Continued from Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2008-2016

Please make any suggestions for new features, bugs, things you'd like to see changed or anything else. Also feel free to start a new thread in Site Discussion. If it's a little issue perhaps use this thread, if it's a big issue then perhaps start a new thread. Please see the wiki below as your suggestion may already have been mentioned.

The majority of things you see as well as policies on OzBargain were implemented based on user feedback.

    • Fixed. Looks like PricePal's new SSL certificate was throwing error.

  • Idea: Ability to search travel destinations by specific cities by making OP's who post flight deals to selcet the applicable airport/country/city in a drop-down list.

When posting a flight deal, there should be a new drop-down list that allows you to select the relevant cities/country that are mentioned in the deal. So if there's a IWTF deal that has a cheap flight to Singapore and Los Angeles, the poster would have to select that in the drop-down list. It shouldn't be too difficult to add since I'm sure there's a generic drop-down list that you could find on the internet that would have a full list. Maybe it'd be easier if the poster would have to select the correct airport just like how sites like Momondo and IWTF work. So if there is a potential user who wants to travel to Singapore, they could type it in and it would show all the past and present deals so they can gauge what a good price would be. It would make it easier to sift through all the flight deals.

    Well done :)

But no puns?! Let me down guys!

  • If a forum topic is locked after a few hundred comments, should it fall off the Hot Discussion list?

    • +1

It will eventually… Hot Discussion list on the front page looks at the number of comments posted over the last 2 days (and 14 days for the Hot discussions page).

Was wondering if we can allow users to revoke their "reports" to the mods in deals/forums? Majority of the time I have found that the OP themselves have corrected what was initially wrong after members identifying it in the comments, for example correcting the title before the mods had the opportunity to. Rather than the mods being drowned with reports for something that has already been fixed, we can allow them to save time and effort to respond to each individual report by users revoking their report if it is no longer needed and has been fixed? :)

    • Great suggestion.

    • It's probably fine. We go through them fairly quickly if its a simple issue like correcting a title. Also some of us get email notified so we'd still see the report even if it were theoretically possible to revoke.

    • +1

Haha yep. Also don't get the point of users reporting a deal as dupe or expired like 10 times if it just spams the mods with emails

  • Facebook screenshot here doesn't look good ;)

    • We can't change the image on Facebook without deleting the post.

I think it'd be nifty if there was a counter, so I could see how much of my life I waste on this site. Like they have in steam.

    You have wasted 8999 hours

  • My email notifications seemed to be delayed. This has happened to a lot of notifications but only over the last couple of days.

    • Let us know if it continues reguarly now that traffic is back to normal, beyond a few minutes delay.

      Thanks

      • Yeah it's happened quite a few times today but yeah seems like it's just cos of the traffic. The email notifications weren't specific for the GB thread jfyi btw.

        • Alright thanks, I haven't seen any delays more than a couple minutes on email notifications recently. It might be something going between us and the mail provider you are using delaying our emails going through, someone else yesterday reported a similar issue and they are also using the same email provider as you are.

        • @hamza23:

they are also using the same email provider as you are

Hmm yeah could be due to that. I just got another delay. But then I got one on time afterwards. The majority are on time.

        • Update:

Hmmm I don't think it's my email provider as I just got another delayed notification to a thread for comments which were posted before I auto-subscribed after commenting.

        • @CVonC: All I can say is that your email provider is pretty bad, and our SMTP relay currently have ~2800 emails waiting in the queue that cannot be delivered to that email provider. SMTP logs ask us to "retry after 4 hours" which is probably what caused the delay.

        • @scotty:

Hmm yeah I don't doubt that. I just realised that it wasn't before I auto-sub'd as I actually sub'd manually before commenting last night. My bad.

Would me auto-subscribing and manually subscribing to a heck of a lot of threads have anything to do with it?

        • +1

@CVonC: Well. The issue is that the entire domain is throttling our email server's delivery so it might not be much help. Everyone on that email domain are having delayed delivery.

  • Top Cashback isn't showing.

    • Which store? TopCashback does not provide us an API so we have to scrap their site…

      • I see, some are showing. GearBest doesn't have it.

        • Sure I'll add that and it should appear tomorrow morning after the refresh.

        • @scotty: thanks, another one to add is Asos.

  • Hi,

Yesterday i received an email from GoCatch that they have suspended my account due to illegally giving out referral codes (this was from my submission of this deal which generated me $400 in referral credit) I wanted to start a thread on what actions I could take but I did not want it to appear on Google search or for public view…Therefore, Is it possible to have a setting to turn a Forum post to member only view?

    Cheers

    • Off-Topic Forum. Interesting, just checked mine and still seems to be intact with credit.

  • Feature Request: Ability to favourite (save for later / wishlist) a post

If I like a post, I should have an option to refer back to it quickly at some point. Especially if I want to to use a coupon code that is mentioned in the post or something like that. At this point, it is a tedious process to go through my Recent Activities or search for the deal and scroll through the results. If a post comes through during an event like click frenzy or an ebay sale, it makes it even harder to find the deal I want to get to.

