Been on Boost's $40 prepaid plan for almost 2 years and can't fault it. Apart from the fact there's no 4G offering, Telstra's 4G network & coverage is second to none, and Boost's customer service is great. This $20 plan will suit many down to the ground. Begins March 31.

Be careful of the 1MB data rounding.

ncluded data is charged in per MB increments and will be rounded to the nearest MB at the end of each data session.

    • +8

Isn't that only for the plan before 30 March 2015 ??

I read the website and it says the Recharge plan FROM 31 March 2015 onwards will be Charged per KB (YES! YES! YES!)

    • +1

They officially say per MB billing but anecdotally (from reading whirlpool posts) users see usage more consistent with per KB billing.

My wife used to burn through 1.5 GB regularly on Telstra post paid but seems to be doing ok on the Boost $40 plan.

    • +5

Be careful of the 1MB data rounding.

Hi scrimshaw. Even though Boost advertises MB rounding, it has been KB rounding since its inception. Plenty of discussion on Whirlpool on this very topic. Checking my data usage over certain sessions put my mind at ease ages ago.

      • Does this kind of thing explain why my credits run out quicker on Aldi than they did on Amaysim.

I'm so scared of having some app or other somehow utilise the 3g mobile and destroy my credits with Aldi, it happens all the time unless I turn 3g mobile off the very second I finish using it. No such problems with Amaysim.

Tempted to switch back to Amaysim but Telstra reception is generally better.

      • +2

Boost is advertising per kb charging:

        http://www.boost.com.au/$20-ultra-sim-prepaid-plan.aspx

        In the right hand table:

        "incl. data (charged per KB)"

    • what is a session?

      • +10

        Fun

        • fap fap fap

        • +3

Very funny. But what does telstra define as a session?

BTW, why is someone polishing their pole to your comment?

  • +14

100 minutes, ill burn those in 6 calls roughly

    • +1

I have to agree. 100 minutes really isn't much.

      • Average call is 2:30min

        • +11

          Depends on individual users.

I really don't want to go back to counting minutes again.

        • +1

          @leonheart1:

If not unlimiter, better than calculating $/call

  • +9

Again, can't beat Telechoice Kogan plans..

    • +1

Except they removed MMS. This is a much better offering compared to the current $20 kogan plan and you get the full Telstra 3G network….with the only major downside being the 100 minutes lol guess it depends how many calls you make

      • +2

How is this a much better offer?

you are getting almost 5x the call time on the same network with same data with Telechoice??

        • +3

Well to be fair it isn't the same network as boost has access to the full Telstra nextg network and resellers like telechoice and o use Telstra wholesale have the slightly smaller network

      • Does anyone MMS anymore? With so many online services, I've never sent one on Telechoice…

        • +2

sending a photo from iPhone to AndroidPhone and Vice versa = MMS

        • +4

          @Son ofa Zombie:

If you're clever about it you will just use email, or something like viber.

But yes, if you prefer to keep your data for other usage and send pictures, etc, this would be better.

I'm not fussed either way, currently on Telechoice but the rarely use half (if that) of the usage - benefits of free TC to TC to my wife.

        • +1

@Son ofa Zombie: Really? You don't use Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc?
If it's a business pics, I'll email it. Otherwise, it's going to some sort of social app..

        • +3

          @ryang:
I still use MMS and so does the wife. We have a newborn and a toddler so pics get sent all the time to the family. I use email too but MMS is a better option to avoid using my data allowance.
Too difficult to get the whole family using certain apps.

        • +6

@Son ofa Zombie: never heard of Whatsapp?

        • @ganymede: yeah, never saw what the attraction was about… what can it do that the standard iOS interface can't?

I used to have over 100 apps, now less than 20. Less the better.

I also only send about 20 pics a month which is included in the monthly bill anyway. Maybe not enough friends :(

        • +2

I don't use telchoice but my 72yo mother does and trying to teach her to use other apps for photos is just too hard in my experience. I'll be paying out her telechoice contract and switching Her to boost since sending photos of the grandkids is important to her.

    • +1

Depends if you value network coverage over call inclusions.
Boost's (Full NextG) network is geographically significantly larger than Telechoice's (restricted NextG), in the range of 100% greater area!

    • What a dumb comparison. Telstra's network coverage is far superior.

      • -1

        http://www.telechoice.com.au/help/signing-up-online/which-ne…

cough "TeleChoice uses part of Telstra 3G plus mobile network" cough

        • +2

The key word being "part". Telechoice doesn't use the full Telstra 3G network and therefore it isn't superior. May not be a big deal for people on the East coast, but it IS a big problem for people in remote WA, NT, QLD. Boost offers full Telstra 3G service and is therefore superior.

    • Telechoice Kogan is a 12 month plan though, right?

      This is prepaid.

  • +1

Last time I checked, international call rates were terrible. That's where Amaysim beats the others by a lot.

    • +1

Calling overseas, with a mobile network… I EXPECT to have my pants pulled down.

      • Not with Amaysim. Amaysim offers rates almost as good as my VoIP landline, and my VoIP phone is just about as cheap as it gets for overseas calls (it's why I have it).

