Continued from Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2008-2016

Please make any suggestions for new features, bugs, things you'd like to see changed or anything else. Also feel free to start a new thread in Site Discussion. If it's a little issue perhaps use this thread, if it's a big issue then perhaps start a new thread. Please see the wiki below as your suggestion may already have been mentioned.

The majority of things you see as well as policies on OzBargain were implemented based on user feedback.

  • Question/Suggestion - Currently for competitions there is a button "Mark as entered". Can we have the same for deals ie. "Mark as Purchased" ?
This would be for personal use only as a way for me to track all my purchases via OZB. I've lost count of how many times I've received a package and totally forgot I ordered it!

This would serve as a different purpose to the upvote button since I use that sometimes to acknowledge a good deal with a product I have bought in the past or have experience with.

    • Currently you can add the deal into a "Bookmark". Call the bookmark folder "Purchased" or something like that.

      • Sweet that will work :)

  • Any plans to implement a function to see comments that we upvote. Like deals we upvote. Preferably private for the comment upvotes

  • In the Post Search Screen please allow to select multiple fields for Type/Categories (as you are using check boxes in the list, I think multi select should be allowed). Like in Categories, I would like to search in "Internet" and "Mobile" categories and create an email alert.

    • You can search deals within specific categories although not working for search alerts yet. For example if you want to search for a keyword "samsung" within both Internet and Mobile deal category, you can search samsung cat:internet, mobile.

Basically cat: takes a comma-separated-value of "stub name" for deal categories. For example for Books & Magazines deals it's "books-magazines".

HOWEVER it's not working for search alerts at the moment, as the search alert query parsing is actually coded differently from onsite search query. That should not be difficult to fix. The current drop down menu is just for convenience which I do not intend to develop further.

  • We really need a Wiki for long-term and long-running freebies, coz many don't actually disappear. Similar to the birthday deals Wiki. Somewhere that people can go to get the full list

      • Yeah but more of a list, or some sort of tick box on that page allowing it to just be freebies? :)

        • Yeah we can develop something to just produce a list of long running freebies. Since freebies have already been posted as deals here there's really no point to manually compose a wiki page just for the long running ones.

  • Not sure if this has been mentioned a million times before, but if not might be worth looking at an alternative.

When eBay have a discount code for selected retailers, is there really a need for everyone to post every single item individually from the retailers for the same offer code? IMHO it unnecessarily clogs up and wastes several pages IMO.

Eg: the current 'COLLECT' eBay deal

Surely 'eBay 20% on pickup for selected retailers (Good Guys, Tarocash, Bing Lee, Rays, BCF, Cinotta Chemist) as the deal title, then a link to the page where people can browse (http://www.ebay.com.au/rpp/collect?_trkparms=clkid%3D5436345…) is enough?

    • +1

Surely 'eBay 20% on pickup for selected retailers (Good Guys, Tarocash, Bing Lee, Rays, BCF, Cinotta Chemist) as the deal title, then a link to the page where people can browse (http://www.ebay.com.au/rpp/collect?_trkparms=clkid%3D5436345…) is enough?

There are thousands of items available, and not all of them are good deals. That's why I find it very helpful to be able to read a list of upvoted deals that are actually good.

    • +2

Now's your chance to find something worthwhile and make it your first post. 😁

    • Yep, is HAS been mentioned a million times before, and the way it is now is the way it will remain. As mentioned above, the individual deal posts are calling out specific items that are (exceptionally) cheap within the overall deal.

    • Side note, if you don't like the deals listed separately, why have you upvoted them?

      • Wow, few overly sensitive/defensive people here!

Just because I don't believe in the structure of the multi-deals doesn't mean the people that went to the effort don't deserve an up-vote.

Some reasonable logic in the responses and some not-so, just trying to help the site, no harm done :)

  • When you view messages using "view all" the options below the message disappear, not sure if this was intentional to save space or it needs to be corrected.

    • +1

The "View All" page does not support all the comment options. Basically the page is heavily cached (as it can take some toil to generate a single page with hundreds of commands).

      • Is that also why it doesn't remember which comments are new comments for the member reading the thread?

        • +3

Yes, because every individual have different "new" status against each comment. There's a solution though which I am hoping to implement that in the next week or two.

        • @scotty:

          Thank you for investigating.