Also, I might like n-number of deals in a week, but I would want to personally make use of a handful of them. So this would be a further refinement to the like/voted history.

    • Save it too your favorites folder.

      • +1

        @nocure, @neil, awesome. Ta

    • As nocure said, this feature is already there.

      From the FAQ:

You can do so by clicking the Bookmark link located at the bottom of each deal, forum, or comp post. Please see this blog post for instructions.

  • Just noticed that the "tag" option is missing from the search menu bar, still shows on ChoiceCheapies site.

    • +1

I'll have a look. We did a bit of optimisation on user permission this week (due to heavy load on the OzBargain10 event) so some permission might have been turned off.

    • +1

      Fixed.

      • Thanks Scotty.

  • For store reps (and maybe all posts), should it be mandatory for the poster to list at least one/several items that are cheaper than anywhere else?
Lately I'm seeing posts whose gist is: 30% off! Here click this link to go to my site. kthxbye.

    • That would make things more complicated. If a Rep posted a deal for local but it's cheaper at a 'grey' import site would it count as cheaper? If it's cheaper at a dodgy retailer and the Rep if posting for a not-so dodgy retailer would it count as more expensive?

      • True, lets just say they have to post a specific example of the "bargain", and members can decide via +/- votes whether the price and store reputation makes it worthwhile to buy.

Its just that sometimes my deal feed starts to resemble whats in my physical junk mail .. 20-30% discounts being offered but nothing actually 'cheap'

        • I think that when a post like that gets a couple of negs it disappears? so if a couple of users s it then it shouldn't be on your deal feed.

    • While I agree with the sentiment, regular users don't even post items. We have to constantly edit titles or worse go through and list items ourselves. There is a distinction through.

If the deal is Up to 30% off @ Acme Co. with no examples then we generally will unpublish, no matter who posts it. If it is 30% off @ Acme Co. then we will keep it. The first may only have 1 item at 30% off where in the latter everything will be 30% off.

For example, Black Friday: 20% off Everything @ ASOS (Free Shipping with $40 Spend, Free Returns) doesn't have examples but it's 20% off everything.

      Relevant Deal Posting Guideline

  • +1

Today must be getting close to a deal posting record.

  • Hi there,

I was wondering if we could have a weekly newsletter?

I see we only have daily newsletter, but for people like me that don't have time to check our private email everyday, would be very handy to have a weekly newsletter.

I know, some or maybe most of the deals would be expired, but would be ideal to have just once a week.

    Thanks

    • +1

What would you want in the weekly newsletter? As you said most good deals would have expired. You could also set yourself a reminder to visit the Popular Deals page once a week…

      • Exactly the same thing as the daily newsletter - able to select "exclude expired deals" and categories plus forum topics - but instead of the top10 of that day it would be the top 10 (perhaps even more, 15 or 20) for that week.

Just so you can understand a bit more of the background of my request (maybe more people in this situation) I was subscribed for the daily newsletter, but was always a burden on the weekend to go through 7 daily newsletter to see the good deals of that week.

I hope we could get a weekly option as well.

        Thanks Scotty.

        • +1

One week… better be prepared for disappointment! :)

        • @eug:
          Why disappointment? Explain more…

        • +2

@ricdam: As scotty mentioned, most good deals would have expired by then. You'll then just read a list of bargains you missed out on.

    • +1

As scotty said, just bookmark this page and check it once a week…?

Given all the daily entry comps on right now (12 days of Christmas etc), can we organise a tag and event page maybe to highlight these separately? Because there's a fair few right now, and might be a good thing to show that, and brings more attention to the comp section overall

    • Shame this seems to have been missed. Probably too late to sort it now

    • Not so much missed but this requires a bit of programming as currently the comps don't have tags nor can we currently list non-deals on tag/event pages. Maybe a forum post and we can sticky or something?

  • Given negs are anonymous, can there be a statistic on our profiles showing how many deal and comment negs we make. Either overall, or for the week/month. I think it would be a useful way for each user to assess the value of a neg, which at present I give nil value to.

    • For clarity, only negative comment votes are hidden. They serve a purpose of not only giving the community the power to revoke a negative deal vote but when a comment is negative voted highly, it is hidden to guest users (non-logged in).

Currently, you can see all the individual competitions and deals you positively voted for in My Account - voted. In My Account - statistics, you will find all the counts of which stores/domains you positively vote on most.

Are you interested in negative votes you receive on comments or negative votes on comments you give to others (or both)?

      • Thanks Neil , I want to know who are the prolific neg voters on comments. So a public statistic of how many comment negs a user gives each week/month/ever.

        • OK, it could be an interesting stat but I think there may be an expectation of privacy in terms of identifying users who neg comments. Maybe I can present it as an anonymised stat in the monthly stats post. The other thing is that negative comment votes are capped at 5 per 24 hours. So the most a user can do in a week is 35 and monthly 150/155.

