Continued from Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2008-2016

Please make any suggestions for new features, bugs, things you'd like to see changed or anything else. Also feel free to start a new thread in Site Discussion. If it's a little issue perhaps use this thread, if it's a big issue then perhaps start a new thread. Please see the wiki below as your suggestion may already have been mentioned.

The majority of things you see as well as policies on OzBargain were implemented based on user feedback.

        • We already have related forum topics (and classifieds) on a product page, in your example there is the heading 'Related Forum Topics' on the right hand side with forum posts with the 'Xbox Live Gold' tag.

I think that is what you meant?

        • @hamza23:

Oh right yep didn't see it, too far away :P

  • I just checked out cheapcheaplah and fell in love with the colour theme. Unless I missed something obvious, there is no way to change OzBargains theme is there?

I may have to move to Singapore otherwise.

    • Sorry it seems moving to SG is the only way at the moment :) there will also be some theme redesign across the board later this year.

    • You could use an add on such as 'stylish' to put your own CSS on top of the site's CSS. But it could be fiddly still.

    • That looks like someone copied theme of ozbargain and changed the colour lol.
Edit: Realised that is made by scotty as well :)

      • Check out the "Network" section in the page footer. Scotty's taking over the world!

        • haha. yes, I did and also posts all over from scotty, neil and other mods. I had the page open, but surprised to see 0 members and 0 guests. I Was not treated even as a guest there ;)

    Good evening,

There have been quite a few posts that are for a specific location or a national retailer that only has stock at a specific location. Would it be possible (probably not easy) to geo-tag a deal post, and based on your own location you can filter out deals where there's no availability within x kilometers?

    • +1

Geo-tagging / Google Map integration is certainly something that has been planned for a while. Got sidetracked and never implemented :( I'll see whether I can resurrect the bits and pieces this year.

      • I imagine that a site with the size/traffic of OzBargain would exceed the rate limits for the free API access tier? If it's going to cost anyway, could I suggest you take a look at Foursquare as well as the Google Maps Premium Plan API access? In my personal opinion the quality of the dataset is better, if the price is going to work out the same anyway…

(EDIT: sorry, this kinda applies if you want to be able to select a specific business from an existing database, rather than just stick a set of GPS co-ordinates on a page and/or build your own dataset). But still pretty sure some API rate limits still apply even if you're just embedding a map on your site and using your own dataset.

  • Has anyone else noticed/been annoyed by the change to the time display on the 'Live' page?

Previously it would detail how many minutes since a deal with published only for a few hours, and then it would actually say the time the deal was published (great for doing an overnight catch up, or seeing what you missed as it has scrolled off the page).

Now I need to do a mental calculation trying to remember when last night I checked the deals being posted, so find it a little frustrating.

Is there any way to revert the display?

    • We do it as part of the recent timezone change. The timestamp on the live page is calculated on the browser side which might not match the user's timezone preference, so we decided to just use relative time for an easier implementation.

No, we will not revert to previous implementation.

      • I didn't necessarily ask whether you'll revert it to previous, or even if it was something intended, but thank you for your answer through your cheery Monday morning disposition Scotty for the answer anyway.

  • So i like the pages tab, but it takes over the link to the wiki site. I can't find any other link to the wiki now though. Is that right?

    • Currently clicking on Pages will get you to wiki. However I'll add a new wiki link there.

      • Oh wowwww, can't believe i didn't even try that. All good!

  • A very minor issue under Ozbargain Tips. The eBay cashback rate is incorrect.

Go to Deal button to see cashback offers available for that retailer (e.g. eBay's 2% cashback or Groupon's 5.6% cashback). More….

    • Thanks fixed.

  • Is it me, or did the size of the banner in notification emails suddenly become massive?

    • +1

Not just you. Update this morning replaced the banner logo with one that's 2x the width/height, but scaled down for the website (which would look nicer on high DPI screens like phones/tablets). However newsletter does not do the scaling.

    • Just one two-comment notification email now contains 50% of your RDI for Vitamin C.
This has been Brandpower for OzBargain Nutrition Facts.

  • Just a suggestion,
maybe if we can add an option in the Polls to add a title, as it may confuse people what the poll is asking.

Since the Body of the post separates the title and the options hence can be confusing.

Unless we already have this option and I'm an idiot.

    i.e.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239342

    • That's a good suggestion. I usually

Bold the sentence right above it.

but would make sense to have the question included in the poll.