  • I've been getting a very random issue that is completely harmless and resolves itself after a refresh.

Sometimes viewing my profile I'll get 2 warnings about being suspended from store rep and referral posts with no reason.

User is temporarily suspended from store representative posts.
    Reason:

    • +1

Happens when part of the system cannot finish store rep limit calculations quick enough to send back the result. Yes we are working on the performance issues in our backend queued jobs.

  • Im not able to see which comments are "new" anymore, anyone else?

  • I've suggested this before but can we please please please make unpublished threads due to insufficient stock still viewable? Leave it greyed out but still viewable and not commentable. It's still a deal even for the very few that can find a way to obtain it.

  • I noticed that the logo shown for Pebble Technology (the smart watch company) had the logo for pebble tec a pool company.

    • +1

Thanks updated. Problem of taking the 1st result from googling pebble technology logo :P

  • Unfortunately this site is becoming a joke when it comes to posting the same deals over and over and over again

    • Sorry, what do you mean?

      • The amount of deals that are posted and then reposted because they are not seen as a dupe is now out of control, there is no reason for anyone to do a list of deals anymore because most likely they will be reposted anyway

        • Maybe time to have "nested deals"?

        • Just for a bit of history for those following, the Duplicate Exception Thread.

The issue being that people were posting deals for say Woolworths' weekly specials which can have a huge amount of products listed. For example, this week's deal listing specials has 46 bargains listed on the deal. If someone saw one of the weeklys special either from that post, looking at their catalogue, in-store, etc. and posted a deal then it got flagged as a duplicate. Community feedback from that thread as well as the voting and comments from these individual posts, suggested that the community wanted to show both and thus the duplicate guidelines were expanded as follows:

          Duplicates

Don't post duplicates (deals that are already on the site). Please search OzBargain before posting.

          Exceptions:

The original deal is older than one month, and was expired or sold out between then and now.

The original deal is active but older than 6 months.

The duplicate gains an excessive amount of positive votes (50+) and reaches the front page.

The original deal is a list of multiple items and the item is not contained in the title of the original deal. Related forum discussion.

So if it isn't mentioned in the title then it won't be considered a duplicate.

Basically, if a long list of items are posted it's difficult to pick the bargains. Many users just scan through the deals via the front page, new deals etc and only the title and a couple lines of the description are shown.

Now I know TRENT86 and other posters spend time and effort in not only finding the deals but individually formatting the deals in the description and this is appreciated by the community. So in an effort to acknowledge posters like these, we ask users who post an individual deal to credit the OP (if that's where they saw it).

The bottom line is that we want people to be informed of the best deals and if that means repeating a great deal that was mentioned in a long list then it's probably worth it. We recently expanded the length of the title so posters should be able to fit more in.

          What's your thoughts TRENT?

        • @neil:

Basically, if a long list of items are posted it's difficult to pick the bargains.

I fully agree with this. There have been many instances where I see an individual deal appear in my inbox which I otherwise would have missed if it was only listed within a long list in a deal whose title didn't interest me.

Would automatically adding the second post's votes to the main deal listing be too messy?

        • @neil: I think i'm just not going to bother posting more than 2 deals at a time from now on

        • @neil: A couple of suggestions for long running deals.

          1. Remove voting on the deals, the deal has been posted before, the user re-posting is not putting any effort, rather they're just looking for a quick way to get more votes.

          2. Make it compulsory to put a link back to the original deal so the original poster gets credit.

          3. Restrict the number of re-posts a user can have.

    hi there.
I notice that there seems to be more and more deals for AliExpress stores popping up.
I have bought many items from AliExpress and as everyone probably knows there are good and bad stores there and even good stores can have poor items.
Are there rules to posting AliExpress deals,? I think there should be.
Some deals I see here, the store is only fairly new (this year), the item for sale has minimal sales and zero feedback.
Before we get flooded with so called bargains from AliExpress can some rules be put in place?
Store rating of 90% is pretty poor for Ali, I would never buy an item with zero feedback either.

    • +1

There is a hurdle for ebay sellers to clear, so it seems reasonable the same idea be in place for Aliexpress (and JD.com for that matter).

    • Yeah we implemented some guidelines back in July 2015 I believe for AliExpress deals, just in the backend:

Non-rep posts: 80% feedback + min number of 500 feedback.

