of posts about boot failure with non ECC modules.

That's about all the time I have for infantile bickering. Mod me down if you want.

        • @scynaz:

Thanks, I've got one of these on the way and I've been trying to figure out if I can upgrade the ram with non ecc ram.

        • +1

Non-ECC RAM will cause issues with the Gen8 servers. These unfortunately are not the same as the n40l (as I found out).

You can give it a go with non-ECC RAM but most likely it will not boot. Look up the link from scynaz for known compatible modules.

        • +2

          @NGPriest:
This actually looks like a website typo on the 10600 memory.

Check the part numbers on the site to the quick specs here http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04111…

You'll see the quickspecs show all the memory frequency and types as ECC, even the 10600 ones.

  • Very tempted at this price, but Gen 9 will probably be out soon.

    • Maybe. Maybe not. One thing is very likely, a new generation would cost a lot more when released.

      • That's why sites like Ingram Micro exist ;)

    • Just get it! It's not an iPhone. I can't think of a single feature that a Gen 9 could possibly have at a ~$300 price point that I need. The number of ways in which they could cripple upgradability is pretty endless - if you have ever used HP enterprise hardware you would know what I mean.

      • I was more thinking that it would get even cheaper with release of Gen 9. Warranty with HP/HPe is enough to convince me anyway.

      • Did you see the date on those posts?

      • Thanks for the links. I wasnt dismissing the existence of the Gen9 range - just the Gen9 microserver. 4 months after the rest of the range was announced, and still no sign of a new microserver..

I do stand by my thought that the Gen9, when it eventually arrives, will still cost a lot more than the current (very sharp) Gen8 price.. no matter if you buy direct from HP, from distys like Dicker Data or Ingram, or low margin resellers.

  • Have anyone have this server running Plex?

    1. I assume it will be able to stream 1080p content with ease?
    2. Can it handle at least 2 devices streaming 1080p content?

Ignore my question, the answer can be found here https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201774043-What-kin…