    • You already have a title for your post "How Far Do You Begin to Contemplate Driving or Riding to The Train Station?" then you also added this right above the poll:

      So the Poll question is:
How Far Do You Begin to Contemplate Driving or Riding to The Train Station?

      It's more than enough.

      • Yes but for other people the Title does not necessarily have to be the question for the Poll.
It also makes it easier for if we ever have a long post.

  • +1

Would be nice to see our total number of positive up votes on comments over our time on here.

  • It's been bothering me for a while that I can't filter out products. OzBargain seems to go through phases of products, Eneloops, Galaxy phones, Nexus 6P, micro SD cards etc.. If I could hide those deals the same way I could hide stores would be awesome. And on the flip side be able to subscribe to email updates for products the same way we can stores too. Unless these are possible and I just don't know it?

    • Filter out product — not possible.

Subscribe to product — try search alerts for now.

  • Can you have the new 1 classified post per 24 hour limit mentioned in the Classifieds Posting Guidelines on the right hand side? I got caught out by out and it will help newer users of classifieds to prioritize classified postings.

    • Done.

  • I have noticed two incidents recently where a user has requested the removal of their comments.

In both instances the initial comment was used to get an inflammatory response/attack the deal/user.

I am wondering why does the site allow removal of comments if its not defamatory? I know in some instances there is justification for removal but some users are abusing it imo

At the very least the responses that follow should remain, so that the Ozbargain community can get an idea what the initial comment was.

      • If someone requests to remove their own comment, in the majority of cases, we remove the comment ( you can also do it yourself within a few minutes of posting).
        • Exceptions of removal would be when there are useful conversations that would assist other members especially ones with many replies. In those cases, we would ask the commenter what they would like to edit out.
      • When comments are removed, all replies are removed as well. Leaving the replies and missing the original comment makes the conversation too difficult to understand. This is also why a comment is locked after someone replies to it, so someone doesn't respond to a comment that has been changed.

Not sure if you got inflammatory and defamatory mixed up. Defamatory remarks would mean saying untrue statements about someone. In courts, they may award money if you can prove that because you were defamed you lost business or reputation etc. (I'm not a lawyer so that's the best I can do.) [We've been sent legal threats with defamation mentioned].

Inflammatory remarks would be what most people would know as trolling. Saying something in order to elicit a negative response from someone else.

Looking at your history, I think I know what comment you are referring to and the commenter requested removal and it was granted.

      • I haven't got inflammatory and defamatory mixed up.

My argument is that only defamatory should be allowed to be removed for legal reasons.

I believe the comments I have seen removed from my time on here where used to send a message to another user. After they have got the intended reply, they remove it so they don't get hate from other users. This to me seems to be playing the rules and protecting their online image.

      • Also can I report the removed comment in retrospect - just because it has been removed does not mean it did not cause offense.

        • Also can I report the removed comment in retrospect - just because it has been removed does not mean it did not cause offense.

If something isn't published whether a deal, forum post, competition post, or comment, you can not report it. Just start a TWAM and explain the issue.

  • Pls raise the store block limit to 500. So far if I add any more than 40, the box keeps unticking itself.

  • Just had 2 issues/questions:

    • How do I link to a username on the site in a comment? I tried @username and [@username] but there was no auto hyperlink.

    • I was browsing the new deals page of ozbargain on a private session (logged out) and noticed one or two deals that did not appear in my new deals feed even after being refreshed. I checked my excluded categories, stores, tags etc under settings but I have not changed anything. Can anyone figure out why that might be happening? These are 20+ votes too and were on on the front page once logged in either.

    Thanks

    • +1

No auto-hyper link for username. As you can have <space> in usernames, I found using @ to prefix a username does not really work. For now you need to use the full Markdown syntax to link. For example

      [@fryandlaurie](https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/61040)

      Gives me @fryandlaurie.

As of missing deals — give an example? There are a few reasons why a deal does not appear for non-logged in users. For example flagged by moderator as NFSW. Or new deals that not yet in the cache.

      • Thanks for clearing up the username syntax. Makes sense.

As for the deals not appearing I observed this deal yesterday for eg: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/240745 that never came up on my new deals page when logged in. Right now this deals appears in new deals when logged out (private tab): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/240811 but not when logged in. Here are my settings: https://i.imgur.com/62Ff0WL.png

        • You have Uploaded Files in the blocked list. So any deal that had a picture uploaded to OzBargain will be blocked.

