Finishing 2 Year Virgin Mobile Contract Soon. Any Recommendations?

Finishing 2yrs contract within a week with Virgin Mobile (postpaid). Got Samsung S3 on $30 monthly plan that time.
There is absolutely no options from Virgin Mobile for $30 now.
We have another secondary number, family member on Virgin Mobile's Prepaid plan ( $19 SImple) where we have Unlimited Virgin to Virgin mobile calls and text.

With new contract :
- $30 PM (+$5 if needed)
- Prefer to have free calls and text within primary and secondary numbers.

Any recommendations?

  • I'm in the same boat with you and I am after 128gb iPhone 6s + and think that this time it might be wise to buy the phone and go with BYO plan.

I got my HTC M7 1 year and 9 months ago and changed phones about year ago already. Could not just imagine myself with an M7. Also my data is just 1.5G.

I am thinking that I don't want to lock myself for 2 years but get a 12 month plan like $40/month 5G from Telstra or 10G from Optus.

I still have few months to go to make my decision.

  • When my Virgin (x2) finished, we shopped around
    - one wanted to be on Optus still so we went with Amaysim 29.90 unlimited talk and text and 2GB data
    - my other phone we wanted Telstra 4g so we went with Boost mobile
440 per month - but you get 3GB "standard" data and an EXTRA 2GB EACH weekend for a total of 11GB a month. Totally worth the extra

Both are pre paid month to month plans so no lock in

  • My family just finished plans and I got them $25 unlimited local and international calls with 2GB of data. Let me know if you are after sth similar as I can help.

    • thanks, can you please share the details?

    • What company is that with? I'd be interested in that.

    • I'd like to know the details of this too, please.

  • I dont think thats possible any more.

Like for the past few years I would get into $35 2yr contracts, not unlimited calls but generous and you'd get a mid grade sort of phone.

I'm on a $30 'business' month by month and its unlimited text calls and 1gb? No phone of course but since I buy $129 Lumia 640s and have piles of decent phones I dont need that any more.

I dont think companies are willing to buy 'customer base' any more.

  • Vaya Mobile, $18 a month. Should do the trick. If you want a new phone get a OnePlus One/Two/X or something used that tickles your fancy.

    • Did you have any issues with them? I'm reading of a lot of issues on:

I would stay well clear. I had issues several times with incorrect billing, they claimed it was correct then admitted it was wrong when I threatened to go to the ombudsman.

Also had issues when I hit my cap 1 day before the end of a billing cycle. They automatically blocked usage and I was half way through the next cycle before I manages to get them to enable it again.

After dealing with them I decided never to go budget again on mobile providers, stick with the main networks is my advice, the savings aren't worth the pain.

        • Thanks for the feedback. I've been with Vodafone for many years now and their service improves every year. Never had an issue with billing before…

        • Stay WELL AWAY from those crooks at Vaya. Something very weird going on in that company but they are ripping people off and only back down when an ombudsman complaint is lodged. They should be investigated and shut down but there does not seem to be a process to do that.

        • Can only go on personal experience, but I moved from Optus to Vaya about 2 years ago and its been fine - no problems. Exactly the same network and allowance I had with Optus at a fraction of the price.

        • @Brianqpr:

For the most part it was fine, but as soon as anything went wrong it was an absolute nightmare. My partner is with Liveconnected, which is the same company. Same sort of issues I have heard, but thankfully, nothing has ever gone wrong on her plan.

      • Has the sale of Vaya to Amaysim gone through yet?
You'd think that'd clear up most of the dodgy tactics…

  • Same situation as well. Virgin prepaid simple $19 for my secondary. Wife's paid off post paid phone contract last month. Currently no good deal for phone plan - she does not need a new phone so hold on to Virgin - changed plan to no contract sim only $30 plan with unlimited calls and 1.5G data till I find another good deal,
Spoken to their CS, I called on day one after the contract end day, to avoid contract early termination fee for the last month.

    • thanks.
Wondering if your "sim only $30 plan with unlimited calls" includes any international calls?

      • yes. think it is $200 but check.

  • At the moment I pay $3.33 p. month for unlimited talk & txt & 5GB. Optus 4G.

    • thanks, can you please share the plan details?

      • Amaysim $10 for 3 months deal. When it expires I will return to my practice of activating new starter pack sims each month at an average $5 cost. I buy them when they go on sale, I have a stock of Optus, Telstra and Voda.

        • Just in case FYI

Here's one of the FAQ in AMTA website:
Question Is there a limit on the number of prepaid mobile services a customer can purchase?
          Answer
No. However a greater level of identification is required when a customer reaches 5 or more prepaid mobile services.
Note: ID must be produced for EACH prepaid mobile service that is purchased and a separate form filled in for each one.

        • @eatwell365: Well thanks for that, but it doesn't apply to me. I only have 1 prepaid service at a time, they are referring to having 5 prepaid services at a time. I port my number every month.

        • @eatwell365: I currently have about 20 Telstra sims (bought as cheap $30 starter pack deals) activated as I wanted to buy quite a bit on Google play all at one time..some more expensive books etc…no problems with that, all activated fine online with just licence number and address. To make it easier to use the credit I creditme2u all the recharge credit ($10/sim per day) to my main Telstra service where I know "telstra billing" is working and spend from there… enables larger purchases over and above the $30 of a single sim also. In the end the mobile service/data component is sort of forfeited though… so normally would only activate one sim per month and port my main number to it. Just that I wanted a lot of Google play credit all at once for holiday reading.

  • Their FB Rep offered me below option:

The LG G4 is available on our $30 Plan as well, but there is an $11 handset repayment, so the total monthly cost is $41. http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/G4?tab1=new-btn&tab2=btn…

Samsung Galaxy S5, we have this available on the $30 Plan with $8 handset repayments, so it would cost a total of $38/mo. Check out the info @ http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/Samsung-Galaxy-S5-White?…

  • What is the current feeling on Kogan mobile? They seem to have decent data offerings especially if you get a 3 or 12 month contract

Keep an eye on Optus. I picked up a deal in Nov through Clickfrenzy. A $40 month-to-month post paid deal that you get for 50% of for first 6months. So $20!
    - Unlimited calls to Oz
    - Unlimited Oz SMS and 32 countries
    - 150 minutes of calls to 32 countries
    -4Gb data
I have taken it on basis of changing to something else at the end of 6months. I'm not loyal to carriers.
Might have to port to Voda and back into Optus if they are offering good deals at that time because it's for new Optus customers only (OK to hop from Virgin).
Virgin is ok if you are a low user and all the family are on it. We had 8 in our family on Virgin, two on long life but most on simple.

  • Jeenee has $18 for 1.8GB (+300mins) and $25 for 2.5GB (+unlimited calls).

  • Telechoice have mobile phones + plans for $30 p/m:
    http://www.telechoice.com.au/phones-on-plans

Telechoice plans don't offer 4G but they do use Telstra's phone towers.

All the Oppo phones are noticeably faster than the Samsung S3.

Free calls from Telechoice-to-Telechoice. No free calls to Virgin. You could buy a pre-paid Virgin sim card and put it in the Samsung S3 to use as a 2nd phone for free Virgin to virgin calls. Though it might be better to switch all your family to Telechoice as their plans without handset start from $19 p/m.