Store rep posts: What is listed above + must be top rated seller.

We can also ban individual Ali Express stores if need be for counterfeit items, sockpuppeting etc. Each deal shows the individual Aliexpress store as a number, eg this one Aliexpress.com 1166416 which is their Aliexpress store number http://www.aliexpress.com/store/1166416

We've banned a couple of stores with dodgy stuff and removed a few AliExpress deals that didn't meet the guidelines over the past year.

We said 80% & 500 feedback as a starting figure, we can make that more strict if problems arise. I think those deals have been going pretty smoothly, I'm not aware of many issues at all.

Edit: We don't want to implement too strict a guideline, just a basic rule to weed out any obviously bad stores. Counterfeit items can be received from even stores with good feedback (same with eBay). I think from what I have read/seen that AliExpress are doing a pretty good job of ensuring users are protected and I assume also dealing with dodgy stores.

      • +1

so this would mean, for example, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/251789 shouldn't be posted?
as you can imagine, aliexpress can be a minefield and even great looking deals and stores can end up with shonky quality - i know from experience.
I am not bagging OPs and their great posts, just concerned about poor aliexpress items.

        • Yeah looks that one slipped through as it's below 500 feedback, I spoke to moocher who worked out what happened.

The deal was originally for a store which did meet the guidelines, however it was edited shortly after to a different deal/store which didn't meet the guidelines. The system didn't pick up the store change so the warning message didn't display as it usually would:

Deal cannot be posted for domain aliexpress.com (1999039) due to: AliExpress deals can only be posted if the there are more than 500 feedback and feedback score exceeds 80%.

You can see the store below the deal is still the original Aliexpress.com 804630 which the deal is for Aliexpress.com 1999039.

Sometimes AliExpress can be slow to fetch so that was probably the cause in this case that the edit didn't fetch the new store info in time, it is working now.

          Thanks for bringing it up.

  • Probably been said before…

99.9% of the time, I am searching for a deal that I saw recently (within the last week or two). I enter some keywords, but it defaults to search by "relevance"!!!

And nothing relevant comes up. Apart from 100's of expired deals.

So every time I have to change it to "sort by post date".

Please can you change this drop-down so that the default search is by "post date" - not relevance!!

    • +1

After you changed the sorting to by post date, click on the Save icon and from then on it would be by default.

      • ah….!!!

        cheers :)

  • I was having this chat with Wiki and…anyway, we were both wondering if there was a female mod or at least a female power user.

Edit: Gender shouldn't matter, and it doesn't, but at the same time, we both like the thought that the female ozbargainers, and there's quite a few of them, were represented in The Powers That Be. Hopefully they are.

P.s : There's no need to answer the question if it's too personal.

    • As nocure was probably trying to say -
      Girl Mods would still have…

By the time your Padawanette is an adult, science may have found a cure for Girls' Germs, but the current outlook remains bleak…

Internal EQ training workshop run by Mumma-Mod is more than sufficient.
Also reliably informed by my imagination that 'she' brings a virtual plate of fairy bread to Mod Meetings, so all good.

Stop trying to cause trouble, you two..
      :)

(Wiki, I will actually reply to your pm, but later on.)

      • Stop trying to cause trouble, you two

        We weren't. Just curious…

        • +1

          I know.
          Don't stress…

Mods a 'sausage fest', I believe, but I'm sure there'll be a girl at some point.

Padawanette no doubt a prodigy, so maybe she'll be the first.
Maybe Wiki herself, if she chucks in the job in Mauritius at some point and the falling coconuts haven't kill her before then…
          It's possible..
          :)

        • @Tas: Did you watch the Graham Norton show last night? Nicola Adams was one of the guests. She briefly talked about how women were banned from boxing for over 116 years because they were deemed too "unstable" during certain time of the month to be allowed inside a ring o_o It was only in 1996 that the ban on female participation in the sport was lifted.

Somehow, that brought about the discussion of whether there was a female member among TPTB on ozbargain or not. I believe there is. Wiki disagrees.

        • +1

@Jar Jar Binks: Graham Norton Show is good value, but didn't see that last night.

That link- I had forgotten how big the medals were at the last Olympics. She looks like she's wearing a crumpet around her neck!