        • @neil: Thank you. That did the trick. Can't believe I didn't see that before. Here I was thinking there was some sort of malware on my browser.

  • How about a report button on deals that are out of stock or expired for things that are back in stock our have unexpired.

    • You can use the report link for items that are in stock, out of stock, or anything else you want to report. They all go to the same place and we have to read each one. If you have already reported the deal, just pick a comment in the deal to report.

      • A few days after this deal was expired I noticed that it began working again. When I clicked the report button it came up with options like out of stock, expired or duplicate. It would be nice if after a deal had expired that changed to unexpired and back in stock so I could report that that deal was working again.

        • +1

At the bottom of that list will be "other"..Then just enter a comment in the text box.

  • +1

Has Ozbargain looked into displaying a cumulative counter of lifetime comment +ves/-ves? And a separate one for lifetime +ve/-ves for deal posts?

On the user profile page, or the mini pop up when you click on someone's name? I think that would be fun.

  • Random question here, but how is it determined which mods do the graveyard shift on here? Obviously you're all on the clock, so is it treated like shift work?

Just curious lol I understand there's surely gaps in the moderation. I definitely wouldn't put my hand up for moderating the site at 3am if I wasn't getting paid for it :P

    • +1

Most moderators are paid staffs here. Also working hours are "flexible". Some of us are early risers, and sometimes mods chat online one hour pass midnight.

However usually no one is around at 3am.

  • may have already been mentioned.

can we have a feature to show all the comments on one page for easy searching.

    similar to whirlpool
    https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/wp_largethreads

    • +1

      Already implemented :)

For example see thread here, up the top you have View > Revisions > Comments. Click comments :)

      • good to know. thanks

  • I was wondering whether changes to deal titles have ever been considered. We often need to squeeze a lot of things in too little space to make it meaningful and compliant. Some deals require longer-than-usual titles for relevant info (for instance, I would like to add the normal annual fee to this deal, but can't), yet titles are already very long to read as it is. New posters often forget to include relevant information in titles, such as merchant or price.

Perhaps some details, such as [merchant][location] could be moved to a pro-forma "tag-like" subtitle? Even price could be shown as a coloured label next to the main title (for deals where a single price is applicable). I just think that some of information, while relevant, need not be in the main title, but could be shown smaller underneath. Perhaps in the case of multiple bargains per deal, there could be a list under each title, rather than enumerating them all in the title as is currently the case.

Merged from Sort Comments Feature Like Reddit

    Hi,

It'll be great if there's this feature. There would be a default sort, and you can choose to sort to new, top voted, old.

    • First of all, pointless to add a poll in the original post. "Can I have this feature" and most people would like to have it, especially when it's "free".

Secondly this has been asked a few times before. Yes that would be an interesting feature to have, but no, we do not have priority to implement this.

      • Hey Scotty,

Would gify be considered in the future?

Perhaps make it smaller/ only allowed on the original post of new deal?

        • +3

No. April Fools Day was a few days ago & it's time to move on :)

        • @scotty: :'(

It was very popular, it might encourage more people to post deals!

        • @GameChanger: Indeed popular. From what I have observed it did encourage people to post deals random off-topic blurbs.

        • @scotty: hahah yeah so many new 'faces' well lurkers finally posted some comments.

      • Can it be a little present for Christmas due to all of our request? Can our wish be granted? Like with cherry on top?

  • I think mods/admin should still be able to have their comments voted on, but only a pos vote (same as when a store rep votes in their own deal, they can't neg vote). So the community can say thanks, without actually commenting :) There's been countless times where an upvote as thanks seemed the right thing to do, but we can't.

    • Appreciated but I think it would look tyrannical to some users that mod comments can receive + votes but no - votes, meaning that every comment we make appears positive but that might just be because there is no other option. Best just to keep it neutral.