        • Only time I ever had that was with OneTel, in the UK. I could be anywhere/anytime & call home for 2p/minute (5cents at the time), from my OneTel credit… regardless of my phone credit. BONKERS!

  • +1

Perfect plan for me as i rarely call, only used data and one gig should be enough. But damn im on virgin contract.

  • +1

It includes unlimited MMS, which is great for those who use it, but that 1mb session thingy could turn out to be a nightmare depending upon your location/movement/phone.

    • Can't go past this deal on your way to Timbuktu!

  • +1

    What is the bargain?

They have reduced the talk time from unlimited to 100 min while increasing the expiry from 15 to 30 days.

  • +3

You can get 4G by getting your SIM and activating, then head to a Telstra store and ask them to them to give you a Telstra SIM but keeping the Boost connection. My wife did it 2 weeks ago and now uses 4G on Boost =)

    • -5

      Is that legal?

      • +3

Why would it be against the law?

Telstra and Boost are on the same system. All they do is transfer the account to a Telstra SIM while retaining your account on Boost. Its a 10 second process.

        • +1

Giving that a whirl tomorrow. I did try this before by getting a sim from a T Shop and ringing boost and asking them to swap sims. Seems their backend systems flag the sim as Telstra and won't allow it. Giving it a go instore sounds like a plan….

        • +1

Don't ask for a blank sim to transfer later. Just have them do it in the Telstra shop. No need to waste time calling them =)

        • @reecho: let us know how it goes! would definitely be interested

        • +5

          @Cyphar:

Do you have to give them a reason as to why you are asking for that to happen? I presume they would ask wouldn't they.

        • @Cyphar:

Yes I would like to know what reason you could give for a new SIM too. Did you say the old one is broken? Also did it cost any money for your wife to get the Telstra SIM?

        • +4

Well after visiting 6 Telstra stores this morning i can safely say that it's not possible. Varying responses but all leading to the same result. Oh well wait to see what the brouhaha is with the $40 recharge.

        • @reecho:

My wife begs to differ! Im guessing you tried what I said in the PM amd it didnt work? That sucks

        • +2

@Cyphar: There you go, not everyone can get 4G with Boost. You/your wife are just lucky you able to get it to work. Yep those few idiots want to neg me when I asked "is that legal?" earlier.

        • +1

@Cyphar: Great success this morning… Now on full 4G. So it can be done still….just not at a Telstra shop or dealer….

        • @reecho:

Can you please IM me how it can be done without going to a store? I have heard it doesn't work instore anymore.
          Thanks in advance.

        • @reecho:

Yah, I'd be interested how this worked as well please

        • +2

          @reecho:

Im just happy you got it sorted :)

        • @PBG:
swap from nano to mini or vice versa

    • +1

Then you'll burn the 1GB in a day

      • +1

Sure, if you go downloading torrents all of a sudden. If you stayed under a gig on 3g, you will continue to do so if your internet habits dont change.

        • -5

          Netflix. Stan. Preston.
          .2o15.

        • @daver: Wifi.

    • would this work with the Telechoice deal, I believe they also use the telstra network?

    • +1

What do you mean by telstra sim but keeping boost connection? Really interested to know since I dont need more then 50min calls anyway and my phone supports 4gx

  • +2

This is on 3G telstra and much better than this deal http://www.lycamobile.com.au/en/super-saver-plan

    • -6

Hope you enjoy slow data and constant youtube buffering.

    • +1

Lyca don't have the same coverage as boost, they only have access to the "reseller" towers wheareas Boost have access to the full telstra network. You'll notice many country town on Lyca offering only 2G coverage (such as Paraburdoo in WA) whilst they get full 3G on Boost.

  • +1

Waiting to see what the pending changes to the $40 plan are that they alluded to in their text message.

  • +2

I wish i could neg this.
Boost sucks removing the addons and the two handy lower price recharge.

    • +1

why don't you neg it then?

      grow some balls.

Here, I will give you a neg to get you started. now take your rage out on this deal.

      • -4

cause as much as i and others dislike the change this isnt so bad just not suitable for me.

        troll elseware plz.

        • -3

not trolling. just like to see men being men.

  • +2

Hmm i thought calls to 1300 / 1800 are supposed to be free on mobiles these days.

If you use up your 100 minutes, you can purchase a new $10 Add-on, you'll also be able to use your $10 Add-on credit to make standard national calls, for MessageBank® retrieval, and calls to 1300/1800 numbers all for only 10c per minute (charged per minute) with no flag fall.

  • +2

Lyca Mobile is $20 a month for unlimited calls and unlimited SMS with 5gb data on the Telstra 3G network and they will send you a sim for free. Beat that..

    • +2

      That's really good.

    • +3

Lots of Chinese whispers on here they will jack up price after a month or so back to their $29.99 rate.

      • +5

If theyre like any other cheap rate MVNO
they'll be constantly trying to screw you and then you'll spend a pleasant 5 hours on the phone with music designed to drive you insane (and off the phone!) after they've helpfully ignored your emails.