Periods potentially performance-enhancing for some women who box. Maybe not in the context of Muhammad's rope-a-dope technique if mutual periods with one being Ali.
All too technical for a Sunday morning, Jar Jar Binks.

Scotty not online /down in Engineering, this morning.
I'm sure that he will clarify as to whether there is /has ever been, an 'Uhura' on the OzBargain Bridge.

        • +1

          @Tas:

As nocure was probably trying to say -
          Girl Mods would still have…

I had originally posted "yes, there is" but removed the comment because I didn't think it was appropriate.

        • +2

          @nocure:
Just a play, having a play, on your username.

You and Jar Jar were both right!

    • Yes, there is a female mod & developer (moocher). Moderators

As for a power user, I have no idea.

      • +1

        Cheers… and I was right! :)

  • Do you know how we have top comments, how about worst comments?

    • You can see the comments with the most negative votes in my stats posts. April. May stats should be out shortly.

  • I'm getting a NaN error every time I revoke a vote on a comment, usually as a result of my fat finger clicking on '+' instead of '-', or vice versa. Would that be a performance issue? Am I too fast for the backend to keep up with me? :)

    JJB aka The Flash

    • +1

That's a typical Javascript error. I'll have a look tomorrow.

      • This is what I meant btw. 20 minutes and several refreshes later, it is still showing as NaN votes. No biggie. Just thought I'll let you know. Also wondering if I'm the only one seeing the NaN thing.

        • What browser are you using on the mobile?

        • @scotty: chrome

  • The stats page appears to be not working. It includes deals like this one which only got 23 votes in the Historical Most Popular Deals.

    • +3

The "Historical Most Popular Deals" is a list of deals that "beat the next historically most popular deal". Yes so until 7 Oct 2007, that Free Official PIN was the most popular deal.

  • Not sure if this has been visited in the past, but is there a need to allow expired deals to remain on the front page?

    • +2

Otherwise how would people find out what they have missed out?

You can however change that in settings. Go to settings -> edit / deals and then make sure "Front Page / Do not show expired deals" is checked.

  • +1

Do forum posts auto-close commenting? Seen 2 threads just over the last few days get commented on, 1 was a year old the other is about 8 months old.

IMO forum posts should have the same shut-off times as deal posts, saves them getting dredged up

    • I noticed that too over the weekend. I think I got a notification from a thread which was a couple of years old and someone made a new comment on it.

I guess if people have new information they could add onto a forum thread, but it does get confusing sometimes for the current readers and even the person who posted the new comment.

I think a timeframe of two years would be suitable and then the thread gets automatically closed. If someone needs to update and older thread they could approach the moderators explaining the new useful info they have and then it could be reopened manually, similar to deal posts which get reopened when something changes.

      • -1

I think certain sections should have maybe 2-3 month cut-off, others should be 1 month.

    • Or an option to allow the OP to close the comments.

    • NM, was about deals, not forums.

  • When you click [View All] in the comment section, you can't Upvote/Downvote/Reply/(view)Votes/Report/Hide. Is this deliberated or a bug?

    • That was technical issue. The "View All" is generated & cached for all users, so voting options are removed as each individual would have voted differently. Therefore the voting buttons as well as other links (reply, hide, etc) are removed.

  • Possible to get other colours as the themes of the website other then white? I checked in my profile options but this doesn't seem to be available?
(Please delete this and inform me of how to do this if I am wrong).

    thanks.

    • Sorry it is not possible.

  • On mobile, when viewing my comments page, it's going outside the screen on the right, when it hasn't before. Something been changed?

    • The title of this entry is too long without a space to force a line break. So everything got pushed to the right…

      • Ah cheers, fixed it ;)

  • +2

On desktop, after clicking "Mark as read" in notification, notification window disappears but on mobile site it does not disappear and it needs force close by clicking "x" button. Is it possible to have auto closure once you hit "mark as read" on mobile site?

    • +1

Alright I'll fix that next week.

      • i guess this is not fixed yet.

        • +1

Upon inspection, clicking on "Mark as read" actually does not hide the notification window either on Desktop. However moving the mouse cursor outside the window does hide it, which is not available on mobile.

I have added some code to explicitly close the window on mobile, 1 second after receiving an acknowledgement from the server. It should be rolled out soon.

        • @scotty: Great Thanks Scotty.