  • HEY, this idea is actually so brilliant! Since the free Reddit gold membership pouring out, I have come up with an idea to have Ozbargain membership that has better features than Reddit. So features I thought of:

    Features:

    • If you are a gold member, you can view deals a day or something earlier than non-subscribers (The OP can obviously see the deal). This is a massive feature, big advantage for the members who want to get a head start on liquidated deals like DS recently, anything special, things like that.
    • OP can get rewarded for posting a deal if it reaches past say 10+, and may get more rewards the more positive they recieve. Reward can be a member subscription
    • We can have secret, exclusive deals, an appreciation for being a gold member
    • There might be a lounge forum only for members
    • Membership can be just a little bit per month but big entitlements. The money can be used as investment on this site, maybe can add features on Ozbargain that the community unanimously voted for, to give rewards back to the community. Win-win.
    • This site has grown so much, the community is getting bigger, more deals are contributed. So I don't see why not there should be membership.
    • +2

I don't think that's the direction scotty wants Ozbargain to go. It's basically making Ozbargain a premium site by paying to see content first etc.

None of the other big bargain websites do it and it would probably kill the community.

  • +1

Bit of discussion here, but is there a way of having a 'wall of shame' so to speak? Even if it's just a list of banned stores and the reasons as shown on the store page? I looked but couldn't see such a list on the wiki. Probably only applicable for perma-banned stores

    • It needs to be more than just a list — 2000+ domains are banned for various reasons. Some are due to repeated sock puppeting, some sell illegal stuff, some are just URL shorteners or dodgy affiliate sites. In fact we rarely ban a site due to bad service — they usually just die out and their reps banned due to to many neg on their deals.

A wall of shame has other issues — whether OzBargain is liable for shaming them, which might have legal implications.

    • Like Scotty says, there are probably some legal ramifications to putting that info concrete on a page. Kinda like how OCAU Forums (or was that Whirlpool? Or both?) has a no "vendor verdicts" rule.

  • Can we please get some sort of visual confirmation when something has been saved in the bookmarks folder of your choosing? Right now I click 'Bookmark' and then tick the folder it belongs to and that's it. A simple tick after checking the save location would be useful I think to show it has indeed been saved. clippy

  • Hey scotty, does boolean operator work in the search engine? especially for saving searches?

…aww man, I tried it. Is it possible if you could implement this?

It'll make search alerts extremely effective.

  • I will be very useful if we can sort post based on price. Sometimes I am in the store and just want to check the price quickly to be sure that I am getting the best bargain.

  • Lazy suggestion: on the front page on the right hand side we see the newest deals. Can we get a + and - button under the number of votes. I often like to vote on deals without opening them and reading the detail and this would save me loading a new page. Yes, I know this really isn't important, but would be interesting to get others views on this anyway

    • All you got on the side bar is the title — don't vote just base on that. You can easily go to the new deals page and vote from that.

      • But but I'm lazy and don't want to go to the new deals page

  • Suggestion - Competition posts, under location, have 'Global' as an option. Helps to highlight your chances better I guess :)

    • Just to confirm, the purpose of having 'Global' as an option would be to let users know that they basically have a lot less chance of winning? Not so much to cater to people living outside of Australia.

What would we do with comps that are available to some but not all countries? eg 'Entry is available for residents of Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States & Canada only'. Would we just not set 'global/international' as an option when the comps aren't available to every country? There might be some difference in interpretation there when users are submitting the comps.

      Thanks

      • It could be to show you have less chances, also to show that it doesn't have the same guidelines as an Australian run competition. Also a good reflection that 99% of the time you'll be spammed.
I guess rather than 'Global', it could be 'international', also reflecting where the competition host site is based. Yet to see a comp run by an Aussie company that was open internationally.

Would we just not set 'global/international' as an option when the comps aren't available to every country?

Yeah, we could. It's not for international viewers of this site to necessarily enter, more for the 99% of users on here that are based in Aus to know.

        • Thanks for the suggestion, moocher should be implementing this 'Open to: International' as an option in the near future if all goes to plan.

        • @hamza23:

Cool :) someone's been busy huh!

  • Could you make BOOLEAN operators in the search engine? I'm getting a lot on unwanted emails from search alerts. It's annoying cause your expecting the deal you're after but instead you get flooded with unwanted emails.

    • All the keywords you put in are implicitly all required, i.e. AND operation. I do not think we'll implement an OR operation. If you want to exclude certain keywords, just put a minus sign in front of the word. For example search pizza -domino will find all posts with "pizza" but not "domino".

      • I tend to think OR would be good to implement (but I have no idea how difficult this is to do).

e.g. if you're after a deal on Bose QC35s, if you put in "QC35" you might miss out if the deal is titled "QuiteComfort 35". So you might end up just putting an alert for "Bose" leading to a lot of unwanted emails (again likely missing bargains as you'll start ignoring them.
If you could have an alert for "QC35 OR "Quitecomfort 35"" then you're much more likely to get all relevant deals.