Is there anyway in the code that you can make it that when someone adds a referral link, and subsequently gets a referrer tag, that it checks if they're an L or P plate poster and actually stops them from posting/changing the post?

    • Moderators do get a report when L/P plater posted a referral link so we can evaluate whether it's a spam or just some silly unintended mistake.

      • Saves a report though :)

        • +2

Instead we might get a TWAM "why can't I edit the deal?!!!" — more work for us :P

  • +2

Can I suggest an "Alcohol" category? Certain communities/underage may want to exclude it in their feeds.. I don't want to be tempted when searching for food !

  • The Coles online surcharge makes the full price of items confusing. Deals often say better than half price when it isn't the case as I learnt in store today. I think we should list the normal RRP which can be found in store at Coles or online on the Woolworths website

    Examples
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282256 actually $11.00
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282239 actually $2.90
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/276651 actually not really

    • Coles has different pricing depending on where it detects your location.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282256 actually $11.00

      $5.50 in Victoria

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282239 actually $2.90

$3.19 in Victoria. That definitely was $1.25 in NSW so likely that has expired.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/276651 actually not really

$14.85 in Victoria. That's been marked expired as the poster was in VIC>

      • Thanks for the reply. To clarify I was quoting the RRP

        • Ah OK, sorry I misunderstood.

In this week's VIC catalogue it is $11 as regular price, so good pickup on seeing that. Looks to be the same "normal price" in all states. Catalogue prices (aka in-store prices) should probably be the one referenced rather than online.

        • +1

          @neil:

Members could add a notation Half priced based on instore price but it would get too wordy in the title.

Most OzBargain members wouldn't pay the full price total when ordering online from Coles anyway.

        • @neil: Sweet, thanks. Appreciate the speedy clarifying even at this hour!!

  • Any way of making it that a coupon works with spaces?

Like this one, if we could enter it as "HAPPY NEW YEAR" (notice the "s) to stop it from separating the words to different coupons?

    • +1

I'll think about it. Also don't want the next person asking for coupon codes that can include double-quote signs :)

      • Also don't want the next person asking for coupon codes that can include double-quote signs :)

        It'll never happen :P

Why not just scrap the space separation? Have it as only a comma?

And no, no one will have a comma in a coupon code :P

  • +1

Apologies if this has already been raised and dismissed…

Can we please get a probationary period applied to posting in forums? That is, if you join, you need to wait 30-90 days before you're able to post in forums.

Thinking this might (hopefully) minimise the over-dramatic, overly-capslocked, "SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!" postings where people join simply to get some shit off of their liver and/or stir the pot.

I'm not talking a restriction on deal posting, just posting new forum topics.

    • +2

Inappropriate accusations should be reported, rather than having a blanket ban on all new users. I think it is fine for people to share their experience with retailers / service providers in the forum. However calling someone a scam is quite a heavy accusation and should be avoided. Yes, report away and the mods can fix up the title & content.

Moreover it's not just the new accounts writing over-dramatic forum posts.

      • Fair call, cheers for the feedback. :D

  • Is there any option to save a deal as a draft for later editing/submission? I could do this using a text editor locally, but having it stored online would be useful.

  • Why is Top Cashback UK banned, can get payout into PayPal.

    • The one and only deal posted November 2015 was requested by the OP to be removed with the message:

THE PAYMENT WILL ONLY BE MADE VIA BACS WHICH MEANS ONE MUST HAVE A UK ACCOUNT FOR THE DEAL TO WORK. MODS PLEASE REMOVE THE DEAL.

It appears now you can get payouts in gift cards and Paypal.

      We've now removed the block.

      • thanks :)

  • Why is the Blog not linked to anywhere besides social media?
No links in the menu up top, nothing in the wiki (at least as far as I can see)

Could it not be under 'Pages'? Or even have it's own tab up top?

I get that the posts are infrequent, but it just seems it's a wasted effort if it hides in obscurity 99% of the time

    • It's on the footer but not on the mobile site. Probably need to make more posts to warrant it anywhere else but most site posts go on the forum and everything else just goes on social media.

      • Ah so it is, but who really looks down the bottom?! :P

I just think it should be under 'Pages' at least :)

  • @scotty View all comments error

When scrolling down and clicking 'View All' it is linked to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/undefined/comments which 404's

    • It should be fixed in the next update.

  • Cashrewards cashback is showing for Harvey Norman deals. Shouldn't this be restricted to Harvey Norman B&E only?

    • +1

It should. Cashrewards provides us a feed linking the store to HN. I'll fix it up when we import the data.

  • +2

Can we have a voting system for forum posts? The quality of new posts is questionable and it would be great to filter out negative posts.

  • @scotty

Could you please check this as it's still auto removing Credit Savvy referral links, if you could remove all detection for it.

    Thanks

    • That should be fixed.

  • It's a month into 2017 and I think it's probably a good idea to start a new post for general feedbacks on OzBargain.