  • Regarding highlighted deals, I think it's better to employ a HUKD/Pepper system to bring the deal to the first result of the front page, and have it go down and leave the front page normally. I think it's much better than just highlighting something for 1 hour only, and then have the users who weren't online that particular hour miss out on it.

    • Good suggestion.

Currently, for highlighted deals, mods nominate deals to sticky to the front page. We also take suggestions.

We have a set of criteria which basically includes the vote count, time between when posted and when the deal starts. We can then highlight the deal for any amount of time (usually a couple of hours). On our less popular sister site (ChoiceCheapies), it can be much longer (e.g. Pizza deals on Fridays).

I haven't seen how the HUKD highlighted system works. Does it look the same as a regular front page deal? Let us know next time it happens so we can take a look.

      • Can't remember for certain whether HUKD has that system, but check out dealabs.

When you scroll down to the 5th result youll see two Sennheiser headphones tagged as 'MAJ', which pretty much means it was highlighted. It's going down the front page normally like the other deals.

Click on one of those deals, and youll see text that when google translated, becomes this:

        Update on 07/05/2016 at 10:47 p.m.!
        Shift : down € 14.65

        • We've discussed highlighted deals and we won't be putting deals back into the front page queue. Many of the deals we highlight are for a limited period. For example, an event that is for 3 hours like the upcoming Deliveroo deal from 12PM-3PM. Some deals like the Pinchme ones are out of stock in a matter of minutes so we unhighligh very quickly. Some deals like the Big W Toy Sale which was removed by request of Big W and then republished was highlighted for a good part of the day.

So basically we'd like to have control on how long we highlight a deal depending on the situation. Deals that don't have a short time period of validity will be monitored based on activity so see if we need to keep it highlighted more or less.

  • Hey, I am wondering if we can have a reddit.com/r/ozbargainfeed somehow? I know you already very kindly give us rss feed but I think a reddit one too would be cool if its possible & easy. Thanks

    • Not sure I understand. So you want OzBargain replicated on Reddit using their own voting and commenting system?

      • Nope not at all.

What I suggest is a sub reddit where it posts the current deals. We might be able to lock it down or make it read only, but I wouldn't expect any voting or commenting in there.

Anyway I have come across this since posting this message: https://www.reddit.com/r/newreddits/comments/m8sni/introduci…

So I have requested it. If you guys aren't happy with me doing it I can make the sub reddit accessible only to me or give you ownership.

The reason I want to do this is because I am on reddit a lot and this also means we could use existing reddit apps to get widgets / notifications of deals.

        • So basically like a public RSS reader integrated into Reddit. As a Redditor myself, I can see the usefulness. I actually do it the other way around and use Feedly to read new OzBargain deals as well as new Reddit posts.

I think if it's a private sub, then it's fine. If it's public then it may cause issues. Will discuss and get back to you.

        • Yep on everything and thanks for getting back to me so fast.

I now realise that the redditrss thing I linked was posted ages ago and so far they haven't got back to me.

        • @neil: I sent a message to the guy who offered the rss -> reddit service. This is what he said:

I didn't end up expanding the system to be all things to all people as I had planned, so it is kind of hit or miss right now. I only check messages somewhat randomly and I currently will only create a new subreddit if it seems likely to gain more than just a couple of subscribers.

I asked him to ignore my request.

          Thanks

        • @daveaus:

          OK cool.

  • Again, can we maybe have an auto-close of forum posts after say 6 months? I can't imagine any need to have them open for commenting after that

    • Thanks. Will discuss and get back to you.

    • So after discussion, we won't auto close forum posts.

It's generally best practice for forums to stay open (e.g. Whirlpool) as forum posts should be continuous instead of creating new duplicate threads. Yes, this practice differs from deals but deals generally have an expiration whereas forum topics generally don't. Of course, feel free to report any spam comments or any threads that need to be looked at.

      • +1

Great, I think that's handy as it can be useful to add to an old discussion when a new development comes about, or ask a question in relation to the whole discussion for non-time-critical topics.

  • If negotiated deals can't be posted for banned stores, why don't they have the same posting limits as store rep deals…? Just seems like 1 doesn't equal the other. On the one hand you treat them like (effectively) a rep-posted deal, then on the other it just becomes free-reign.