Alternatively, does just having an alert for the 'official product name' automatically alert you, even if the deal title is "QC35"?

  • Please add the ability to be able to search on coupon codes. Thank you.

    • +1

Should be able to, as of the 22nd April it works when you search for text

Edit Scrub that, doesn't work :P EG searching for '550304' should find this post, but it doesn't

      • Thanks, Scotty has fixed that bug now (some coupons weren't showing in the search results due to some indexing issue).

  • Hi Mods,

If this has not already been brought up, can I please suggest we have an option to view all comments in 1 single page along with our current paged structure (more like the "Standard View" and "Archived View" of whirlpool forums.

A good example is the current 3 months free Foxtel deal which has 6 pages of comments. I wanted some particular information about the Foxtel Go App from that thread, but in order to do that, I have to search independently on each of the 6 pages. If we can have an option to view all comments within a single page, it would make finding information heaps better.

    Thanks.

If there is already a way to do it, please let me know.

    • It's already possible for a deal with more than 100 comments. At the top of the deal you will see:

      view edit revisions comments votes

Direct link using the 3 months Foxtel deal as an example.

      • Great. Thank you.

      • So many people are asking for this, makes one wonder if the current link placement is not quite ideal…?

        • +7

Yeah. We should probably put it next to the paginator so it goes like

          [ < | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | View All]

        • @scotty: Thanks Scotty. I can see this feature is already implemented now :)

        • @scotty:

          Looks good :)

  • After years of having to wade through garbage deals like this

    Can I suggest:
There should be a bigger warning message (for store reps/ or for all) before they post, on the following:

Having these (expensive) junk coming through the deal feed is just a chore for all. I can set certain user/stores to be hidden, but the 50 entries limit fills up quick.

    1. OzB users are only after the cheapest price available, don't bother posting if yours is nowhere near that, it won't end well.
    2. Is your product actually what the consumer at large wants to buy?
    3. Services like photography, removalists, and lemon products (e.g. self balance scooters, "weight loss" vibrating belt and boards , stupid cringeworthy trinkets should not be posted, just stop right there).
    4. "Faster shipping" "better service" "local seller" et al doesn't justify vastly increased price if the product is a junk in the first place.
    • There should be a bigger warning message (for store reps/ or for all) before they post, on the following:
OzB users are only after the cheapest price available, don't bother posting if yours is nowhere near that, it won't end well.

Our deal posting guidelines covers that and the sidebar states:

Only good bargains, please. Always check price comparison sites and all the fine print.

Perhaps something about only posting if this is the cheapest price? The purpose of the negative vote is to point out that it is cheaper elsewhere.

Services like photography, removalists, and lemon products (e.g. self balance scooters, "weight loss" vibrating belt and boards , stupid cringeworthy trinkets should not be posted, just stop right there).

Incomparable services/products are not permitted to be posted (guidelines) and will be removed. However, I think we need to be specific with what is allowable and make sure that we are dealing with it consistently . We wouldn't want to remove something that members find value in. If deals for a specific service or product are consistently not liked by the community then we will act. So please do hit the report link so that we can keep track.

Hamza wrote a thread reminding users of voting and one of his points touched on store reps. It might be handy to give a little guide, something like 10 tips to successful deals?

Also, you can change the voting threshold so you can actually block rep posts or change the minimum to a lower number. These options are available in My Account.

      • It might be handy to give a little guide, something like 10 tips to successful deals?

That's a good idea, and something a store rep would want to read before posting.
        Cheers

      • Hi Neil
Would you agree that training courses like this would fall under Difficult To Compare services

        • I think a blanket training course ban might be problematic as some do well. In your example, however, it is difficult to determine the value as it's not a standard course. The OP of that deal requested removal and we have removed that deal.

  • I've noticed the View All button on threads with multiple pages. This is a great idea but it doesn't do one really useful things. When you go to view all the page doesn't display which comments are new. It highlights comments from the OP but it doesn't highlight posts that I have made in the thread. I'd like to use the "View All" feature to find the new posts in multipage threads before the time limit runs out. Sometimes it takes more than the "New Posts" time limit to find all the new posts when I have to reaload the thread various times on multipl pages.