        Yada, Yada …

        TIO

But I can live in hope till it happens with Lycamobile I guess.

        • How are you suprised that $20/mo on Lyca doesn't include quality customer service?

I'm with Lyca on the $20 deal and sure it took 20 minutes to settle something that should've taken 5 but I've probably saved about $80 so far by being with them since I swapped over from Amaysim.

I'm with Lyca because I can live without:
free international iPhone's UK SMS verification server
          MMS
          13/18

          because I get:
          unlimited calls/texts
          free voicemail
          1300/1800 numbers

My next choice would be Lebara (warning though it's on Vodaphones network)
          http://www.lebara.com.au/national-unlimited
You get what you miss out on with Lyca and you can lock in $300 for a year contract which equates to $25 a month.

My work mate managed to keep his $2 a day optus unlimited when it included unlimited internet and doesn't need a home phone or adsl.

    • Thanks I'll check that out

    • Really?? Holy hell.

    • +11

The Deputy Commissioner is seeking to wind up Lycamobile's operations in Australia, just over three years after the UK global mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) launched in Australia.

The notice of application for an order to wind up Lycamobile was published on the Australian Securities & Investment Commission's website earlier this month, with a hearing scheduled in the New South Wales Supreme Court for March 20.

The company first launched in Australia in November 2010, operating on Telstra's 2G network, offering cheap calls and texts to a number of international locations where Lycamobile operates.

Last year, the company found itself before the Federal Court on claims that it had underpaid its employees by AU$28,000 in total over several months in 2011. Around 12 of the workers were foreign nationals employed to sell prepaid mobile SIMs and recharge vouchers, with many on varied types of visas, and all paid a flat rate of AU$15 per hour.

The Federal Court handed Lycamobile a fine totalling AU$59,400 for the underpayment of employee wages in February 2013.

In 2013, Lycamobile also got caught up with the Australian Communications and Media Authority over a failure to provide accurate customer data to the Integrated Public Number Database (IPND) Manager that is used by Australian emergency services.

ZDNet has attempted to contact Lycamobile, but no response has yet been received. The company's website is still active; however, its Facebook page has been removed. The company's call centre is still active, but staff were unaware of the application for the wind up order.

Telstra's promotional video highlighting Lycamobile's use of Telstra's wholesale 2G network has also been removed from YouTube.

A spokesperson for Telstra declined to comment.

      http://www.zdnet.com/article/wind-up-order-sought-for-austra…

      • +1

Definitely worth noting ATO's intentions and that the Federal Court fined Lyca in 2013 for underpaying staff. The article you quoted text from listed a host of other sins.

It's also worth noting though, that the article is more than a year old, and the Supreme Court hearing relating to the wind-up order was March 20 last year.

It's a demonstrably flawed operation, but Lyca's not facing court in three weeks with the prospect of being ordered to stop business, as it would appear from your quoted text.

      • The zdnet article you posted is dated Feb 2014 with the winding up hearing set for March 2014. It is now almost a year to the date so obviously they have not wound up for some reason or other.

    • Not the same coverage on Lyca vs Boost. I can 3G on Boost but not on Lyca, check Paraburdoo in WA!

  • +7

Boost have been having some serious issues as of lately with messages not being delivered, they don't seem to care..

    • +2

Source? Personally, I've never had any issues.

      • +5

looks like from about here onwards: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2255160&p…

been happening to me for the past few days too :(

        • +3

Can confirm, anyone I message on boost/Telstra is ok, anyone I message on any other network it like playing Russian roulette…

        • +6

@pegaxs: pretty sure you mean just roulette.

        • +13

@Son ofa Zombie: trust me, when you send a message to your wife saying you will be home a little late and sit there hoping to God she got the message, it is a lot like Russian roulette… :D

        • @pegaxs: On the other hand, if you forget to send the message in the first place, you've got a great excuse.

    • Atleast you guys get notices. I lost a fortnight worth of calls and messages when Boost decided they wanted to change my displayed carrier from Testra to Boost.

    • +2

Huh, I thought it was my handset. Been happening to me the past few days too.

    • +2

thought it was my phone (I'm on virgin mobile), though only seems to happen for some numbers

    • +1

I'm on the Telechoice KM $20 plan and I've also been experiencing the inconsistent SMS deliveries. In case that helps anyone (maybe it's a Telstra network thing, rather than just Boost?).

      • Me too! Thought it was my handset or use of a 3rd party SMS app. I'm with Telechoice kogan $20 offering. I wonder whats happening?!

      • +1

Can't say I've experienced it, but there's a few on Whirlpool reporting the same issue as you in QLD and NSW

    • I have had that issue in past too and they said all is good at their end.I think it is an ongoing issue.

  • +2

    IMO - Jeenee are running a better deal. $25 month/1.5gb Data/$500 calls/Unlimited Text/KB Billing/Optus 4g/Free setup up until 31st March (Saving $20 on SIM card)

    • +10

Bleargh… You lost me as soon as I read optus…

      • +26

Well I had you for over half of the message, so that's something.

        • +1

If 50% coverage is deemed good… You might be with Optus.
